PB hotel design editorial

Kit Kemp's conviction that a hotel room should feel like the inside of a very particular mind — curious, layered, unafraid of colour — finds perhaps its most fully realised expression in The Whitby Hotel, which opened on West 56th Street in 2017 as Firmdale's first purpose-built New York property. The facade, designed by Stephen Jacobs Group, steps back in a series of limestone-clad setbacks that nod to Manhattan's Midtown commercial vernacular while the steel-grid windows running floor to ceiling give each room the generous light of a proper loft. Forty-five floors compressed into an elegant mid-rise, housing 86 rooms and suites. Inside, Kemp's interiors deploy her signature technique of controlled collision: Mughal-arched headboards upholstered in scarlet block-print fabric against grey grasscloth walls, ochre silk wallcovering warmed by chinoiserie embroidery on lacquered navy, every room furnished as though assembled from a lifetime of obsessive collecting rather than a purchase order. The dining room gathers mismatched upholstered chairs — floral, geometric, shell-backed — beneath a tiered brass chandelier hung with frosted glass shades, walls lined with blue-and-white transferware plates above a marble pediment. At the bar, dozens of wicker baskets suspended from a steel grid overhead create an installation that functions as both ceiling and provocation, marble-top lattice stools and red leather lounge chairs arranged beneath. The cumulative effect is closer to a well-edited private house than any conventional idea of a New York hotel.

"The Whitby is the midtown Manhattan outpost of one of my favorite chains, Firmdale. What I really like about Firmdale is its consistency, in both layout/design and service. They are old-school hoteliers with flair. Rooms are spacious by Manhattan standards, well-outfitted and desirably quiet given the location. Service and F&B are all excellent."

"3 night stay at the beginning of October 2025. Location was fantastic- just around the corner to 5th Avenue shopping and conveniently placed for Carnegie Hall. All the staff were really helpful and professional- from the bellmen to reception and a big shout out to the concierge ( who gave us a great lunch recommendation and helpfully booked our transfer back to JFK). Experience of room service was swift and polite. Room itself was great... and very quiet given it's huge floor to ceiling windows . Room was also stocked with every amenity you need for a short break. Bathroom had lovely bathroom products and a wonderful power shower. Breakfast choices were solid and used quality ingredients, only minor criticism was that the plates were not as hot as I would personally like. In summary, if you are looking for a hotel with it's own individual and eclectic style paired with great service, I would highly recommend."

"My family and I stayed at the Whitby Hotel in NYC over Christmas. The hotel was wonderful and the service was outstanding. Everyone was so nice and helpful. The food in the hotel was excellent as well. Great location close to Central Park, Broadway and many great sites."

"Loved our stay at The Whitby. We came to New York City to see the sites for Christmas, and this could not have been a better location. We were warmly greeted, our room was immaculate and so beautifully decorated as is the rest of the hotel. A quiet location is also very important to us, and we slept without any problems. We had a quick walk up to Fifth and Sixth Avenue. It was very convenient, close to shopping, restaurants, Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall. This is a great choice and the staff is very accommodating. They even found a room for us after our flight was cancelled and we had to stay an extra night. The only area we thought needed a little attention was the restaurant. Even with reservations, there was always a wait to be seated and a bit of confusion amongst the staff. Beyond that the service was excellent."

"There is no doubt that the hotel is lovely - and extortionary expensive as a result. The staff were largely lovely apart from a very sullen maitre d in the restaurant who was so moody there were complaints! I cant say that it was value for money though, especially given the atrocious customer service I had afterwards. Like all hotels, Whitby puts a "hold" on your card when you arrive to cover costs. however, the hold is 150% of your expected bill - and this hold is not removed by the Whitby promptly. As a result, four days after leaving the hotel, a whopping $9000 hold exists over my current account - even after i have paid $65000 bill for four nights - and this has resulted in all my direct debits and other payments being declined causing chaos for me and hardship. It is a nightmare - and the Whitby couldn't give a sh+t. Awful."
