PB hotel design editorial

When Charles Colcord commissioned his namesake office tower in downtown Oklahoma City in 1910, he was building the tallest structure in the state — a ten-story Beaux-Arts block clad in cream-colored brick and terra cotta that announced the young city's ambitions with considerable force. That building, now operating as the Colcord Hotel, carries its century-old bones with evident pride: the ornamental cast-iron canopy visible at street level, with its coffered soffit and scrollwork frieze, remains one of the most architecturally composed hotel entrances in the American Southwest. The 108-room conversion brought the tower into hospitality use, preserving the facade's classical proportions while reworking the interiors to a palette that sits comfortably between period reverence and contemporary ease. Guest rooms are fitted with tall button-tufted leather headboards — some in charcoal, others in caramel diamond-quilted upholstery — against backgrounds of warm white and soft grey, the furnishings running to dark-stained wood nightstands with brass hardware and sheer linen drapery that softens the original windows. The ground-floor bar and restaurant spaces make their strongest design statement overhead: pressed-metal ceiling tiles painted a deep graphite run the full length of both rooms, playing against veined white marble bar surrounds, warm walnut millwork, and saddle-leather counter stools. Large-format artworks and ring pendant lighting complete a room that feels closer to a well-considered urban brasserie than a hotel dining annex.

"The Colcord is really nice and reasonably priced. Our Deluxe King room was spacious and comfortable and had a real bathroom door. There was a refrigerator and a nice little pod-based espresso machine (think Nespresso) . There is no microwave in the room, but when I called down to ask if there was one around they sent one up to the room. Breakfast at Flint (the onsite restaurant) was very good but don’t book your room with the breakfast option. I did, thinking it might be cheaper or more convenient than paying at the restaurant. It was actually a bit of a hassle and I ended up spending more than if I’d just paid at the restaurant. The staff was friendly and professional and the location is really convenient with a streetcar stop across the street. Our only issue was a mistake on the bill which they fixed when I called about it the next day."

"We stayed at this hotel during a recent trip to Oklahoma. The hotel is centrally located in Oklahoma City, overlooking the beatiful Myriad Gardens - wish we had the time to visit. It's a beautifully restored building from the glorified oil days of the city. Check in was easy and friendly. The room was just fine, clean, and amenities are good. Valets directed my husband to the nearby garage for parking."

"This hotel is conveniently located near the Paycom Center, Myriad Botanical Gardens, Bricktown, and other downtown OKC locations. The well-decorated rooms were clean and comfortable, and the Flint Restaurant was a nice breakfast option. Valet parking works smoothly."

"My wife and I stopped for a couple of days in OKC on our way to Texas and every part of our stay at the Colcord was five stars. From the time we walked in the hotel staff was friendly and we noticed how nice the hotel was. The front desk staff was helpful, especially Hailey. They were able to provide some recommendations on places to eat nearby. Once we got to our room we were very pleased with the size and cleanliness of the room. We stayed in a corner king room and were surprised by the size of the room. The room was well equipped as well. We used our Nespresso machine both days the room was also equipped with a stocked mini refrigerator. We had drinks at the hotel bar and the bartender was both friendly and very knowledgeable about the drinks. There is a great selection of bourbon at the bar and a nice list of cocktails, but you can’t go wrong with their Old Fashioned. The gentleman working for the valet service were very friendly when we were coming and going, but we elected to self park. There is a nice parking garage across the street that only charges $10 nightly, but if you prefer to take advantage of the valet service I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. Overall, this hotel was a great value for the cost and is easily a five out of five. If we travel through OKC again we will definitely be staying at the Colcord again."

"A beautiful hotel, charming staff and a well appointed room - but I can’t give it 5 stars because the WiFi in our room was so bad! That may sound trivial but as an overseas traveller I was reliant on WiFi rather than mobile data and I had to leave my room to go down the corridor or even down to the lobby to access the internet on phone or iPad."
