PB hotel design editorial

At 700 Fifth Avenue, where 55th Street intersects one of Manhattan's most surveilled blocks of pavement, a Beaux-Arts limestone tower completed in 1905 to designs by Harde & Short has held its ground against a century of Midtown reinvention with uncommon composure. The building's facade, visible in the images, remains one of the most ornate on Fifth Avenue — heavily rusticated base, paired Corinthian columns flanking the entrance, and a cartouche of sculpted figures above the porte-cochère that carries genuine sculptural ambition rather than mere decorative obligation. The Peninsula New York, which has inhabited the building since 1988 following an earlier life as the Gotham Hotel, spread 239 rooms and suites across its upper floors, with the Hong Kong-headquartered group bringing its characteristic standard of finish to a structure that needed no architectural apology. Inside, the guest rooms shown here settle into a palette of warm champagne and ivory, with dark mahogany case pieces, patterned wool carpet in a tonal scroll motif, and gilt-framed floor mirrors lending the spaces the considered weight of a well-appointed Manhattan apartment rather than anonymous hotel accommodation. The rooftop bar, photographed against the Midtown skyline at dusk, deploys iron cross-back chairs, wicker lounge groupings, and planted urns of lavender against a panorama of illuminated glass towers — the city providing a backdrop that no interior designer could commission. The restaurant space, with its amber-lit textured wall panels framed in steel and a gallery-dense arrangement of antique mirrors, arrives as the sharpest contemporary intervention in an otherwise classically anchored building.

"The Peninsula was the best experience I have ever had. The room was spacious and perfectly appointed and the location can’t be beat. But what made it so special was the unbelievable service. Stephanie Colovic and team my son’s first trip to NYC unforgettable. We will never stay anywhere else in New York."

"The WiFi in this hotel SUCKS. If you’re coming on business and need dependable wifi. This is NOT the place to stay."

"The hotel was well located - it was convenient to local sights, attractions, and shopping. There was some construction on the street when we were staying there. The rooms were spacious and clean, with large and comfortable beds. Our view wasn't great (the one window directly faced other rooms of hotel), but this was consistent with the category of room we had booked. The lobby was nicely decorated for Chinese New Year. Doormen at the front did not offer much attention to guests. We had a chance to visit the pool, which was uncrowded and had a pleasant view of 5th Avenue. There were some other things I would not have expected from even a mid-tier hotel (and certainly not one at this price range). It was very strange to see vacuum cleaners in the hallways throughout our stay. Service was also a bit slow - we requested a roll-away bed three times over two days before finally receiving one. On the day of our departure, we received a card under our door that seemed to accuse us of smoking in the room. The tone was threatening and unpleasant - management should revisit the phrasing on this card (which I was told was distributed to all the rooms on our floor). Overall, it was a pleasant stay but fell well short of expectations given the brand and the price. In the same general area, we much preferred our stay at the Langham."

"We spent the weekend at The Peninsula celebrating my wife’s birthday, and it exceeded our expectations in every way. The room was incredibly comfortable and impressively quiet — a true oasis from the chaos of the streets below. The bed and bedding combination was one of the most comfortable I’ve ever experienced. It was actually the first time I’ve stayed somewhere and didn’t miss my own bed and pillows. What truly sets this property apart, though, is the staff. Every single interaction was warm, professional, and prompt. Sofia at the front desk went above and beyond — when I mentioned my travel beard trimmer had no batteries, she immediately had housekeeping send some up to our room. Every doorman greeted us by name without hesitation, and housekeeping worked with remarkable efficiency. We never once returned to a room that wasn’t refreshed or beautifully turned down. Two minor notes: there is no coffee maker in the room, so morning coffee requires ordering room service (there may be another option, but it wasn’t obvious). Also, there isn’t an ironing board in the room. That said, the team was extremely accommodating and had our clothes pressed and returned promptly — just something to note if you like handling quick touch-ups yourself before heading out. Overall, it was an outstanding, relaxing weekend, and we absolutely plan to return. We only wish we could have stayed longer"

"Absolutely terrible!!! I have stayed at this hotel multiple times and I was so disappointed to see how much this place has gone down hill. Decided to stay here for Valentines Day with my wife, the first night the bath tub would not drain and the faucet leaked all night - called housekeeping immediately they said they would send someone up right away - however no one showed up - the second night the lights in the room blinked on and off all night long - immediately called housekeeping to alert them of the problem - they said once again that they would send someone right up - of course once again no one showed - the next morning I ran into a manager at the elevator and showed him the video of the lights going on and off in the room and he laughed and said "Yea we have been having problems with ghosts" and that was it. When I checked out I once again explained the problems we had with the room two nights of our stay and was told that they would credit our bill 30% for our trouble - that was the third lie I was told and of course they billed the full amount. I would be disappointed if this was a Motel 6 but to get this kind of experience at a Peninsula Hotel in New York for $700 a night and to be repeatedly lied to is an embarrassment - NEVER AGAIN PENINSULA!! to many options in New York to be treated this way. Strongly suggest you stay somewhere else where they have respect for their guests. Absolutely terrible!!!
