PB hotel design editorial

For nearly six decades, the corner of North Tryon and Fifth Street in Uptown Charlotte belonged to Ivey's Department Store, a beloved Carolinas retail institution whose 1924 Beaux-Arts building shaped the commercial identity of the city's core. When the store finally closed in 1990, the building passed through various uses before its most consequential reinvention: The Ivey's Hotel, which opened in 2018 as a 57-room boutique property that treats its mercantile past not as backstory to be politely acknowledged but as the animating principle of its entire design vocabulary. The facade visible from the street preserves the original limestone cladding and tall divided-light windows, while an Art Deco lantern above the entrance sets the ornamental register for everything within. Interior designer Sarah Cobb developed a layered, collector's sensibility for the public spaces and guest rooms — salon walls covered floor to ceiling in gilded frames, ornate mirrors, and antique sconces arranged in dense gallery compositions, a tufted Chesterfield sofa in sapphire velvet anchoring the lobby fireplace beneath a wire-cage crystal chandelier. Guest rooms follow a palette of charcoal, warm grey, and cobalt, with blue velvet tub chairs on chrome legs, damask accent walls, acanthus-scroll area rugs, and dark wide-plank hardwood floors that connect the rooms to the walnut-paneled library bar below, where leather nailhead dining chairs and illuminated bookshelves full of curated antiques sustain the atmosphere of an exceptionally well-dressed private club.

"Incredible gem of a hotel in Charlotte. Beautiful decor that is French themed, tasteful and spacious rooms that have visual interest and tremendous comfort, and made us feel right at home. I would 100% stay here again, it would be my hotel of choice in Charlotte and frankly in North Carolina."

"The room was extremely nice but the overall experience was pretty lackluster. The staff were curteous but not friendly. There was minimal communication. Our room was not ready when we arrived at check-in time. We had to wait 20 minutes. There was no offer as to what to do in the meantime. The lobby area in the hotel, which was beautiful, was closed. There wasn't really anywhere to sit to wait. We were there for a special accoasion, which wasn't acknowledge or said anything about. When we left, the person just checked us out. They didn't ask how our stay was or anything. Just okay you are checked out. That was it. Totally subpar service and experience. I expected a lot more of a Michilen-rated hotel. I have gotten better service at a Hilton with a $120/night room. Extremely dissapointed."

"From the time we arrived too the day that we left the experience was top notch. We only stayed one night but that one night hit every spot on the list. the room was amazing, and the in-room dinner was even better. Will definitely recommend to anyone looking for a non-traditional hotel experience."

"Fantastic boutique hotel! Excellent service from arrival to exit. We booked through the Amex Fine Hotels program, and it was phenomenal. Great location to explore Charlotte from. The room and bathroom were beautiful, and the bed was comfortable. We ate at Sophie's Lounge in the hotel for dinner and breakfast. The hostess, Jasmine, was fantastic and took great care of us during dinner. We will be back."

"We attended a concert at the Spectrum Center so wanted a nearby hotel. We picked this initially based on location and were just so pleased with every aspect of the hotel. It's quite small and yet has everything you might need. The rooms are gorgeous and extremely comfortable. Every member of the staff was polite, friendly, and professional. Our room was spotless. We stayed in an atrium king and it was incredibly quiet. I appreciated the large bathroom with double vanity, soaking tub, large walk-in shower and separated toilet. This will definitely be out go to hotel when we are in the area."
