PB hotel design editorial

The Gansevoort opened in 2004 as the first luxury hotel in the Meatpacking District, a bet on a neighbourhood still transitioning out of its industrial past. Two decades and a $40 million renovation later, the property has shed its original party-hotel energy for something more considered. The 2021 redesign — led by owner Michael Achenbaum and creative director Olivier Weppe in collaboration with Gidich + Sepúlveda Architecture and Duncan + Miller Design — trades the original neon flourishes for warm wood, brass, and a porcelain lobby floor in a concrete tone that echoes the cobblestones outside. Art anchors the public spaces seriously: a Banksy "Flying Copper" original, a Richard Hambleton "Standing Shadow – Blue," and works by Mick Rock and Richard Avedon throughout. The 186 guest rooms draw their palette from the immediate geography — walls in a grey-blue ombré pulled from the Hudson, walnut headboards referencing the High Line's timber structure. The Poliform Duplex Penthouse operates at a different register: 1,700 square feet across two floors, with 20-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, slate floors, brushed concrete walls, and a fireplace running floor to ceiling — Poliform's first US hotel collaboration furnishing the space with the precision of a considered private residence. The rooftop pool, 45 feet and heated year-round, remains the hotel's social anchor and one of the few such amenities in Manhattan that functions meaningfully in winter.

"We stayed at the Gansevoort for one night during our stay in New York City. The room was overpriced for generic moderate accommodation. The location is good for walking to Greenwich Village, West Village and Highline. Staff was friendly and accommodating, the rooftop bar is fun if you like a hip trendy scene. If you’re looking for a modern hotel, this might be a good fit, otherwise New York City offers many more high-end the hotels that feel more luxurious."

"The meatpacking district is quieter and less crowded than we expected so this was great hotel if you want to be near the Whitney Museum, High Line, and lots of restaurants. Don't miss the rooftop bar."

"Nice hotel with really excellent location. Very expensive hotel so one would expect at least a coffee machine and courtesy water in the rooms. None of that. The neighborhood is great for foodies and upscale shoppers but no convenience stores really close by. In many respects I honestly expected more and better. The noise level at the hotel is high. Heater, toilet flush, honking of cars in the street etc u are surrounded by noise even in higher floors.Room decor is ok but could be updated. In spite of what they advertise the pool is out of service, major disappointment because we really picked the hotel to enjoy the rooftop. Room service is great though and the food really yummy"

"Had an absolute incredible experience here! The staff was friendly and very on top of it, even offering umbrella service and always opening the door as we enter and exit. The location is perfect and we enjoyed both the lobby lounge and also the rooftop bar and scenic views. 10/10. Also, the room was spacious, soft sheets, and nice bathroom. The gym is modern and fancy sauna."

"Front Desk team of GRACE and Erika were the DREAM TEAM! FUNNY, helpful, professional and kind. Ross, all around everywhere guy..bellman, doorman and smile maker made every come/go happy. Rooms were clean and nice. Room service didn't start until 7AM which is TOUGH for morning coffee needs. Location great. We had a few issues but the above mentioned DREAM TEAM did everything in their control to make us HAPPY! THANK YOU and we will visit again!"
