PB hotel design editorial

Dropping into Williamsburg's Noord Seventh Street corridor in 2018, on a stretch where the East River industrial waterfront gives way to the neighborhood's denser residential grain, The Hoxton Williamsburg announced itself as a ten-storey new-build rather than the adaptive reuse that had defined the brand's earlier European properties. Hollwich Kushner — the New York practice known for buildings that negotiate between civic gesture and commercial program — designed the exterior: a dark metal-panel curtain wall cantilevered over a textured brick podium, the roofline articulated by retractable canvas awnings that are visible from street level and signal the rooftop bar above. The 175-room tower holds its own against the bridge view without grandstanding. Ennismore's in-house team handled the interiors, threading a palette of forest-green velvet headboards, brass sputnik pendants, dark walnut millwork, and graphic-print bedding through rooms that feel closer to a well-edited Brooklyn apartment than a branded hotel room. The open-grid clothing rack in blonde wood, the cast-bronze side table, and the low tulip-base bistro chairs at the window repeat across room categories with enough variation to avoid monotony. Downstairs, a glasshouse restaurant wrapped in mature ficus and living walls gives the ground-floor dining room a conservatory atmosphere, while the rooftop bar — yellow zellige tile behind the counter, cane bistro chairs facing the Williamsburg Bridge — delivers the panoramic payoff the building's height promises.

"My wife and I stayed at The Hoxton and had a wonderful time. Eric M was truly amazing and helped us with everything we needed. The room was clean, the food was great, and the service was outstanding. We would absolutely stay here again!"

"Two of our adult children, my wife, and I stayed here two nights on Valentine's Day weekend. Here are my quick observations: 1. The rooms are very small. That fact is inescapable, but the rooms are well-appointed. They have a coffee maker, small fridge, nice blue tooth speaker, small clothes rack, the obligatory TV, and two ample drawers under the bed. The shower is quite confusing, but it worked well once we understood the two handles. 2. The staff is very nice and accommodating. I wish to particularly compliment Brett who called us when the rooms were ready, checked us in, and answered all of our questions. 3. The lobby/bar is very attractive and ever so cozy. It is a nice place to relax or have a coffee and pastry. It is also great for an afternoon or late-night drink."

"We are 1 day in for Valentine’s Day weekend and regret staying here. Let’s start with the good. Williamsburg is what Sesame Street would be like for grown ups. It’s a great location, easy public transport, walkable, safe creative area that can fit all kinds of interests. But there are a bunch of hotels in this area like the Whythe who will give you the same access and deliver on their promises. Hoxton’s $400+/night rate includes daily cleaning of the room. Guess what? No one has even so much as dropped off clean towels. So even though the room looked clean and tidy when we checked in, if they don’t care about cleaning when guests are here, what does that suggest about cleaning in between guests when no one is around to check in? And good luck trying to reach reception by phone in the evening. Busy signal for over 40 minutes both by cell and the useless hotel phone. All we wanted were towels! It would have been easier to take the 5-10 minute walk to CVS twice and buy it ourselves. What was so unpleasantly surprising about all this is that the staff are all super responsive, knowledgeable and kind when they are around. We did late check in and lady who checked us in was very responsive and diligent. She also gave great advice about parking which was a lifesaver post snow storm. We also asked for an iron from one of the male receptionists in the morning and got it fast. So it’s a management problem clearly they don’t have enough people who can deliver on their over promises, because the people who are here try very hard. Be warned so that you’re not the one left holding the bill."

"Exceptionally gracious front desk staff (thank you Lily and team!), very nice room with an amazing view, thoughtful modern furnishings with a particularly comfy mattress, and great lobby amenities (restaurant, lounge, coffee bar) to start and end our day. Great value and amazing location for Williamsburg."
