PB hotel design editorial

The Gansevoort opened in 2004 as the first luxury hotel in the Meatpacking District, a bet on a neighbourhood still transitioning out of its industrial past. Two decades and a $40 million renovation later, the property has shed its original party-hotel energy for something more considered. The 2021 redesign — led by owner Michael Achenbaum and creative director Olivier Weppe in collaboration with Gidich + Sepúlveda Architecture and Duncan + Miller Design — trades the original neon flourishes for warm wood, brass, and a porcelain lobby floor in a concrete tone that echoes the cobblestones outside. Art anchors the public spaces seriously: a Banksy "Flying Copper" original, a Richard Hambleton "Standing Shadow – Blue," and works by Mick Rock and Richard Avedon throughout. The 186 guest rooms draw their palette from the immediate geography — walls in a grey-blue ombré pulled from the Hudson, walnut headboards referencing the High Line's timber structure. The Poliform Duplex Penthouse operates at a different register: 1,700 square feet across two floors, with 20-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, slate floors, brushed concrete walls, and a fireplace running floor to ceiling — Poliform's first US hotel collaboration furnishing the space with the precision of a considered private residence. The rooftop pool, 45 feet and heated year-round, remains the hotel's social anchor and one of the few such amenities in Manhattan that functions meaningfully in winter.

"Front Desk team of GRACE and Erika were the DREAM TEAM! FUNNY, helpful, professional and kind. Ross, all around everywhere guy..bellman, doorman and smile maker made every come/go happy. Rooms were clean and nice. Room service didn't start until 7AM which is TOUGH for morning coffee needs. Location great. We had a few issues but the above mentioned DREAM TEAM did everything in their control to make us HAPPY! THANK YOU and we will visit again!"

"Having considered similarly priced hotels in the Theatre district, we were so pleased to have chosen the Gansevoort, not just for the less crowded environment in which it is located but also for the generally open and friendly atmosphere and the staff who took the trouble to remember our names and were ever helpful. The rooms were spacious and well equipped. Perhaps the feature that took some getting used to were the sliding doors, not only to the wardrobe but also to the bathroom. We soon got used to it but forgot to explain to guests who visited us. On the top floor ( with an outdoor pool) is a great bar which clearly attracts a lot of people after work. We had a very pleasant supper there, entertained by an extensive firework display in Jersey City. Otherwise we took breakfast out of the hotel (as I need gluten free food). There are many bars and restaurants within a short walk. If we were to be back in NYC we would definitely stay here again."

"I understand the Gansevoort has been around for a while and is hardly a new kid on the block. The rooms feel dated, and the staff come across as aloof and extremely unhelpful. However, the gym, sauna, and location are the hotel’s only redeeming qualities. I’ve stayed here before, but it had been a while, and this visit left me very disappointed by the lack of professionalism from the staff."

"I booked a room at $600 a night and when I checked in, there was another patron who was struggling atthe front desk to find a way to lower the temperature in his room. It was suggested to him that he opened the window. I got to my room and the temperature was 74° and I tried to adjust the thermostat to cool the room as I might expect I would be able to do in a high-end hotel. The thermostat was non-responsive and when I called the front desk, they offered me a fan and suggested I open a window. They also noted that when there were warm days, such as this that their systems weren’t capable of being responsive to these kinds of changes and suggested that given today was warm, but the remainder of the week was going to be cold again that they were not going to adjust their systems to be responsive to clients who were not able to address the heat in their room. At a hotel, such as this, I would expect that the engineering teams would be on call and ready to adjust up and down and facilitate the comfort of the guest staying in the hotel."

"FALSE advertisement. The website lists one price with a third night free so I booked it. This is the email I received from the the hotel: “ Hi, as per your request, please be advised when looking for rooms on the hotel website the $460.00 rate you see first is just an estimated rate and not the actual rates you will pay for the room. Please be advised you reservation will remain as confirmed” Since when do hotels give an estimate and not the real rate? I was told via telephone that is just to “draw people in”. Do yourself a favor folks and book elsewhere. This is bait and switch at its finest and the person on the phone “doesn’t know what to do about it”. Run away from this place. I should have known when they wrote “as per.”"
