PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of 17th and Sansom in Philadelphia's Center City, a warm-toned brick tower dating from the mid-twentieth century carries the kind of Art Deco-inflected commercial architecture that the city's Rittenhouse Square corridor does particularly well — solid, ornamental at the entry, restrained above. Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, which took over the building as part of the brand's expansion into the mid-Atlantic market, works with that inherited geometry rather than against it, preserving the chamfered corner and the grid of steel-framed windows while threading a thoroughly contemporary interior through the 230-room, 23-floor structure. The lobby, designed by Cheryl Rowley, sets the tone with a curved velvet sectional edged in brass, cobalt tufted armchairs flanking a white marble fireplace, and dark-stained hardwood floors inlaid with a brass compass motif — the whole room carrying the atmosphere of a well-appointed private club rather than a hotel receiving hall. Gold mosaic tile panels punctuate the columns, picking up the warmth of the building's exterior brick at a different scale. Guestrooms continue the graphic energy through chevron-patterned headboards in mocha velvet and navy-and-gold Greek key bed runners, mirrored side tables catching the light from the original steel-framed windows. The Square 1682 restaurant on the ground floor shifts registers with lacquered red kitchen panels, a dark granite bar, and geometric diamond-pattern wallcovering — a deliberately louder room that holds its own against the lobby's more considered restraint.

"The Kimpton Palomar provided a wonderful experience with exceptional service from check in to check out. The front desk is welcoming, the lobby is lovely, the valet staff is friendly and efficient and the housekeepers are excellent. The restaurant, Square 1682, is wonderful. The chef has created a great menu with impeccably prepared tasty dishes perfectly presented. The restaurant staff is exceptional. You will not find a more welcoming and friendly hostess than the lovely and vivacious Tauna who makes everyone feel like family. Sonya-Kay, our server, was kind, attentive and professional in all of our visits to Square 1682. The Kimpton Palomar is centrally located, nicely appointed and impeccably staffed."

"We arrived for our daughter’s dissertation defense for two nights. The hotel is situated at a very busy intersection so the parking attendants are quick to take your car. So quick, we neglected to get all our items out of the car before they whisked it away. They happily returned the car to us to get our items. Check in went smoothly and we were assigned the 22nd floor. Beds were comfortable. Slight carpet tear in front of door and shade on window was torn. Replacement of towels the next morning was appreciated. Our first night went fine. Our second night we noticed the ac was not working. We called ( phone in room not working ) from the hallway at 830pm. We were given the option of moving or having engineer come to fix ac. We chose to have a visit from the engineer. He”fixed it” and the room started to cool. At 12:30am it was 77degrees and we called again. Engineer was no longer available and we were given the option of moving ( nothing on our floor) and since we were all in bed , we opted to wait for the engineer to arrive at 7:15am. The room reached 79 degrees. ( surprised there was not an “on call” engineer). He arrived and the ac was “fixed “ again. We got ready to leave and checked out. Our compensation offerings were points , (not interested ) or two nights of parking fee. Manager was “in a meeting” as I truly felt we should have been compensated for our night of incomplete sleep. This was our first experience at a Kimpton and I think we will hesitate to book one again. Btw They also have a very cute program in the lobby to send postcards ( provided ) while you are there ( they post them themselves ) No one has received ours yet :("
