PB hotel design editorial

Few skyscrapers in the American Midwest carry the symbolic weight of the LeVeque Tower. Completed in 1927 to designs by C. Howard Crane and his associate Kenneth Franzheim, the 47-story Gothic-Art Deco shaft dominated the Columbus skyline for decades and remains one of the most ornate towers of its era anywhere in the country — its limestone crown, copper-patinated turrets, and carved stone eagles visible from nearly every approach to downtown. Hotel LeVeque, which arrived in 2017 when Autograph Collection converted the building's lower floors into a 148-room hotel, had the considerable task of translating that architectural gravity into livable interiors without either smothering it in nostalgia or ignoring it entirely. The lobby answers that challenge with confidence: original Rosso Levanto marble columns, deep burgundy and white-veined, anchor a double-height atrium where a branching brass chandelier introduces a contemporary geometry against restored Art Deco grillework balustrades. Guest rooms take a lighter touch — charcoal velvet headboards, satin-gold baroque mirror frames, mustard shell chairs, and sputnik-style ceiling fixtures in chrome create a dialogue between thirties glamour and mid-century wit, zebra-print cushions supplying just enough irreverence to keep the rooms from tipping into period pastiche. The restaurant, by contrast, strips back to raw plaster walls, reclaimed timber, and riveted steel counter surfaces — a rougher, more industrial register that lets the tower's bones speak without ornament.

"I booked this hotel for a quick weekend road trip mainly due to it's proximity to the Nationwide Arena. The architecture and interior decor is super cool. I'm seriously not a fan of the barn door bathroom divider, but our room layout was such that you walked down a back hall to the bathroom and also had a separate toilet room. And it's so nice to have a walk-in shower that actually contains all the water in the shower. The staff here was so nice to us. Everyone was friendly and talkative whenever we met up with them across the building. We happened to be in the elevator with Jackie while she was on the phone. She was super fun and gave us a few secrets about getting around the hotel quicker. Jess was great to chat with in the restaurant and offered some awesome recs for breakfast. The food in The Keep was delish!! The only actual problem was my mobile key didn't work for the elevator. I only waited a few moments for Brent to hook me up with another physical key and I was good to go. He was so outstandingly nice, taking several moments of what was likely his break time to get food, to chat with us as he knew the area we lived. If I return to Columbus I'll definitely stay here again."

"All the front desk staff were amazingly helpful and welcoming. Several times I needed assistance and they were friendly and accommodating. Each time I came in or left I was greeted with a smile and salutation. The room was spacious and spotless and housekeeping was wonderful. Warm and wonderful!"

"This hotel is nothing short of five star! Every single staff member was courteous, helpful, and professional. Our room was beautiful, as was the lobby, and the overhead music played continually in the lobby was awesome as well. We loved checking in on Friday to the live music in the lobby and complementary Prosecco. Sehmar at check in was so welcoming, and a gentleman always went to the elevator to get us our elevator, which was a very kind gesture. Brent who helped us at checkout was charming and personable and so thoughtful and helpful! Each staff member made us feel like we were appreciated guests. The location is great and you can walk or easily. Uber to all the great restaurants in German Village or the Short North. A Starbucks in the lobby is convenient and the food at the keep very good. Overall, an incredible ambience and outstanding staff made for a very memorable experience!"

"Step into a little throwback from the 20s at this special hotel. The accommodations are lovely, the staff is wonderful and the restaurant is great. Semhar at the front desk was super helpful, even bringing my food delivery up to my room for me. On Friday afternoons, they have live music and free champagne to go with it. When you’re ready to retire for the evening, enjoy a starry projection on the ceiling. All these little touches add up to a great stay. I’ve stayed here before and I’ll be back again."

"I had an absolutely lovely and cosmic experience! The staff were excellent, the food was fantastic with great service from Eldorado, and the beds were so comfortable. I stayed in a King room, and it’s definitely the best luxury hotel in Columbus!"
