PB hotel design editorial

Jacques Grange's 2009 reinvention of a 1927 Upper East Side landmark gave The Mark Hotel something few Manhattan properties can claim: a French decorator's sensibility applied to a building that already carried the bones of European classicism. The sixteen-floor brick tower on Madison Avenue and 77th Street, half a block from the Metropolitan Museum, had been a distinguished address since its neo-Italian Renaissance facade first rose above the neighborhood, and Grange — whose residential clients have included Yves Saint Laurent and Princess Caroline of Monaco — treated the renovation less as a hotel commission than as the assembly of an exceptionally large private apartment. The rooms bear this out. Tray ceilings with deep plaster moldings frame beds upholstered in channeled gray fabric, flanked by gourd-shaped brass lamps on cerused-oak nightstands and dressed in chartreuse silk drapes that pull the eye toward Madison Avenue's light. The palette across the 150 rooms and suites runs to warm stone, pewter, and acid yellow — a combination that feels Parisian without being imitative. The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges Vongerichten anchors the ground floor in two distinct registers: a bar room dressed in striped wool armchairs and warm terracotta tones, and a more formal dining room where walnut coffered ceilings, teal velvet banquettes, and abstract mid-century canvases mounted between polished brass grilles give the space the amber gravity of a classic French brasserie transported to the Fifth Avenue museum corridor.

"I always enjoy staying at The Mark. The service is genuinely excellent — warm, attentive, and very New York in the best way. The team makes you feel looked after from the moment you arrive. The location is unbeatable and the overall atmosphere still feels chic and classic. That said, my room could use a bit of an update — it was comfortable, but some details are starting to feel dated. Still, because of the people and the energy of the place, I’d happily return."

"This hotel never lets you down …from the moment you check in there is a level of personalized service that in my opinion is unparalleled. I travel quite a bit and this hotel has managed to keep the important aspects of a fine hotel at the forefront. The cleanliness of the room, the soft linen and huge bath towels -the abundance of water bottles in the room -all the creature comforts are accounted for . Each time you enter you are greeted by your name ,my adult daughter was coming /going and they even realized she was mine ,in an impersonal city like New York I find that reassuring and comforting. I’ve stayed here many many times and I will be back …."

"i had such high expectations, seen all the pix from the Met Gala guests, etc. well, for average folks, eh, it wasn't so special. i had emailed in advance, the most minor of requests-a newspaper in the room, a tempurpedic pillow, bottled water-never happened, i followed up THREE times when i arrived, nada...the room itself was interesting, a courtyard junior suite, 2 full bathrooms which was great, as i had a guest sleeping on the pull out couch. another mini drama getting that pulled out each nite. it all seemed too much work for a luxury hotel. the front desk staff was lovely & empathetic. our room rate included breakfast(another issue, that was denied at checkin but i had the actual reservation on my phone). breakfast was exceptional, albeit expensive. we also had dinner there on fri nite. fantastic, excellent service."

"The hotel is not only classy, but cool as well. The hotel is not only classy, but cool as well. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable and beautiful decor. A generous closet and the nicest amenities. Service overall is excellent, the staff is super friendly without being overwhelming. Feels like an elegant home at the Upper east side. Loft the experience with delicious culinary options, Jean George breakfast in bed, Caviar Kaspia for lunch and the fun pop up for shellfish and a glass of rosé. I’ll be coming back as soon as I can!!"
