PB hotel design editorial

Deep in the Allegheny National Forest of northwestern Pennsylvania, a private family compound built by Clayton Dorn in 1929 became one of America's most singular small retreats without ever quite intending to. The Lodge at Glendorn passed through three generations of the Dorn family before opening to guests in 1995, and the compound's origins as a personal wilderness sanctuary — rather than a purpose-built hotel — remain the defining fact of every space within it. The main log structure, with its steeply pitched shingle roof, rounded-log exterior walls, and fieldstone chimney masses, carries the confident rusticity of Adirondack Great Camp architecture, a tradition that prized the appearance of wilderness living at a comfortable remove from its actual hardships. Inside, that sensibility holds across the guest cabins and lodge rooms alike. Exposed Douglas fir beams span cathedral ceilings above brick fireplaces with arched surrounds; plaid upholstered armchairs cluster around wood-insert stoves stacked with split logs; red-and-cream floral draperies frame leaded casement windows looking into the forest canopy. The dining room deploys damask wingback chairs beneath a wrought-iron chandelier against a monumental coursed-sandstone fireplace — the effect somewhere between an English country house library and a fishing lodge, which is roughly the tension the property has always navigated with considerable ease. Across the 1,500-acre estate, the thirteen cottage suites and cabins preserve the domestic accumulation of a family that actually lived here: banjo clocks, landscape oils, and objects that no hotel procurement team would ever think to specify.

"This is the second time my husband and I have stayed at the Glendorn and we’re never disappointed. It’s refined and elegant rustic style is reminiscent of the great Adirondack Camps of the early twentieth century. All of the amenities are luxurious and the staff are friendly and extremely responsive. Wood-burning fireplaces are well stocked with wood and snowshoes were available to us for a quiet hike on the snow covered property. We had fabulous massages by an expert licensed therapist and I even enjoyed a cooking class with the head chef. If you are looking for a relaxing retreat with top notch service and elegant dining this is the place to be!"

"What a marvelous experience. Although the temperature outside was in the single digits, the atmosphere inside was warm and inviting. We stayed in the Green Room Suite and was pleasantly surprised because we had received a complimentary upgrade. There was no issue with cleanliness or noise levels. We found the service by everyone to be top notch and they seemed to go out of their way to be helpful while still being friendly and engaging. This was our second visit to Glendorn and would be happy to make it a yearly experience."

"I'm so sorry to write this rather poor review. As locals, my husband and I had both been to Glendorn to dine years before and enjoyed it. But this year, I wanted to do something special for my birthday, so I asked him to take me to this exclusive resort for lunch. Unfortunately, it didn't match up to previous experiences. Now, my own dish of Caesar salad with white anchovies, along with truffle fries, was quite good. But his burger was quite bad. Our server brought it to the table with apologies for the delay: The chef had to finish it in the oven, she said. My husband himself is a chef and he cringed, for he ordered it medium-rare and juicy. As a result, the dry burger had the texture of overcooked meat loaf. Plus, it was topped with fatty, ill-cooked bacon and a slice of tomato that contained a green core. He used an entire mini-bottle of Heinz ketchup to make it palatable, and is still complaining about it! Guess we won't go there for Christmas dinner after all... On the plus side, the staff we encountered had lovely, courtly manners; we enjoyed the fresh-baked biscuits and excellent Glendorn spring water and were introduced to a marvelous house red which we later sought out at our local state store."

"Our two night stay at the Lodge at Glendorn was one of those very rare travel experiences that left thinking about a return trip next year. The accommodations and the expansive grounds has one pleasant surprise after another. Our stay in The Dorn Suite was a glimpse into an era of elegance among breathtaking beauty in every direction. Dining is another treat. The chef and kitchen staff presented a variety of fine dining options and the service staff seem determined to make your stay one that will be memorable for all the right reasons. We can’t wait to return. A true “six star” destination."

"We found Glendorn to be a welcoming, interesting and beautiful resort with many complimentary activities, a friendly and gracious staff, beautifully appointed accomodations set in the breathtaking beauty of the Allegheny Nation Forest. From start to finish we enjoyed a first rate experience. The accomodations were spacious and charming. The food was delicious and served impecably by the staff in beautiful dining rooms. Every encounter we had with the staff made us feel welcome and appreciated. Terrific activities were available for our use. The flexibility of being able to do these activities on our own schedule was convenient, and also demonstrated the graciousness that characterized our entire experience. During our stay there was swimming in a beautiful heated pool, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, hiking, bicycle boating, bicycle riding and fly fishing, all of which are complimentary. There is also an assortment of guided adventures available as well as a spa with exercise classes. The fitness center was small but adequate; there is also a spacious and luxurious 'playroom' with one of 2 pool tables (the other is in the main lodge) a self serve ice cream bar, popcorn machine and ping pong table. Lawn games (bocci, cornhole and croquet) are provided and are also complimentary. After busy days spent doing activities, we took advantage of the many fireplaces for a chance to read; every room offers a collection of books including the most noteworthy authors in literature."
