PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings on Broadway in Saratoga Springs carry as much civic weight as the five-story Italianate facade that has anchored the street since 1877. The Adelphi Hotel — shuttered for years, then painstakingly restored and reopened in 2017 under the ownership of Niki Leondakis and partners — is one of the last surviving grand Victorian hotels from the era when Saratoga was America's summer capital, its racecourse drawing Vanderbilts and gamblers in equal measure. The white-painted facade, with its arched second-floor loggia, bracketed cornice, and cast-iron detailing lit against the evening sky, presents as a period piece that has somehow stayed in the conversation. Inside, interior designer Stacy Glassgold of Glen & Company worked the tension between preservation and livability with a sharp eye. Guest rooms carry deep-toned damask wallcovering, dark-stained hardwood floors, and deep-buttoned sapphire velvet headboards set within arched plasterwork niches — the effect somewhere between a Hudson Valley manor and a well-edited European townhouse. The bar runs herringbone oak flooring beneath mahogany-panelled walls, red leather counter stools pulled to a black granite top, globe pendants throwing warm light across marble bistro tables and navy channel-back banquettes. A limestone courtyard behind the building handles outdoor dining with woven chevron bistro chairs and navy cushioned sofas. Across its 32 rooms and suites, the hotel earns its place as the most historically grounded address in upstate New York's most storied resort town.

"My family and I chose the Adelphi Hotel for our wedding weekend on January 2, 2026, filling the property with guests and spending thousands of dollars across multiple suites. What followed was one of the worst experiences of my life. On the morning of my wedding, my custom-tailored after-party outfit was hanging in the Jim Dandy suite's dressing area in a white plastic garment bag. When I went to change into it during my reception, we realized it was gone. The hotel's own security footage confirmed that only housekeeping staff entered the suite in the hours between our departure and discovery. Hotel staff admitted to throwing away my wedding dress garment bag as well. Rooms Division Manager, Heidi Marcellus, confirmed the bag was found in the trash. With nothing to change into, I wore my silk wedding gown for the rest of the evening — through snow, slush, and salt-covered sidewalks. I have since received a professional quote of up to $1,350 to clean and preserve the gown. My mother missed the last dance of my wedding searching the hotel for my missing outfit. The hotel's response? Hotel staff accused me of trying to "swindle money from the hotel," stated this "happens all the time," and offered $750. My total documented damages are $2,011.55. The hotel has since stopped responding entirely. I am sharing this so future guests — especially anyone planning a wedding stay — know what to expect when something goes wrong here."

"We are getting married in Saratoga in October and reserve two suites at The Adelphi. When we were in the area in March, Sarah at the front desk was so incredibly kind and helpful! She allowed us to walk in and view our suites. She also gave us a brief tour of the other suites that are available that we could take photos in. She was fantastic, and the hotel is magnificent!!"

"Our expectations were exceeded during our recent brief stay at The Adelphi! The valet staff was friendly and helpful and offered assistance with restaurant recommendations, and the front desk staff was gracious. We enjoyed a welcome glass of sparkling wine as we checked in, and the festive holiday decor in the lobby was a welcome sight after our drive from New York City. Our renovated room was gorgeous and pristine, as was the elegant, spacious bath. The bed was particularly plush and comfortable! The minibar, stocked with alcoholic beverages and sodas, was complimentary. Wow, what Turndown service, too, in their low season, was a lovely touch. We visited the gym and were impressed with the new equipment, the locker rooms, sauna and the plentiful water and water refilling stations - which all of the best hotels are offering now to cut back on plastic bottle waste. The building itself is historic and the stunningly facade painstakingly maintained. It’s a treat to visit a hotel like the Adelphi where they balance attention to the hotel’s history with contemporary amenities so well. We highly recommend and look forward to a return visit."

"On the outside, the Adelphi looks spectacular. But inside, it’s one of the worst hotels we’ve ever stayed in. This hotel cost us over $900 per night during racing season in Saratoga. I was not worth even a third of that. I have never experienced a bed as awful as the one in the new Adelphi. It is extremely soft and has no edges. It slopes down at the sides. The effect is like trying to sleep on a marshmallow. Sleep was close to impossible anyway, because the AC sounds like a beeping car alarm. We had to turn it off to get any sleep, and it was hot when we were there, so this was uncomfortable. Our room 408 was tiny. It has one miniscule closet with no room to hang a dress; we had to drape one over the bathtub. The Toto toilet is not just ridiculous; it is smelly. There is an obvious plumbing issue. Our guess is that the plumber can’t get to the old lines. The shower curtain was brown and moldy on the bottom. The shampoo and conditioner bottles didn’t dispense properly. Apparently, bar soap is rationed; we never got a refill even though it was obvious we used it at the sink and in the shower many times. At reception, the young man was clueless about where I could park long term (e.g. 24 hours a day for three days). We noted that other hotels had added parking in reaction to new parking restrictions in Saratoga. But not the Adelphi! When I went to get coffee to take up to the porch off the library for my morning reading on Saturday, the coffeemaker was broken and there was no cream in the pot. The library porch was cordoned off by drapes and shades that would not move when I tried the buttons. There was ONE piece of paper in the big stationery box. The décor in our room and indeed the entire hotel interior is tacky and wholly inappropriate to this grand old hotel. The layout feels cramped, except when you get to the new back section, apparently designed for wedding and loud music, which feels like a desert. When we went to check out, I was handed the manager's card. There is a typo in the e-mail address. Why was I not surprised? After sending a letter to the manager, I was promised a discount. This never came through."
