PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1929 at the height of Tulsa's oil boom, the red brick and terracotta-trimmed building that houses the Ambassador Hotel Tulsa carries the civic confidence of a city that briefly believed it might become the wealthiest in America. The seven-story structure, designed in a Renaissance Revival manner with elaborate carved stone cartouches flanking the arched entrance portal and rope-twist columns framing the porte-cochère, was conceived as a monument to that ambition. Now part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, the property holds 55 rooms and was restored with enough fidelity to its origins that the lobby's original carved limestone fireplace surround and plasterwork cornice detailing survive intact — anchoring a seating arrangement of curved amber velvet sofas and a tiered crystal chandelier that draws a clear line between 1929 and now without pretending the intervening decades didn't happen. The guest rooms settle into a palette of charcoal, warm gold, and deep blue — channel-tufted ivory headboards rising against slate-grey walls, geometric-patterned carpets in the same restrained register, lacquered ebony nightstands paired with brass-based lamps. The bar is the room that commits most fully to atmosphere: a white marble counter running the length of the space, mercury-glass pendant lanterns suspended on brass fittings, amber velvet bar stools, and a mirrored back bar framed by a gilded arch that nods unmistakably to the building's Jazz Age origins while keeping the lighting low enough that you forget entirely what decade you're in.

"What an absolutely wonderful hotel! Marriott Lifetime Platinum picky traveler here. Just spent 3 nights at this gem in Tulsa- a treasure trove of Art Deco architecture (who knew!). Special thanks to Michelle, Tyler, Judy and Ethan, who made the visit feel as though we were coming home. Rooms are beautiful, sparkling clean, relaxing, just plain warm and fuzzy- no modern, stark, cold rooms that are so prevalent today. The Chalkboard restaurant was terrific. Great location just enough off the beaten path to be quiet and exclusive. Free parking. 1 minute to the middle of downtown. I’ve traveled the world and this one’s in my top 10. Bravo Ambassador!"

"The bed is so comfortable that I don’t want to get up in the morning!! The hotel is beautiful and upscale, but the atmosphere feels like home. What sets this hotel apart from the others are the people! At the front desk Mirandah, Tyler, Anna and Jake are always welcoming, leaving hand written welcome notes and lavender sachets. Marlon in the bar is like family and he makes amazing drinks!! The management Michelle and Brad are amazing too!! This is absolutely the nicest hotel in Tulsa!!! I highly recommend. Being Marriott Ambassador status, I stay in hotels more than I’m at home and The Ambassador is my favorite!!!"

"I recently stayed in the Ambassador Tulsa during the snowstorm. The staff were all so amazing! The rooms were plush and very nicely appointed. Chalkboard Restaurant had such an inviting atmosphere and very appealing menu items. Old world charm and luxury exuded from every inch of this historic gem in downtown Tulsa."

"Location is a little out of the way. Front desk staff were friendly and professional. Room was a disappointment. The building is clearly very old and the rooms have been renovated but it’s like the expression “lipstick on a pig” its pretty at first glance, like in the photos but once your in there, it has a more “motel” feel. Very disappointing for an autograph property. They bed is right beside the door, the bathroom is tiny and the closet they just took the sliding doors off and painted over the door tracks. Windows have zero sound proofing, you can hear traffic racing by on the highway and the garbage bins outside were emptied at 5am."

"Stayed here for a birthday getaway when our original plans in another location fell through. Can't say enough nice things about the Ambassador. The staff from Michelle and Ashley at the front desk to Callille who drove our shuttle to Natalie the bartender were all terrific! Just what you'd hope for in a high end property. Kind, helpful, welcoming and seemed happy in their work. Didn't know the hotel offered shuttle service, which made our evening so much more fun and worry free. All the amenities in the room were fun. Loved the vintage looking postcard of the hotel. HIGHLY recommend."
