PB hotel design editorial

At the edge of Washington Square Park, one of Philadelphia's original five public greens, a ten-storey Beaux-Arts tower clad in warm buff brick and elaborate terracotta cornicing has stood since 1907 — originally built as the home of the Provident Life and Trust Company. That civic pedigree gives Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia its structural authority: the broad symmetrical facade, the rusticated base, the gridded fenestration marching upward with the confidence of a building that expected to matter. Converted into 268 guest rooms, the property sits on the boundary between Old City's colonial grid and the financial district, a position that feels earned rather than incidental. Inside, the interiors depart sharply from the Edwardian gravitas of the shell. The guest rooms layer slate-blue Moorish lattice wallcovering against tufted linen headboards, crimson lacquered Chinese-style dressers, and patterned polka-dot bed skirts — a maximalist eclecticism characteristic of Kimpton's house approach to boutique hotel design, which borrows from the language of collected interiors rather than curated restraint. The rooftop bar, fitted with channel-stitched cognac leather banquettes, globe pendant clusters suspended from a steel-framed retractable ceiling, and a marble counter bar that opens onto a terrace screened by boxwood hedging, has a cinematic quality that the street-level brasserie — bentwood café chairs, riveted steel columns, wide-plank floors — deliberately avoids. The two registers coexist without contradiction, which is either a neat trick or a fair reflection of the city itself.

"The Hotel Monaco is a gem. Great location for historical tourism. Hotel itself is extremely well run. Hard to remember better trained staff anywhere - completely missing "attitude". Reception desk is efficient and professional. Rooms are well maintained. Restaurant is well staffed, friendly and attentive."

"I had such a fantastic time in Philadelphia because of the amazing team at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco. Roshid, the Hotel Concierge, made sure that my stay at the hotel and my visit to Philadelphia to celebrate a milestone birthday was going to be memorable and wonderful. They made me feel so special with a welcome gift. I love the Kimpton hotels, and so do my pups, which is why I choose this hotel chain. I have been telling my family and friends about how wonderful my visit to the Hotel Monaco was for celebrating a special occasion. This is the second time I have stayed here with my pups, and they love it too. The staff is so friendly and attentive. The food at the Red Owl was also very good. The hotel location is also very convenient, within walking distance to Old City, Penns Landing, Rittenhouse Square, and the shops along Market Street."

"We booked the trip on Expedia for my nieces birthday and came to celebrate in Philly, when we got here everyone at the front desk was very nice. We are from out of town and wanted to have a good night in the city, my nieces room was great but mine and my wife’s room we found out that the ac was not working, we let the front desk know and they had someone come to look at it. It was indeed broken however they offered to move us but due to us only staying one night and it being late we just declined and they got us a fan to move the air around in the room, they let us know that they would cover our breakfast this morning at their tavern. The breakfast was amazing and we enjoyed it very much. When we went to check out we found out that they would cover our room as well, the staff was very friendly and atmosphere was amazing, one of the mangers Ashley and Shamera were very friendly and understanding. I highly recommend you come to stay if you are ever in the area."

"My experience was fantastic! This was my first time staying at this hotel and it exceeded my expectations. The room was spacious, clean, and had everything I needed. The service from the staff was top of the line. I’d love to stay here again. Roshid was the concierge that assisted me and he was outstanding."
