PB hotel design editorial

Few addresses on the East End carry as much layered history as the oceanfront bluff at 290 Old Montauk Highway, where Gurney's Montauk Resort and Seawater Spa has stood in various forms since the 1920s. The property's bones belong to an older Montauk — shingle-clad, weathered, unhurried — and the current iteration preserves that vernacular instinct even as a 2016 renovation pushed the interiors toward a more deliberately styled coastal aesthetic. The guest rooms and suites run to bleached wood, natural linen, and a soft palette of sand, slate, and ocean blue, the materials chosen to mirror what lies just beyond the glass rather than to declare a design signature. The resort stretches along a private Atlantic beach with 149 rooms across low-slung buildings that step down toward the water, their gray-shingled exteriors sitting comfortably within the shaggy dune landscape. Public spaces lean into a relaxed nautical register — woven textures, rope-wrapped accents, whitewashed surfaces — without tipping into the kind of theme-park anchors and oars that plague lesser beach properties. The seawater spa, fed directly from the Atlantic and one of only two thalassotherapy pools in North America, remains the resort's defining amenity, giving Gurney's a therapeutic identity that separates it from the purely social Hamptons circuit. The pool terrace, shielded from the prevailing southwest wind by a low white pergola structure, frames the ocean view in a way that makes the Atlantic feel curated rather than simply present.

About

Situated on Montauk's most pristine stretch of oceanfront real estate, Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa is a Hamptons icon and the only four-season resort in Montauk. Providing guests with direct access to a 2,000 ft. private sand beach, Gurney's features 158 rooms, suites and beachfront cottages, each with dramatic ocean views. With five unique dining and cocktail venues, guests can enjoy a wide range of dining options, from elegant seasonal cuisine to casual fare to grab-and-go café favorites. All of Gurney's venues feature spectacular ocean views, none more so than The Beach Club, which provides the only on-beach dining experience in the Hamptons. No trip to Gurney's is complete without visiting The Seawater Spa, a one-of-a-kind, 30,000 sq. ft. retreat recently reimagined with the help of AIRE Ancient Baths creator Alonso Balaguer Designs. Spa highlights include co-ed relaxation areas; eucalyptus oil-infused steam rooms; four contrast bathing pools, and our ocean-fed, saltwater indoor pool. Newly designed treatment rooms feature indoor/outdoor space for chromotherapy, hydrotherapy and full body treatments. The resort also features daily wellness classes, dedicated strength and cardio rooms, and a studio for private or group classes.

"This was a very disappointing stay at supposedly an upscale hotel. Nothing in the room worked! The room safe was broken - they replaced it 3 times - still couldn't get one to work! This meant we had to bring our wallets & phones to the beach, the pool, & everywhere we went as we could not safely leave them in the room esp since workers kept entering the room to try to fix the numerous issues. The handle & lock on the sliding door was broken. The bedroom light switch was broken & would not turn off. The door to the room would not lock. We did notify the Guest Relations Mgr who comp'd us for dinner but our stay was ruined!"

"Just ok. If it was less money I wouldn’t be as harsh with review- but for what you’re paying you expect a level of excellence. We had a partial ocean front room. It was mostly a view of the parking lot - but we could still partially see ocean so not a lie. The problem was you could hear EVERY footstep above us. And even them talking (mumbles not what they’re saying). In my opinion that’s unacceptable for a $600+ room a night. We asked to move to higher room because we couldn’t sleep and luckily they were able to - which we appreciated. Slept fine then! Kudos to them for fixing. Spa very nice. Gigi’s restaurant food was good. I also don’t really get the added resort fees (I know it’s common these days) when you’re paying for every amenity anyways. We paid for our room, we paid for our spa service, we paid for our dinner…so what amenity did we use that we had to pay resort fee for? I guess valet but that’s not worth $80+:). When you’re paying a lot for a room it’s an annoying extra charge IMO. Beach is beautiful, montauk is great - those were just my complaints. Also they blast their signature scent too hard throughout property!"

"I took my mom to Gurneys for her 65th birthday and to relax after losing my father. While montauk is a special place for us and always beautiful, our stay at gurneys was quite shocking to say the least. The front desk was not helpful, it was almost like the twilight zone.. when asking questions they just stared. They were frustrated when we asked to store our luggage so we could attend our massages before check in. The hotel itself was extremely dirty. Dry wall falling off and sprinkling the hallways, untouched for days. The ceiling on our floor started to flood and no one contacted us about it, instead they started to open the ceiling as water was pooling into the hotel rooms nearby. Then about an hour later the fire alarms went off. The spa isnt as nice as it once was, again, the space was dirty and unkempt. The rooms lacked a basic trash bin, laundry bag and our neighbors were able to see through the trees on our patio and into our room. At one point i said, we shouldve stayed at wavecrest. The food was good, the bartenders were nice, the spa was excellent. Sergio, Sandra (massage) and Robert (facial) were incredible. I would suggest you go to the spa then stay somewhere more affordable that is clean."

"Although there was a lot of activity preparing for the upcoming season, the accommodations were great. One drawback was the indoor pool was not in operation. However, $200 was taken off our bill as a courtesy. GiGi’s restaurant on premises was superb. Incredible staff."
