PB hotel design editorial

Crowned by a patinated copper dome visible from well into Central Park, the thirty-five-floor Art Deco tower at 35 East 76th Street has anchored the Upper East Side skyline since Bien & Prince completed it in 1930. The Carlyle, as it became, carried a residential grandeur from the outset — its stepped limestone massing and intricate terracotta ornamental banding placing it closer to a grand Manhattan apartment building than a conventional hotel. Successive waves of renovation have preserved that register: the 190 rooms and suites carry walls painted in deep olive and warm taupe, upholstered headboards in pale linen set against chocolate-stained walnut millwork, and Greek key-patterned carpets in navy that ground the whole composition in a quietly patrician vocabulary. The public spaces hold the building's real character. Bemelmans Bar, named for Ludwig Bemelmans who painted its wraparound Central Park murals in 1947 in exchange for a year's lodging, survives with its gold-leaf ceiling and lacquered tabletops intact — one of the few mid-century hotel interiors in New York that has never been overtaken by renovation instinct. The restaurant, visible in the images with its densely hung salon-style picture walls, Baccarat-style crystal chandelier, and cognac leather banquettes, moves in a different register — more European grand café than Manhattan power room. Together the two spaces demonstrate what The Carlyle has always understood: that atmosphere accumulated over decades is harder to design than anything conceived from scratch.

"We went as a couple for a treat. It feels like a step back in time. The room was very spacious for New York and the service was very gracious. We had several meals there, one of the best breakfasts we have had. We made a trip to the famed Bemelman's bar and the murals were worth the visit. Elevators are slow and dated which just took a bit of edge off the feel but if you want to experience a sort of byone New York in the heart of luxurious shopping this is the place to go."

"I came here for two nights with my daughter and stayed in a room on the 12th floor with two twin beds. The room would not warm up due to the cold temperatures outside. The staff was very responsive and sent up a very kind technician immediately to make sure the heat was working correctly. They told us that due to the building being so old, there wasn't more they could do besides provide space heaters, which helped somewhat. Two and a half weeks after our visit I noticed red bumps on my body and experienced unbearable itching, particularly around my feet at night. After seeing my PCP and a dermatologist, I was eventually diagnosed and treated for scabies. My young daughter thankfully did not get it since we had two separate beds in our room, thank goodness. I had not traveled or stayed anywhere after my trip to New York and nobody else in my family has had any bites or symptoms. I called the hotel to inform them of what had happened. I did not ask for a refund, nor do I want one. I simply asked for a copy of the report showing me that they inspected the bed properly so this hell would not be experienced by future guests. They refused to send me any reports or any documentation at all proving they remedied the situation in the room. They simply stated via email "an outside company tested the room 1212 on Saturday and the results were negative for all biting bugs.""

"I have stayed multiple times at the Carlyle for pleasure, but this stay was different as I needed to be near the hospital where my husband was having surgery. The entire staff was kind, patient, and extraordinarily accommodating. Every morning at breakfast they would even make a special bag of the daily papers and pastries to bring to him at the hospital without my even asking. This is just a small example of how the staff goes above and beyond for their guests. I can’t wait to return with my husband for a long weekend."
