PB hotel design editorial

A white-painted brick corner building in Wilmington's historic downtown — its arched windows trimmed in black, its street-level shopfront glazed in sage green — anchors ARRIVE Wilmington within the grain of a neighborhood that has been trading and living on these blocks since the antebellum era. The hotel, which spread across several connected structures to reach its current configuration of around 68 rooms, works the tension between careful preservation and a decidedly contemporary sensibility with more confidence than most properties of its size manage. Inside, the design layers mid-century walnut bed frames and brass wall sconces against dark-stained hardwood floors and paneled wainscoting painted in warm greige, while the bathrooms introduce blush zellige-style tile and unlacquered brass fixtures for contrast. The restaurant carries the building's exposed red brick into a dining room finished with encaustic cement tile floors in a faded aquamarine pattern, rope room dividers, Windsor-back chairs with burgundy leather seats, and a palm-print ceiling mural that tips the whole composition toward a kind of coastal exuberance without losing its footing. Out back, a garden courtyard arranges black-painted Adirondack chairs around a fire pit, a lawn bowling strip threading through plantings of ornamental grasses toward white-painted iron bistro furniture — a backyard register that feels genuinely domestic rather than contrived, and one that understands exactly what Wilmington's humid, green-shadowed character asks of a hotel.

"This was an unusual property with several unfriendly quirks. First is parking. It is done across the street in a third party lot. You have to go through a ridiculous procedure to register your car. The hotel should make this easier. Next the room. We stayed in room #35. The front door is 90% clear glass. In order to gain some privacy, you have to pull a drape completely across another glass panel and the door. In the room there is a money making minibar situation with snacks and yet no coffee machine and no access to coffee other than the adjacent restaurant when it is open. Also there is no ice machine. How can you not have an ice machine available for your guest? And why not have one of those automatic coffee machines in the 24-hour open lobby? Very disappointed in this hotel and will not be staying here in the future."

"We stayed here one night. The grounds are very nice with an outdoor bar in the garden as well as several fire pits. The rooms are in several different buildings. Our room which was on the first floor…though there are a couple of steps….was a small bedroom with a queen sized bed, two nightstands, and a rod from the wall which was the “closet”, the bathroom was on the small side but had a nice sized living room area. There were cupboards with shelves in the hallway which could be used for clothes storage. The hotel was well maintained and the furniture was retro modern. Though there are outlets around the rooms there was nothing bedside to charge electronics. When we returned from dinner though we had turned on the AC, the room had not cooled down and the vent was blowing warm air, so we sought the assistance of the receptionist. He tried very hard but acknowledged that it was an old system and the AC was not working properly. He returned shortly thereafter and offered a standing fan. It made it comfortable to sleep. He certainly went above and beyond to make us comfortable. In the morning the AC was working fine. The TV listed a bunch of stations but NBC, ABC and CBS did not show those stations. Very strange. The restaurant was closed for breakfast since they were down a cook but offered free coffee and pastries. The hotel is definitely different and unique."

"The hotel has a nice courtyard and outdoor bar - when staffed, which it often wasn't when it was supposed to be. We found service in general to be an issue at the Arrive. The receptionist didn't return my smile when I arrived and was curt and not very nice when telling me I couldn't check in since the reservation was in my husband's name and he had to be the one checking in. My husband wasn't with me at the time because he was staying with the car on the street since there wasn't a designated place to park for new arrivals, which was also annoying. Our third floor room (no elevator) was small - all bed. The shower was good though. The day we checked out, we went to another place down the street for breakfast and when we came back to our room, at 9:00AM, housekeeping had stripped the bed and taken all the towels, but no one was in the room. Check out time was 11:00AM. When we checked out about 5 minutes later (since it seemed we had to), we told reception about it and the person seemed very defensive about our experience, like it was our fault for leaving the room with our suitcases to put in the car, and then having the nerve to return to the room two hours before checkout time. How did they know we were gone and why did they think we were gone for good? Strange. We have family in the area and will be returning to Wilmington, but we won't be staying again at the Arrive."

"We stayed for 4 nights at Arrive Wilmington to celebrate our granddaughter's 21st birthday. Great location in the historic downtown district, charming courtyard, fire-pits, restaurant, cute gazebo bar, friendly staff. But I came away with feeling like it's rather money grubbing. Refrigerator full of trendy non alcohol drinks, lots of junk food, all with inflated prices. No coffee maker and no coffee in the lobby unless the restaurant is not open in the morning (one morning out of 4).No valet parking, so toting luggage down stairs from the paid parking lot. Our room was a "suite" but actually smaller than a King room. I guess it depends on what one expects in a supposed high-end hotel."

"On the positive side the staff is very friendly and helpful. This hotel is in a very good location with easy access to a lot of downtown restaurants, stores, etc. The courtyard is very nice and affords you the opportunity to unwind and relax. The rooms were clean as well. These are some things to consider before you book a room here. There is no elevator so we had to drag our luggage upstairs to the room. There is no onsite parking. There is limited parking across the street. The registration is awkward as you may have to park illegally to register. My bill contained a $15.00 destination fee charge per night ($45.00 total) which "Includes 10% off F&B and a Welcome Drink, a discount to local fitness, and also a reduction of Pet Fee to $50+ Tax." We did not use any of this, so we felt like we were just charged by the hotel as a way to generate more revenue. If you are paying $300 per night for a room, it seems like you would not be charged for something like this. I can understand it if you use it, but not being given the option to decline it is beyond disappointing."
