PB hotel design editorial

Rising fifty-two floors above Fifth Avenue at 400 Fifth, the tower designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill gives The Langham New York 5th Avenue one of Midtown's more quietly distinctive silhouettes — its faceted glass curtain wall catching and fracturing light in a diamond-patterned rhythm that distinguishes it from the flat-faced corporate slabs surrounding it, with the Empire State Building visible in the mid-distance from nearly every west-facing room. The hotel's 214 rooms were conceived to give the property a residential rather than transactional atmosphere, and the images bear that out: pale-toned armchairs with mid-century proportions, walnut-finished millwork running the length of suites, and large-format canvases including bold floral paintings that push against the otherwise neutral palette. The food and beverage spaces shift register entirely — Ai Fiori, the fine-dining restaurant designed with warm cherry-wood floors, dark stone columns, and linen-draped round tables, established serious culinary ambitions when Michael White opened it here in 2010. The bar carries a darker sensibility: Calacatta marble counter, mirrored ceiling panels, dark wenge-toned wall cladding, and oversized peony photographs that lend the room a moodier, more nocturnal quality. Across all the spaces, the hotel navigates the particular challenge of inserting a refined, European-inflected hospitality brand into a purpose-built American commercial tower — and largely succeeds by keeping the interiors calm enough to let the city views do the talking.

"Exceptional birthday stay! We had a wonderful stay celebrating my daughter’s birthday on March 7th. The entire staff was incredibly warm and welcoming, and our room was both spacious and spotless. They went above and beyond by decorating the room with balloons and arranging special amenities for my daughter’s birthday, making it a truly special day for her. Special thanks to Club Manager Cathy for extending our stay with a late check-out, and to the entire club and in room dining team for making our time there so memorable. Also thanks to the house keeping team for the wonderful turndown service. We can't wait to return to the Langham New York the next time we're in NYC."

"An absolutely wonderful stay at the Langham. Spent 3 nights there during a business trip. The hotel was so lovely I didn’t want to leave. Staff was super helpful, welcoming and professional. Made me feel welcomed from check in to checkout. Everyone at the club lounge was incredibly friendly, professional and just superior service all the time. Loved everything about the hotel. Great location and amazing views of Empire State Building. Perfect hotel for business or leisure travel. Will definitely return!"

"I recently stayed at The Langham Fifth Avenue for business and thought the hotel was excellent. Huge room (so unusual for New York!) with every amenity located in the right place. Very luxurious with Frette bathrobes and Diptyque products. Highly recommend"

"My first visit to the Langham Fifth Ave for my quarterly business trip. I had stayed at the Langham in Boston and was looking forward to a luxurious overnight stay. I was greeted warmly and was checked in efficiently. I was even upgraded to a junior suite. I was overjoyed with the suite. It was huge with two sofas, a work station, the biggest TV I’ve ever seen and a bathtub you could swim in. I was tired so I ordered a delicious chicken dinner from room service and took a nice hot bad in that awesome soaking tub. However positive first impressions gave way to disappointment at bedtime. The expensive mattress and topper felt like I was sleeping on a camping cart or a pull out sofa. It was as hard as a rock, not comfortable at all and I had the worst night sleep I’ve had since I stayed at a hostel in 1988. This is a luxury hotel! Why can’t it have comfortable, soft beds you sink into? Or at least beds that don’t feel like you’re sleeping on the floor. When I checked out with my aching neck and sore back, the attendant was very sympathetic and offered to make a note in my profile to do something to make my next stay more comfortable. I’ll have to think about whether there will be a next stay. You can have the most specious room with a beautiful bathroom, but if the bed is not comfortable it’s not going to pass my inspection."
