PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Southwest Broadway and Stark Street, where Portland's South Park Blocks give way to the city's retail core, a nine-story brick-and-limestone Commercial Style building from 1909 has carried several identities over the past century. Its current incarnation as Hotel Lucia, refreshed under the ownership of Provenance Hotels, draws on that layered history while asserting a personality shaped largely by the late photojournalist David Kennerly, whose vast archive of black-and-white images lines the corridors and public spaces. The lobby telegraphs this curatorial ambition immediately: a tufted cognac leather bench anchors a room where mustard-yellow high-backed wing chairs cluster beneath a Sputnik-style chandelier, the reception desk finished in veined white marble, bronze-patinated wall panels absorbing the warm light from pendant fixtures. The 127 guestrooms translate that eclecticism into a mid-century register — walnut-paneled headboards, saffron-and-chocolate drapery in a geometric lattice print, globe-shaped reading lamps, and yellow leather ottomans that carry the lobby palette upstairs without forcing the connection. The ground-floor restaurant, visible in the images, strips the building back to its bones: exposed red brick, raw concrete columns, and overhead ductwork provide the industrial counterweight to the rooms' warmer, more composed atmosphere, the long marble bar and mustard banquette seating bridging the two registers. It is a hotel that has decided its accumulated history is more interesting than any single design statement — and largely proves the point.

Hotel Lucia Reviews

"Location was fine. Our room wasn't ready for us although we arrived 45 minutes AFTER check-in time. The hot water went out on our third morning there. They fixed it relatively quickly but we had to leave to catch a flight so no shower for us. "Happy Hour" is just complimentary beer, no wine for those who aren't beer drinkers. Would be a good idea if they had a few bottles of wine behind the bar as well. Seems like that would be a no-brainer to me. Room and hotel were clean. We were on the 5th floor and it was quiet. A/C worked well. Staff was pleasant and professional."

"As a photojournalist, the Hotel Lucia is one of my fave hotels anywhere! I love the vibe, the cameras in the lobby and the incredible David Hume Kennerly prints throughout the hotel. Even in the bathroom! Staff is friendly and unpretentious and the value is good for the amenities and the location. I just wish they'd do away with that resort fee. Maybe just build it into the room price? I highly recommend a stay here!"

"Great hotel, comfortable room, very friendly and helpful staff. Unfortunately downtown is not the best neighborhood at the moment."

"Located in downtown Portland Hotel Lucia is easily walkable to many locations. Within minutes you can go from the lobby to the waterfront or shopping at the Muji store. The atmosphere is very welcoming as all the staff are incredibly helpful. The vibe of the hotel is welcoming. The decor is pretty comfortable and homey so you feel like you are entering a hotel with a bit of personality. I thought the room size was adequate considering the amount of guest and what we paid. The bed was comfortable and everything was clean. Only issue with noise is that you can sometimes hear someone flush the toilet on another level. Other than that it was a quiet and relaxing place to stay."
