Ian Schrager's long argument with luxury — that great design should not be the exclusive territory of expense accounts — found its most direct expression when PUBLIC Hotel opened on the Lower East Side in 2017. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the 367-room, 26-storey tower rises from Chrystie Street in board-formed concrete, its facade carrying the raw texture visible in the images through to the exposed ceilings inside every room. The exterior streetscape is dense with uplit hornbeam trees and clipped hedging that form a green wall along the pavement, giving the entrance a quality closer to a Manhattan garden than a hotel drop-off. Inside, the interiors split between two registers. Standard rooms are spare and warm — light ash wood cladding wraps walls and ceilings in a continuous timber shell, broken by the bare concrete soffit above and a marble-topped Saarinen-style side table below. Suites push toward something more atmospheric: amber candlelight, dark walnut headboard panels, a gilded baroque mirror set against stripped plaster. The rooftop bar frames the Empire State Building through a latticed bamboo canopy threaded with ivy, while the ground-floor bar beneath a suspended garden of hanging ferns — its backlit shelves stacked with vibrantly coloured infusion bottles — carries the theatrical instinct Schrager has applied to public spaces since his Studio 54 days, now channelled through the material rigour of one of architecture's most disciplined practices.

"One of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had. If you are looking to sleep at all during your stay, this is not the hotel for you. They operate multiple nightclubs and the music is blasting until 3 am. In addition, the lines to get into the clubs form in the street, where you hear conversations and yelling until 2-3am. A few hours after the clubs stop and the drunk patrons get into their Ubers, the basketball courts start up across the street with yelling there. They should definitely provide earplugs in each room. And when we inquired about getting some at the front desk they were all out. It’s shocking how a hotel could find it acceptable to create and subject its patrons to so much noise."

"Our stay was fantastic, thanks to the incredible staff and the hotel’s perfect central location, which made sightseeing around New York City so easy. Rafael gave us a warm welcome, even taking photos of us on the iconic star escalator and making us feel right at home. Samantha DS served amazing cocktails and greeted us with a warm smile every time we saw her, while Kacie provided excellent local recommendations that helped us make the most of our visit. Everyone we encountered was genuinely friendly, welcoming, and eager to help. My niece and I had a wonderful trip and created lasting memories—we can’t wait to come back!"

"I came by the Public Rooftop yesterday and was stunned by the views and service. We had to do a f&b minimum which was no problem. The host with the long curly hair (Solans?) and the manager Jaime were so attentive and friendly. Not to mention super good looking! My girlfriend and I got two cocktails each and shared some bites—- loved the shrimp skewers and fries. Would 100% recommend The Roof and can’t wait to visit again. Thank you again for the killer hospitality!"

"Public is The one place to Stay & Sleep in NY now. It is a highly standards hospitality service in a very modern design case. The teams at Public are always precise and welcoming. The style of the Hotel is Modern, chic and fashion. This is not a typical "tourist venue" but if you like style it is the one to choose."
