PB hotel design editorial

Thirteen floors of curtain-wall glass rising above the South Park Blocks in downtown Portland, the building that houses The Porter Portland presents a face that is firmly of its era — the floor-to-ceiling glazing, cantilevered metal cornice, and dark aluminum grid belong to the mid-2000s commercial vocabulary that Ankrom Moisan brought to the project when it opened in 2011. From the street, the tower sits lightly against its brick-and-mortar neighbors, the glazed skin shifting color with the Pacific Northwest light in a way that keeps the massing from feeling monolithic. Inside, two distinct registers compete for attention. The 327 guestrooms work in a palette of dark-stained walnut, leather-upholstered headboards set against full-height wood feature walls, grasscloth wallcovering, and patterned carpet in tonal grays — restrained and well-resolved, if not especially adventurous. The rooftop bar operates at a completely different frequency: hundreds of drum pendant shades suspended in a continuous canopy that shifts through the full spectrum from crimson to lime, the colored light pooling across red mosaic tile floors and a glowing illuminated bar counter, with floor-to-ceiling glazing framing Portland's hills beyond. The restaurant at grade-level counters that theatrics with reclaimed-timber ceilings, dark brick, a green crocodile-embossed host stand, and walls hung salon-style with oil portraits of farm animals — a willfully eccentric note that anchors the Porter firmly in the Pacific Northwest's appetite for the irreverent.

The Porter Portland, Curio Collection by Hilton Reviews

"We have been traveling for about three weeks and ended our vacation in Portland at the Porter. We often stay at Hiltons because of the incredible service and amenities. Not so much on this trip. It started with pulling up to the valet yesterday where the attendant seemed a bit confused about why we were parking at the hotel because if the high rate for overnight parking. We grabbed our bags and asked if there were any porters to assist with luggage. He said they didn’t do that. Ok cool, we got it. We have no issues with taking our luggage, we just had a lot of it. The front desk personnel also seemed a bit aloof. Not much help to get our Hilton Honors points added. Limited access to good food at the location although the rooftop bartender (Tavis) was super kind and welcoming. Gave some recommendations to local eateries and the other staff upstairs were kind. We are from California and kindness and hospitality is important to us. Next morning staff at desk were busy on cell phones and not interested in saying hello or engaging. Not sure what the issue is as the reviews from others have been really good and had an impact on why we picked this location. Hoping feedback will be given to the staff and that others have a much better stay."

"This was a very nice hotel in a great location, within easy walking distance to public transportation to get around Portland. We went during the Rose Festival and it was a super busy time. Every employee was kind and helpful. Rooms were an ok size and it was clean and well-kept. We will be back."

"What a great hotel! I'm sad we couldn't stay more than one night. After so many flight delays, we finally rolled in just before midnight. The valets were amazing! So helpful and full of energy (Mason and Derek). We were all tired and they made the drop off a breeze. The night staff at the front desk was super friendly and helpful too. The rooms were in great condition and everything was very clean. Next time we're in Portland, we will definitely stay here again."
