PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Walnut Street and South 18th, where Philadelphia's most patrician residential square meets its commercial spine, a fourteen-storey Beaux-Arts tower that began its life as an apartment building in 1924 now carries the AKA Rittenhouse Square brand with considerable architectural authority. The limestone-clad facade, its deep dentil cornice washed gold at night, belongs to a tradition of early-twentieth-century urban residential towers that treated the street as a formal occasion — and the building still does, its rusticated base and paired windows reading as civic rather than commercial against the Rittenhouse neighborhood's genteel scale. Inside, the tension between that ornamented shell and a thoroughly contemporary fit-out defines the experience. The lobby deploys angular black granite columns, backlit blond wood paneling, and a river-pebble plinth beside the reception desk — a spatial vocabulary closer to a contemporary art institution than a period renovation, with purple accent lighting reinforcing the contrast against the building's classical bones. Guest rooms resolve this tension by stepping back from drama entirely: a restrained palette of warm greys, textured wallcovering, and low-platform beds upholstered in charcoal fabric keeps the atmosphere calm and residential, more pied-à-terre than hotel room, which is precisely the extended-stay positioning AKA has built its reputation around. The ground-floor bar, fitted with a burnished copper counter, blackened wood stools, and a coffered ceiling in dark-stained timber, anchors the street-level presence with genuine conviction.

"Staying at AKA Rittenhouse now - great location! Large and modern galley kitchen and large living room with a great L-shaped sofa. Bedroom could use better lights and another dresser, but bed is big and comfortable. Nice views of Rittenhouse square. One area to improve: Bathroom is very small and toilet is low, but bathroom is clean, well lit and well functioning. Really great staff! Very friendly! Weekly cleaning is awesome. Apartment is dog friendly. Common areas are well kept. Attached Restaurant and Bar are really nice too. Best of all - we just love Greg who manages the lobby and all comings and goings of guests/tenants. He is so helpful and so friendly!!"

"Discovered this property when searching for downtown accommodations. Having previously stayed at an aka property in DC I knew we were in for a treat. Bianca greeted us upon check in and was wonderful getting us some extra things for the room as well assisting our late arriving party late that night. The rooms are very spacious for a major city. Wister and Bianca were both great helping us over the weekend when we needed to modify our travel plans. Highly recommend this property for location, space, cleanliness and convenience. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay here on a return trip to Philly."

"I had a truly pleasant stay at this hotel in Philadelphia, which was mainly due to the exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. I would especially like to highlight the porter, Greg. He was consistently incredibly courteous, friendly, and attentive. Whether it was assisting with luggage or simply offering a kind and welcoming presence, Greg truly enhanced my stay. The front desk team also deserves great recognition. Despite some challenges on my end—particularly regarding billing issues, credit card charges, and switching to a corporate credit card—the staff remained patient, professional, and solution-oriented throughout. I would like to give special mention to Juliet, who handled my situation with great care and calmness. Her friendliness and dedication left a lasting positive impression. Overall, outstanding service—many thanks to the entire team!"

"The staff makes this a great place to stay. From the moment we pulled up Greg was on top of our every need and made the arrival a breeze (even stopping traffic so we could make the turn to get to the garage I’d booked). Even before arrival Maria at the desk helped arrange for flowers I’d ordered for my wife to be placed in our room in advance. Great team! Would definitely stay again."
