PB hotel design editorial

Oregon's only Relais & Châteaux property is housed not in a vineyard estate or coastal retreat but in a century-old hardware store on a working downtown street in McMinnville's wine country. The Taylor Dale building, restored by MAP Architecture and reimagined by Hacker Architects with design direction from Carolyn Richardson, gave the Tributary Hotel & Spa its essential character before a single piece of furniture arrived: exposed red brick walls, heavy timber ceiling beams, and wide-plank fir floors that carry the patina of a hundred years of commercial use. Richardson's interiors work with this rather than against it, furnishing the second-floor suites in warm caramel leathers, linen upholstery, and hand-woven textile wall pieces that feel closer to a serious private home than a boutique hotel fitout. The eight suites, each named for an Oregon river, hold their proportions with ease — generous king beds with upholstered frames sit against raw brick walls, rounded oak side tables and cylindrical ceramic lamps softening the industrial bones of the shell. Downstairs, the bar area is darker and more enveloping, with tufted cognac leather banquette seating, rough-hewn timber posts, and a floor-to-ceiling wine display framed in warm wood. The restaurant space is deliberately spare: bleached oak chairs of Scandinavian lineage arranged around simple rectangular tables, with an open kitchen finished in deep navy at the room's heart, the live fire visible from every seat.

"Dear Sweet Tributary Staff. Your energy and attentiveness was truly wonderful. You came so close to scoring a 5 star review. Indeed, we gave three opportunities. As you know we loved the first night, turn-down cookies. We loved them so much we decided to forgo dessert at our restaurant on night 2 to save room. When we asked, the receptionist told us with a smile - No, sorry, those are just for the first night. Being persistent, and cookie - craving we gave you two more chances to fulfill our craving - but, alas, the one-night only cookie policy was worth more than charming us meeting our simple request. Sigh."

"Incredible staff at a great hotel. The team could not have been more helpful setting up winery tours and restaurant reservations for our four day stay. Everything interaction with the entire staff was pleasant. Great location right in town for evening meals and convenient to numerous wineries. Breakfast and the spa were also phenomenal."

Brianna helped to curate our wine country experience and helped to ensure it was an unforgettable experience. She is a truly wonderful human. We cannot recommend this hotel enough. We will be coming back many more times in the future."

"What a lovely stay from start to finish. All the staff at this beautiful boutique hotel were extremely accommodating and friendly. We have stayed at many Relais & Chateaux establishments around the world and the service at the Tributary Hotel is worthy of the rating. The attention to detail and all the local snacks they provided were very much appreciated. We loved the convenience of this hotel to everything walkable in McMinnville. The breakfast that was served each morning in our room was delicious and so creative. We did not head out for our day hungry. Our room was spacious with a gorgeous spa like bathroom, cozy fireplace, and very comfortable bed. We stayed in the Willamette Suite with a great view of the town. We would ask to stay in this suite again. We highly recommend dining at their restaurant, Okta. It was really a highlight of our trip. We loved how you could pick from a variety of options for each course and each course was absolutely amazing. The open kitchen was engaging and the staff was 5 Star all the way. We wanted to thank the chef of the evening for accommodating my food allergy. They didn't miss a beat! Thank you for our memorable stay!"

"A hidden jewel in McMinnville! What a spectacular hotel. The quality of the rooms are only outdone by the quality of the hotel team members. One of the finest hotel experiences we have had, the Tributary Hotel can compete with the major hotels of the world. This was our 2nd stay here and we are looking forwad to our next stay already. I would travel to McMinnville just to get to experience The Tributary Hotel."
