PB hotel design editorial

Directly across from Central Park's southern edge, on West 56th Street where Midtown's commercial density gives way to the park's tree line, a 34-floor glass tower houses Thompson Central Park New York with an address that makes its design brief almost write itself: the views are the architecture. Rockwell Group handled the interiors, translating that advantage into rooms where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the park's canopy like a living canvas, the autumnal foliage visible in the images reducing every other decorative gesture to supporting cast. The 587 rooms are furnished in a palette of charcoal, warm oak, and brass — open black-steel shelving units double as room dividers and dressing tables, wall-mounted globe sconces in brushed brass providing the kind of considered residential lighting that most midtown hotels abandon in favour of overhead grids. The lobby and bar spaces make the stronger design argument. A double-height atrium lounge deploys indoor olive trees, navy velvet banquettes, and copper-toned pendant lights in a composition that carries more the atmosphere of a well-appointed private club than a hotel public room — a grand piano anchoring the far end signals intent clearly. The ground-floor bar takes a different register entirely: a long, darkened corridor of black millwork and green leather stools beneath a ceiling dense with trailing botanicals, the greenery overhead creating a compression and intimacy that the park-view rooms, for all their expansiveness, deliberately withhold.

Thompson Central Park New York, by Hyatt Reviews

"The Thompson Central Park is a stylish, modern hotel in a very convenient midtown location. Bookable through Hyatt points, redemption value was fantastic pre-devaluation. While the hotel lacks certain amenities and the historic charm of some peer hotels (like its cousin the Beekman downtown), the location and consistency of the experience are fantastic. Check in: We arrived after 3pm, the designated check-in time. Our room was available immediately and check in staff were very helpful making it a seamless experience. Having stayed at the hotel before, staff focused on getting us to our room rather than re-explaining all the amenities. Room: While there were some chic midcentury touches to the room, there was nothing terribly remarkable about the design. However, the layout was spacious for New York, and the bed was very comfortable. I appreciated the full-size couch by the window. While a similar price point at another hotel might get you a view or historical charm, the benefit of the generic character is the efficient layout of the room and consistency of the product. Amenities: The amenities at this hotel are typical for what one might find in midtown. There is no pool, and the fitness center is small and underground. There is also a spa, which I did not have time to use during my stay. The dining offering is the most impressive amenity of the hotel. Parker's is a bar that often features live music, Indian Accent is a well-awarded Indian restaurant, and Burger Joint is one of the best burgers I've had in New York, frequented by locals in the neighborhood as well. However, the best part about this hotel is the location. It is close to almost every subway line, central park, the theater district, and more while still being on a street that is pleasant to walk down. That is the number one reason that I will likely come back to this hotel. Service: Our stay was too short to experience any standout moments, but staff were consistently helpful and attentive. One small hiccup was when I sent my shoes to be shined; they were promised to be ready by 8am, but ended up being delivered closer to 9:30, slightly delaying the start to our day. Bottom line: The Thompson Central Park is a top notch option when considering a mid-range stay in New York. The location is unmatched and the consistency of the experience is wonderful. In the future, I might stay at another property for more luxury or character, but I will always be happy to come back here."

"Excellent hotel, great room (upgraded to high floor), helpful staff, ideal location. Breakfast on Saturday was almost impossible. We had to wait over an hour for a table and then another thirty minutes for the food to arrive, which when it did was cold."

"This Hyatt is definitely not a five star hotel. A four star at best. They provided us with mediocre maid service. The rooms not clean and they always forgot to provide us with extra towels. Room temp was always too hot or too cold. Club lounge was terrible. I have never seen a worse offering of food at any hotel with a club lounge. They can do better Much better!! When we lodged a complaint, hotel management offered a mediocre solution to our problems. They offered us a breakfast credit. The following morning, when we ate breakfast on the first floor, it took 45 minutes to get our food. It was torture and we did not want to return. I will say that the front desk employees and the bellmen were all very professional and kind. I also appreciated the fact that when I discovered error charges on my bill, they quickly removed them without further discussion."

"Just back from a 4 night stay. I used my Chase Sapphire Reserve as this is an Edit hotel. If you are not familiar with this you should check out the credit card ,if you travel a few times a year it is well worth it. As soon I checked in it was recognized as a Chase booking and I was offered an upgraded room. It was on the high floor but was smaller then the one I booked which was King Deluxe 410 Square feet, I declined due to size of room. I then was offered use of the lounge on the 3rd floor for snacks, drinks coffee etc. I thought this was a great option as it was my decision to not take the upgrade. We also had breakfast included up to $60 per person,as well as a $100.00 credit to use at any of the restaurants. The room was spacious we had a large sitting area with a couch and 2 chairs. View was of another building . Bed and linens were comfortable. Water bottles were replenished daily as well as Nespresso pods. There was also a refrigerator in the room. The room was clean and comfortable. All staff went above and beyond from the doorman to every waiter we encountered to the front desk staff and lets not forget the hardworking housekeeping staff. Our included breakfast was at Parkers right off the lobby. It was busy a couple of mornings and we had to wait for seating,no more then 10 minutes. Menu choices were great and the coffee was excellent. We used our $100 credit at The Burger Joint right off the lobby. Just burgers and fries, which was enjoyable. Location of this hotel was great ,we unfortunately had rain 2.5 days but put on our raincoats and walked all over . We explored Central Park which is only 2 blocks away. Plenty of great shopping and dining near by. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel. You will not be disappointed."
