PB hotel design editorial

Few addresses in New York carry the architectural authority of a McKim, Mead & White commission, and the landmarked 1907 Beaux-Arts mansion at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 28th Street announces itself accordingly — rusticated limestone, a grand arched entrance, and the kind of civic gravitas that once belonged exclusively to banks and government buildings. The Fifth Avenue Hotel, which arrived in 2023, is set within this original structure alongside a new 24-story glass tower by Perkins Eastman and PBDW Architects, the two buildings together producing 153 rooms and suites in the heart of NoMad. Where the exterior maintains its composed, classical bearing, Martin Brudnizki's interiors do something altogether more theatrical. The MBDS approach here draws deep on Gilded Age excess and global eclecticism — rooms arrive in saturated veridian greens and amber golds, furnished with rattan folding screens, antique Persian rugs, and star-shaped ceiling fixtures that catch the light like something between a 1970s Italian palazzo and a Wes Anderson fever dream. A restaurant dominated by full-grown ficus trees and tiered brass chandeliers projects a different kind of grandeur, one that is living and slightly unruly. The bar, clad in dark walnut paneling with crimson velvet sofas gathered around a marble fireplace, settles into something more conspiratorial. Threading through all of it are more than 700 works of art, antique and contemporary, which give the hotel the density and feeling of a private collection rather than a curated backdrop.

The Fifth Avenue Hotel Reviews

"This was by far the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at and I travel often. The service is 2nd to none including Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton. Everything from butler greeting you upon arrival with fresh juice and cookies, to fresh flowers in the room, daily treats, gorgeous accommodations, and excellent staff. The location was close to everywhere I needed to go including company events, shopping and dining. The service and the beauty of the room is what sets this hotel apart from the others."

"Had a wonderful stay with family. The front desk staff were very welcoming throughout our stay, greeting us by name each time we went by, always checking to see if we needed anything. The hotel is very elegantly designed but really it's the level of service that makes this hotel stand down from others we've stayed at in NYC. They truly make you feel like you're on vacation and have a peaceful, beautiful respite when coming in from the hustle of the city. Tips - make Portrait Bar reservations as it's a hot spot that opens to the public after 6 pm and make use of the in-room martini service by the butlers! Look forward to staying here again."

"From the beginning, being welcomed at the door of my room by a butler with a fresh juice and pastries set a tone of warmth and elegance. The service is exceptional: attentive and refined, without ever feeling intrusive. The rooms are divine, beautifully decorated in an exquisite maximalist style, with beds so comfortable they invite real rest. Their outstanding restaurant and bar are well worth visiting on their own, and the location is fantastic for exploring New York City. Truly memorable."

"normally never leave reviews, but this stay really stood out. The Fifth Avenue Hotel ended up being the nicest hotel I’ve ever stayed in, and that’s saying a lot. I’ve stayed at The Plaza before, and this somehow felt even more luxurious. From the start, the service was noticeably different. Nothing felt scripted or forced. Every person we interacted with was genuinely friendly and attentive, and it never felt like they were just doing their job out of obligation. It felt natural. One thing that really impressed me was how detail-oriented everything was. Housekeeping went above and beyond in ways I wasn’t expecting—organizing our bathroom and bedroom items and even leaving cleaning cloths next to our sunglasses. Little things, but they made the room feel thoughtfully cared for instead of just cleaned. What really sold me on this hotel, though, was the staff. My aunt accidentally left her phone at a nearby theater, and instead of just telling us where to go or what to do, someone from the hotel actually went to the theater and brought it back. That kind of effort is rare anywhere, especially at a hotel in New York. The Portrait Bar was fantastic—great atmosphere and really good cocktails. Café Carmellini ended up being our favorite restaurant of the trip. The food was excellent, and the drinks were just as good. Overall, everything about the stay felt intentional and genuinely high-end without being stuffy. The Fifth Avenue Hotel sets a new standard for hospitality in NYC. I would absolutely stay here again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it."

"At first glance walking into this beautiful hotel, you are transported into a haven of glamour; an eden of opulence and tranquility. Everything from the unique art pieces to the fragrant aroma, I knew our stay here was going to be the most memorable past of our visit to New York City. Check-in: Friendly and warm front office staff. Quick check-in service with anecdotal conversation. Escorted us to our room with a brief explanation of where everything was located. Answered all the questions we had about the hotel services, the hotel art style and the features of the room. Afterwards, the Butler welcomed us and was then available promptly throughout our entire stay. The Room: Gorgeous room. Extremely well decorated and considerate. Quirky style with a hint of mother of pearl. The most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on. Thoughtful amenities. Restaurant (Café Carmellini): The extraordinary menu and the aesthetic of the restaurant matches perfectly with the elegance of this hotel. We were celebrating our anniversary and the staff made sure to make this day more special than it already was. Even the end of the meal with the cute chocolate “monster” bowl will be memorable. Bar (Portrait Bar): A huge oversight on our part and truly a miss opportunity for us was not going to the Portrait Bar for a drink. We made the mistake of not booking a table in advance thinking the travel season was low this time of year, but wow was this place thriving and packed. We simply weren’t able to get a seat. I suppose that’s our excuse to come visit another time. Next time, I’ll make sure reserve a spot in advance."
