PB hotel design editorial

Sharing a block with the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Southwest Broadway, a ten-storey brick tower completed in 1927 has anchored Portland's cultural district through nearly a century of civic change. The Heathman Hotel fills that building with a lobby that earns its standing — original walnut paneling lines the walls of the two-storey library lounge, a rolling library ladder tracking across floor-to-ceiling shelves stocked with thousands of volumes, a crystal chandelier suspended above a fireplace grouping arranged around a blue-and-white patterned sofa and a herringbone stone floor. Contemporary paintings hang within the arched recesses, placing present-day Portland artists directly in conversation with the room's Edwardian bones. The 150 guestrooms, renovated in recent years, carry a palette of warm grey and cream punctuated by cobalt blue — damask-patterned rugs, paneled white headboards, tan leather lounge chairs with slender brass-accented legs, and framed prints of Portland landmarks including the St. Johns Bridge lending each room a quiet civic identity rather than generic hotel neutrality. The restaurant, which has long attracted serious local attention, exposes the building's original concrete columns within a space dressed in dark embossed ceiling tiles, wide-plank oak floors, black steel shelving behind the bar, and globe pendant lighting — a combination that manages industrial warmth without straining for it. Taken whole, the property makes a case that genuine architectural heritage, carefully tended, is more persuasive than any designed-from-scratch concept hotel.

"The Heathman Lodge location is about 15 minutes from the Vancouver Waterfront and opposite 15 minutes from the Portland Airport. The lodge rooms are a little older but very comfortable and clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel lobby is busy on weekends as the lodge doubles as event space with company Christmas parties and a wedding reception. The attached Hudson’s restaurant is good with happy hour from 4-6 as an obvious local choice. The happy hour drink and food specials are reasonably priced and good enough. The reason for 4/5 is based on the restaurant. It’s good food and drinks but for very similar prices there are better tasting and prepared options on the waterfront. If you are looking for an all inclusive option to not have to leave for a stay and meals Heathman Lodge is a solid choice."

"Warm, rustic, true lodge feel. So many Native American and western artifacts with decor that carries out that theme, down to the sound of birds chirping in the hallway! We had a very spacious suite complete with gas fireplace in the living room and a soaking tub in the bathroom. Very comfortable king size bed with perfect pillows. Two sinks with huge mirrors! Salmon served at our private party was delicious! And breakfast in the restaurant was excellent. Our server was a hoot and took such good care of us. Other staff in the restaurant were exceptionally attentive and helpful, too. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend."

"The hotel is very lovely, very clean, and the staff were nice. We had a planned event though and I thought we could check in by 3:00 to start getting ready but, I ended up being late for my event because I could not access the room to get ready until 4:00. So make sure you check on check in times. The water pressure was very low in the shower but the water warmed up quickly nice and hot, and the AC doesn't come on unless you open the blinds or something weird FYI for when you sleep at night if you sleep warm. Only some of the electrical charging units for vehicles work at the hotel and they were a bit out if you are handicapped you might need to do a drop off then park. The area felt safe and it's a very cute lodge. The restaurant Hudsons was so delicious, I highly recommend the Sunday brunch! I'll dream of that Fiocchi Pasta Cheese and Pear Filled Pasta Sachets, Caramelized Pears, Cranberries, Hazelnuts, & Brown Butter Blue Cheese Sauce.. with added salmon, Forever!!"

"We were looking for a place to stay outside of Portland for our final night of our Oregon road trip and decided on the Heathman Lodge. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and design, particularly the great fireplace in the restaurant and Koi pool at the entrance. Our suite was a late 1990s time capsule. In theory, this could have been charming! A whirlpool, slightly yellowed from years of service yet clean, has character. But the rather dark room with wallpaper peeling off? And cleanliness appears to be hit or miss, as we found a piece of bacon on the floor left by a former guest! Bar serves decent cocktails. If you don't want to eat in, there are some dining options within walking distance and plenty more within a short drive. Bottom line: The Heathman Lodge has potential with its vintage character, but inconsistent housekeeping standards make it hard to recommend at this point. The public spaces have nice patina, but room quality seems variable."

"I love the Heathman Lodge and stay there every time I travel to the Vancouver area. The staff are always friendly; the hotel lobby and rooms are always spotless; and the food at Hudson‘s restaurant is great, exceeded only by the warmth and friendliness of the staff. And I can’t forget to mention the bird song that is piped into the hallways. What a great touch!"
