PB hotel design editorial

Planted at the intersection of High Street and Buttles Avenue in Columbus's Short North Arts District, a cream-paneled ten-story tower announces itself less through architecture than through the full-height mural wrapped around its eastern facade — a swirl of blue botanicals and figures that sets the tone for Graduate Columbus before you walk through the door. Opened in 2021 and designed by architecture firm Model Group, the 197-room property commits fully to the Graduate Hotels formula of place-specific collegiate nostalgia, here channeled through the lens of Ohio State University and the broader mythology of the Buckeye State. The interiors, handled by Graduate's in-house creative team under Roman and Williams co-founder Robin Standefer, layer scarlet plaid wallcovering against exposed concrete ceilings and dark-stained oak floors, Ohio state flag throws draped across upholstered leather headboards, and framed astronaut portraiture nodding to John Glenn's Columbus origins. The ground-floor bar runs a long curved oak counter beneath a ceiling covered in hand-drawn comic-strip illustration — a register closer to a student union than a hotel lobby bar, furnished with leather-and-chrome stools and terrazzo café tables. The restaurant beyond shifts mood with exposed brick walls, a checkerboard tile floor in charcoal and white, oversized red wing chairs, and a chandelier fashioned from clustered brass instruments — marching band iconography treated as fine art object. Earnest without being naive, the whole effect lands somewhere between campus archive and art installation.

"Best value for a hotel if you are visiting Ohio State University or the Short North. Rooms were comfortable with wonderful bedding and a mini fridge with free bottled water! There was in room coffee and plenty of room to unpack our bags. Decor is a little hokey but we were able to ignore it thanks to the amazing service and comfortable accommodations."

"This is a fun hotel that is centrally located to many restaurants, bars, coffee shops, bakery, brewery and shops. The room keys are designed as student ID’s which is so cute. This hotel is good for families and people visiting Columbus for an Ohio State University event. However, if you are looking for classy and romantic, then look for other more mature and less eccentric options. Rooms are a tad small."

"Nothing special about this hotel. I think the quality has gone down since Hilton took over in 2024. The Ohio State motif feels forced. Uncomfortable common area and cramped room. The bar is dirty and cheap looking. It’s the only place to eat. Staff is not inviting. Lots of better places to stay in Short North. Also, the rooftop shown in the photo is not available. Very misleading."

"I've always wanted to check out one of the Graduate hotels. We were in Columbus to attend a show at the Schottenstein Center, and I wanted to stay at a nice hotel near the Short North. The location of the Graduate may be it's best feature if that is where you want to stay. It's right in the middle of Short North, and you can easily walk around the area. I felt safe there, and the valet parking cost is comparable to a nearby garage, but you get in-and-out privileges with the valet. The hotel itself is older, but the decor and theme is cool for an Ohio State fan like myself. My wife also appreciated the charm. Our main detraction was that coffee was not offered in the lobby in the morning. I can't remember a hotel where that wasn't the case. There is a restaurant attached to the building that is open for coffee and breakfast, but it's not included in the room rate. I can understand breakfast not being included, but no coffee (not including the instant coffee pouches in the room) is surprising, especially for a Hilton brand. We went to a local place for coffee and breakfast instead. I'm glad I got to finally experience this hotel. I might go back, or try to stay at the Hampton Inn a few blocks down the street where I know what I'm getting."
