PB hotel design editorial

Rising 46 floors above the corner of Spring and Varick Streets, the glass curtain wall tower that houses The Dominick presented its architects — Costas Kondylis and Partners — with an interesting challenge when it opened in 2012: how to make a contemporary skyscraper feel at home in SoHo, a neighborhood whose character is defined almost entirely by cast-iron loft buildings that top out at six stories. The answer, visible in the images, was to anchor the tower behind a low-rise podium clad in warm zinc panels and floor-to-ceiling glass, creating a street-level mass that defers to the surrounding masonry before the blue-glazed shaft climbs sharply above it. From the upper floors, corner windows frame the Manhattan skyline northward toward the Empire State Building and westward across the Hudson to New Jersey, the city spread below in a way that makes the building's height feel like a deliberate gift rather than an imposition. Inside, the interiors carry the atmosphere of a well-tailored New York apartment rather than a conventional hotel. The double-height lobby — visible overhead in one image — layers bronze-patinated columns, warm walnut-tone vertical fins, and travertine floors under pendant lighting, the seating arranged in loose residential groupings of chocolate leather club chairs and low-slung sofas on silk-blend rugs. Guestrooms continue the restrained palette: deep espresso leather headboards spanning the full wall width, sand-toned carpet, and sheer linen curtains that dissolve into the view. The rooftop pool terrace, framed against SoHo's landmarked Art Deco warehouse facades, gives the property its most distinctive outdoor moment.

"I would not recommend the Dominick Hotel for several reasons. The elevators are horrible. You can sometimes wait 10 to 15 minutes for an elevator to arrive on your room floor. At one point, we had to take the service elevator to get to the lobby to meet our Uber. The pool is small and the pool deck overcrowded. You have to get there early to get a lounge chair and there were only 2 umbrellas. The bed was too soft. The housekeepers were friendly and helpful."

"Everything about the experience from start to finish was wonderful. The views were breathtaking, service was 10/10. The only negative feedback I have was my car was a bit mishandled by the valet. We felt a bit rushed to get inside when we arrived and upon leaving, the valet driver hit the curb with my vehicle and added a bit of curb rash to my rim."

"I booked this hotel for my mom and her friend to spend the night in as part of her 80th birthday celebrations, and I could not be more pleased. My mom has extremely limited mobility, and the hotel accommodated her beautifully, not only with the room they gave her but also in how she was treated and assisted by staff. My mother raved about how helpful everyone was - from the valets, to the check-in people, to the restaurant staff, to the pool staff. She felt like a queen, and it made my heart happy to see her treated so well. The hotel even left balloons and cupcakes in her room I didn’t order since they wanted to help her ring in her milestone birthday. I also had a fantastic experience working with the reservations department to set up her visit. My mother said the hotel was beautiful and perfectly located with fantastic dining options. I really can’t sing the praises of this place enough!"

"The bathtub in our room is full of damages and the light control panel is also not working, I need to switch off all the lights one by one. We already booked thru American Express's fine hotel, as part of the benefit, we could have a free upgrade of our room if there’s available, but the reception told us that as we have already booked the highest level of their suite, so they don’t have a chance to upgrade us, but at last they gave us an accessible room, as in their hotel’s website, they have an option to book an accessible room, that make us feel very uncomfortable. And when we call and ask the hotel, our phone call was picked up by 8 different persons but still didn’t fix our problem, so at last we have to call back to Hong Kong American express. And when we went down to talk to the reception, he told my wife he already gave us the best one they couldn’t offer, they didn’t apology for giving us an accessible room. This is the worst 5 star hotel I have ever stayed."

"This is a great hotel with stellar service, luxury rooms, and beautiful views of the Hudson River and New York City skyline (through floor to ceiling windows in the room). The room was very comfortable - large, with great bedding, and very clean. Mohendra Halall at the front desk and all the staff were wonderful throughout out stay. We will definitely come back to this hotel!"
