PB hotel design editorial

At 76th Street and Madison Avenue, where the Upper East Side settles into its most residential and self-assured register, a 1926 building by architects Bien & Prince has carried several identities over its nearly hundred-year life — apartment house, discreet hideaway for long-stay Manhattan regulars, and now, following a thorough reimagining by Corinthia Hotels, The Surrey in its most considered incarnation yet. The exterior facade, visible in the images, retains its limestone base and ornamental entry surround, the canopied porte-cochère framing a quietly ceremonial arrival that suits the neighborhood's understated confidence far better than any grander gesture would. Inside, the design work — led by Pierre-Yves Rochon, whose fingerprints are recognizable in the Calacatta marble lobby floor with its inlaid dark border, the lacquered ceiling panels, and the bronze-framed steel partition screens — navigates the central tension of the project with considerable skill: how to honor an Upper East Side building of genuine age and character without retreating into pastiche. The guestrooms answer in warm burl-wood nightstands, camel-toned upholstered headboards, arched brass-mounted mirrors, and swirling custom carpet patterns that carry an Art Deco sensibility without being period-literal. The bar moves in a more atmospheric direction entirely — dark-paneled walls, ribbed ceiling details, and large-format photography creating a room that belongs to late evening, amber light catching the backlit spirits shelf in a satisfyingly cinematic way. Across its 190 rooms and suites spread over seventeen floors, the hotel makes a persuasive case for grown-up Manhattan luxury.

"Stayed at The Surrey recently in an effort to change up my years-long routine of Nomad-area stays and I am officially in love with this property. Beautiful interiors, impeccable (beyond!) service, chic restaurant and lounge, and lovely spa. I made use of all the facilities (save the gym), including one wonderful early morning relaxing in the salt tepidarium and sauna. Shout-out to Lucas in the spa for his delightful hospitality. We had an amazing dinner at Casa Tua one evening and a fantatsic breakfast each morning there. Our room was perfection - super quiet (facing the interior) and the bathroom was stocked with everything you could need. But the biggest draw here is the service. If a staff member is anywhere near you, you will not even be able to push the elevator button yourself as they will beat you to it. Every staff member greeted us warmly and I've never been offered so many bottles of water in my life. Every time we stepped outside, we were asked if we needed the house car. And the concierge was able to get us into a restaurant with notoriously impossible-to-get reservations. Additional recognition must go to John, Miguel, and Steven at the door, Anthony at the front desk, Dan in the house car, and all of the wonderful housekeeping staff for their constant warmth and care. I can't wait to return to The Surrey!"

"The newly renovated Surrey Hotel is nothing short of spectacular—a true gem on the Upper East Side that perfectly blends timeless elegance with fresh, modern sophistication. From the moment you arrive, the experience feels elevated and personal. We were regular guests prior to the renovation - the exceeded all hopes. Every detail thought of. A special thanks to Julio, the doorman, who sets the tone immediately with his warm, welcoming presence. Every time you walk through the doors—he is gracious, attentive, and genuinely kind. The interiors are stunning—beautifully reimagined with refined details, that feels both intimate and effortlessly chic. Every corner reflects thoughtful design and a commitment to excellence. Dining at Casa Tua inside the hotel was equally impressive. Taylor, our server, was outstanding—knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. She guided us through the menu with confidence and enthusiasm, making the entire experience feel curated and special. The Surrey has truly outdone itself with this renovation—it’s not just a stay, it’s an experience. I spent 3 nights in March and just returned for the day today and stopped by to say hi to Julio and have breakfast at Casa Tua. I’m so glad I did and can’t wait to return!"

"This was our second time staying at The Surrey. It will not be our last. We love this property. The location between Central Park and Madison Avenue is special. The team at The Surrey is unmatched and that includes the concierge, front desk, restaurant staff, and the fine people who work the front door."

"15/10 stay. Staff was wonderful. Room was very quiet, comfortable, and luxurious. Great water pressure in spacious shower. Nice location for upper east side attractions and convenient to subway. Water provided daily for nespresso machine and replenished in evening. Was upgraded to grand deluxe room at check-in and found a bowl of fruit with nice welcome letter in the room, which was a Godsend after a 1.5 hour cab ride from JFK. Would stay again in a heartbeat!"
