PB hotel design editorial

Carved from the 1912 Elks Temple on Southwest 11th Avenue — its Beaux-Arts facade of rusticated stone, paired pilasters, and medallion reliefs still legible in the image above — the Sentinel sits inside one of Portland's most architecturally assured Edwardian civic buildings, a structure that spent decades as a fraternal lodge before Provenance Hotels transformed it into a 100-room property in 2014. The conversion preserved the building's monumental street presence while threading contemporary hospitality through its upper floors, a balance that few adaptive reuse projects in the Pacific Northwest have managed as cleanly. The interiors, developed under Provenance's in-house design approach, work in deep forest greens and warm taupes — tall wingback headboards upholstered in natural linen, herringbone-patterned carpets in charcoal and stone, X-frame ottomans in blackened steel sitting at the foot of each bed. Framed pop-art prints add an unexpected irreverence against the saturated walls. The ground-floor bar pulls reclaimed timber into a chevron wall pattern behind a granite fireplace, paired with slate-blue tub chairs and a well-stocked back bar that leans into Pacific Northwest whisky culture. A wine bar fitted with wine-crate cladding and quartz tasting counters extends the property's food and beverage ambitions beyond the expected. Together these spaces have the atmosphere of a private club that has quietly relaxed its dress code.

"This was the perfect hotel for out of town guests for our son’s wedding. The beauty of this hotel made everyone feel special and welcoming. Every room was beautifully designed. The restaurant and bars were all accommodating to our large guest party. It’s in the perfect location for walking to Portland’s historic sites."

"The Sentinel never disappoints. Walking distance to art offerings, shopping and of course, Powell's. We booked a room with a rooftop balcony which turned out to be a night where fireworks were celebrating the Burnside bridge. We could see it from our room!"

"From the lobby to the guest room hallways, the property is beautifully decorated and a welcoming. The scent in the lobby itself is intoxicating and makes you want to sink into the leather sofas and relax immediately. We stayed in the fire pit terrace room and made use of the terrace nightly - it was fantastic. The hotel was quiet and peaceful and the amenities afforded us with our room made my wife and I feel special - like members of an elite club. Everyone we met on the staff, from the front desk, to valets, were kind and helpful. A great hotel, in one of the nicer parts of downtown. It was very convenient having both a great restaurant and bar onsite but there are quite a few fun spots within just a few blocks for when you want some variety. We would absolutely stay here again, without hesitation."

"This was my first stay at the Sentinel. I generally stay in Portland approx 6 times per year for a mix of business/family at a different hotel, but this popped up on my Amex Hotel Fine Hotels, so I decided to give it a try. First off, Outstanding Customer Service for start to finish. For an older historic property, the rooms are quiet, comfortable with nice amenities. The hotel has a very warm and comfortable atmosphere. This will be my new first choice accommodation in Portland."
