PB hotel design editorial

At nearly 5,000 feet in the Plott Balsam range above Maggie Valley, where the Blue Ridge gives way to the western face of the Great Smokies, a working cattle and horse ranch has hosted guests since 1939. Cataloochee Ranch grew from that original homestead into a spread of cabins, chalets, and gathering structures distributed across rolling meadows — rustic mountain vernacular buildings in dark-stained timber and field stone, their gambrel roofs and exposed log trusses in easy dialogue with the surrounding spruce and fir. The open-air pavilion visible from the grounds, with its heavy post-and-beam frame and stone fireplace chimney, carries the atmosphere of a park service structure from the National Park rustic tradition — the kind of thing the Civilian Conservation Corps would recognize — set against views of the Smokies fading blue in the middle distance. Inside, the interiors balance that inherited ruggedness with considered comfort. Guest rooms in the original cabins preserve their tongue-and-groove wood paneling, warmed now with wax-canvas headboards and Pendleton-style geometric quilts in navy, rust, and ochre, while framed natural history prints — butterfly specimens, botanical illustrations — line the walls above iron-framed beds. The bar and lounge makes a more dramatic move: dry-stacked stone walls and exposed timber ceiling joists play against a lacquered crimson ceiling, a black tufted Chesterfield, shearling-upholstered lounge chairs, and a purple-veined marble cocktail table. The tension between the raw and the theatrical is exactly right.

"We went with our family and 2 other families. We had kids ranging from 5yo to 16yo and all had fun. Ranch is so peaceful. Cabins are very nice. Staff is amazing and very helpful. On top of all that there’s fantastic food! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!"

"Had an AMAZING time at the Cataloochee Ranch. We went during the "off season" but it was still an amazing adventure. It even snowed during our stay and the snow made it extra special. The staff goes ABOVE AND BEYOND and makes you feel like family and the accommodations make you feel like you are at home. My friend and I stayed at the Woody cabin which has by far the best views of ALL the cabins. We would highly recommend spending the extra money to wake up to the unobstructed views of the mountains and sunrise. The food was amazing and the cocktails were superb. We really couldn't have asked for a better girls weekend. The UTV ride and feeding the cattle with Trace were fantastic experiences that we really enjoyed. We had reservations to do horse back riding but because of the snow and ice we had to cancel them...on our list for our next visit. I can definitely see us coming every year for a girls trip. It was awesome! Hats off to the owners and staff for making the Cataloochee ranch a great experience!!"

"I am almost reluctant to say anythng. Maybe it should be awful to keep it a secret, but lying is a sin. This is a must visit destination. Beautiful topography and away, where batteries get recharged to face an ever more complex world. UTV tour a must and the cuisine and wine are superb. you will arrive skeptical and leave wishing to stay. We stayed over Thanksgiving. You know family, can't pick them and Thanksgiving can be trying, but The Ranch made it fun for this years event."

"Cataloochee Ranch was a wonderful restorative experience in a beautiful part of North Carolina mountains! We were there with family for several nights and enjoyed every aspect of the ranch and the proximity to some of the Carolina towns as well as great Smoky Mountain national Park"
