PB hotel design editorial

At 580 feet and 38 stories, the slender concrete tower Rafael Viñoly Architects raised at 1185 Broadway is one of the more self-assured pieces of new construction to arrive in Midtown Manhattan in years — and The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad, which opened within it in 2022, earns the address. The building's massing is distinctive from the skyline: an exposed concrete frame visually lifts the tower away from its five-story L-shaped podium, giving the whole composition a quiet structural honesty rarely associated with luxury hospitality. The hotel draws its design narrative from the 28th Street Flower District immediately to the south, a conceit that could easily tip into pastiche but is handled with enough restraint across the 250 guest rooms to feel like atmosphere rather than theme. The interiors were divided among four studios — Rockwell Group, Lázaro Rosa-Violán, Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, and SUSURRUS International — and the divisions are legible in the images. Guest rooms by Rockwell carry warm limed oak paneling, nero marquina marble bases, and looping brass chandelier forms against floor-to-ceiling city views. The lobby lounge shifts register entirely: deep lacquered walls, jewel-toned velvets in celadon and teal, and organic branching light fixtures that feel closer to a private drawing room than a hotel common area. Most dramatically, the rooftop bar — almost certainly Brudnizki's hand — wraps blush-pink curved banquettes beneath teal ceilings hung with saucer-shaped brass pendants, the Hudson glittering through wraparound glass behind it all.

"Came here for drinks with friends at the rooftop - its free to go in even if you are not staying - the drinks are not cheap but then the drinks is more or less the price to see the view - as I paid for a beer for $16 - bit steep - overall a nice place"

"Horrible hotel with horrible service. How is this a Ritz Carlton? The hotel is in the ghetto, the front doormen are lazy and rude, the rooms are made with such cheap materials, and management doesn’t care. Can’t wait for the Ritz name to fall off this horrible hotel. Go to the Central Park location for better service."

"Phenomenal check in and this is one of my favorite nyc hotels. Upon check in I was reminded of this being a return visit (this is my 3rd time staying) and asked what brings me back. I described the room I had (and loved) last time and Cynthia at the front desk worked to make it happen again! Room views are incredible so I’m elated I decided to stay again and will be back."

"I recently checked out of a two-bedroom suite at the Ritz-Carlton NoMad, and the experience fell well short of expectations. At check-in, only part of the suite was available; the second bedroom was not cleaned and ready until approximately 7:00 p.m. When it was finally released to us, the room had a noticeable and unpleasant odor. The on-site manager that evening was attentive and genuinely helpful, though her ability to resolve the situation appeared constrained. Given that our stay totaled just under $14,000, the shortcomings were particularly disappointing. Beyond the delayed room readiness, there were several maintenance and housekeeping issues. The primary bathroom shower showed visible mold in the seams and corners, an issue that should be easily preventable with routine bleach cleaning. The steam function in the second bathroom shower was inoperable. On another day, housekeeping left behind dirty coffee cups, a container of melted ice, used towels on the floor, and other items despite the room having been marked as serviced. My most significant concern, however, was the overall impression that hotel operations prioritize rooftop bar patrons over overnight guests. Elevators were frequently congested with staff escorting bar traffic, and as a guest paying a premium rate, it felt as though hotel residents were secondary to non-guests visiting the venue. Finally, there were visible signs of wear throughout the suite, including chipped furniture and worn fabrics, which further detracted from the experience. I have stayed in many high-end hotels, and this property did not meet the standards typically associated with that tier. The only issue I formally raised with staff was the delayed readiness of the suite, for which I received a credit of $27.43. I did not specifically address the other deficiencies, as I am not inclined to present as an overly demanding guest. Notably, I did not request any concessions. That said, the fact that my next trip to New York this November is already booked at the Waldorf Astoria speaks for itself regarding my assessment of this property."

"Incredible stay We’ve been lucky enough to stay in many top hotels around the world and have dined at some incredible restaurants. I’d say this may be our favourite hotel of all time. Both my wife and I work within the industry and honestly couldn’t fault a thing at this incredible hotel The restaurants, the bars, the location, the rooms, the rooftop area with unrivalled views of the city are what we booked for. The reason we would come back, is because the staff made us feel so welcome. We traveled with our 5 year old daughter and she had the best time. From hand picked flowers on arrival to many staff members looking out for us at all times. She felt truly spoiled! A HUGE mention and our thanks to Kevin in the lobby for looking after us during our stay. Genuinely one of the best hosts we have ever met. It was a huge snow storm in NY during our trip but we felt right at home at the NoMad Ritz Carlton. We loved our meal at Bazaar Meat by Jose Andres, chef Victor and team have created a really special experience. Cocktail bar downstairs serves real classics with a twist. Really friendly professional bartenders again so friendly. Nubeluz is special - do it. Even for one drink, make sure to wonder outside to the observation deck. Thank you to all of the team."
