PB hotel design editorial

At nearly 5,000 feet in the Plott Balsam range above Maggie Valley, where the Blue Ridge gives way to the western face of the Great Smokies, a working cattle and horse ranch has hosted guests since 1939. Cataloochee Ranch grew from that original homestead into a spread of cabins, chalets, and gathering structures distributed across rolling meadows — rustic mountain vernacular buildings in dark-stained timber and field stone, their gambrel roofs and exposed log trusses in easy dialogue with the surrounding spruce and fir. The open-air pavilion visible from the grounds, with its heavy post-and-beam frame and stone fireplace chimney, carries the atmosphere of a park service structure from the National Park rustic tradition — the kind of thing the Civilian Conservation Corps would recognize — set against views of the Smokies fading blue in the middle distance. Inside, the interiors balance that inherited ruggedness with considered comfort. Guest rooms in the original cabins preserve their tongue-and-groove wood paneling, warmed now with wax-canvas headboards and Pendleton-style geometric quilts in navy, rust, and ochre, while framed natural history prints — butterfly specimens, botanical illustrations — line the walls above iron-framed beds. The bar and lounge makes a more dramatic move: dry-stacked stone walls and exposed timber ceiling joists play against a lacquered crimson ceiling, a black tufted Chesterfield, shearling-upholstered lounge chairs, and a purple-veined marble cocktail table. The tension between the raw and the theatrical is exactly right.

"Excellent facility, courteous staff. Mars Hill University cloggers were a special treat. It broke down barriers for both the young and the adults. Kudos to David and Annie."

"This is a beautiful ranch property with stunning views. The cabins were comfortable and very well appointed with high end baths and bedding. Each cabin had a mini fridge and a Nespresso machine as well as a water kettle and nice selection of teas. The food was fabulous and the service top notch! The ranch buildings were really stunning as well as the grounds. A fun place for a family vacation and many activities from horse back riding to art classes. Lots of kiddos having fun along with the adults."

"It has been a week since our visit to Cataloochee Ranch and not a day goes by that my family has not spoken about the memories made during our visit. From a family that loves to travel and see the world, I am so glad we found this hidden gem in our home state. What I didn't expect was a location from which I never wanted to leave. Even before we arrived, the staff was kind and accommodating and wanted to insure that our visit was perfect. What I didn't take advantage of was the pre scheduling of activities at the Ranch. This I highly recommend as slot fill up fast and may not be available upon your arrival. On the day we arrived, it was if we were meeting extended family for the first time. Hannah was so warm and welcoming. She took the time to explain all activities at the Ranch and provided us with the general lay of the land. On numerous occasions we crossed paths again with Hannah and the fact that she remembered our sons name and took time out for him was above and beyond. The cabins had a modern rustic appeal that was inviting from the moment you entered the home. The beds, which are always a travel concern of mine, were perfect. The bathrooms were large and had huge walk-in showers. We stayed in a cabin that accommodated 4 with a pull out sofa. Every evening after dinner, we returned to full turn down service which became a welcome surprise after a long day. The Ranch itself was superb! The grounds were meticulously kept and every view was picture perfect. Mornings were serene and peaceful as the clouds like smoke, rolled though the mountain tops. Throughout the day children could be seen running about with their new found friends. Afternoon storms were porch perfect with a cup of coffee and the sound of rain on the tin roof. The Switchback, with its elegant rustic design, serves all meals throughout the day but evenings were for gathering. The food is prepared and served in a style expected at from an upscale restaurant. However, I do recommend opting to sit on the veranda at least once during your stay. From the staff to the accommodations, from the picturesque views to the adventures, it was a perfect family vacation! I could not recommend Cataloochee Ranch enough."

"Incredible experience! Our cabin was lovely, the service wonderful, the food absolutely delicious. We spent our time on the ranch hiking the trails, doing the challenge course, and lounging by the pool. There's nothing better than sitting around the fire after dinner, with a cocktail in your hand, looking out over the Smoky Mountains."

"We stayed in Gooseberry and LOVED our cozy room! It was a short walk to the restaurant, the fireplace was lovely at night, and the bed was comfortable. The rooms are decorated beautifully! Dinner was incredible, and the staff are personable, kind, and knowledgeable about their offerings. From suggesting local beers and spirits based on our preferences to the server explaining dishes with enthusiasm and care, we left already excited to plan our next trip!"
