PB hotel design editorial

The Packard Building, a 1924 Beaux-Arts tower at 111 South 15th Street in Philadelphia's Center City, carries its original identity with unusual confidence — the gilded bronze tympanum above the entrance arch and the carved limestone cartouche higher on the facade were preserved through the adaptive conversion that brought ROOST Midtown into being in 2014. Designed originally by Ritter & Shay, the building's ornamental program was substantial enough that the hotel's designers, Studio Tack, chose to work in deliberate counterpoint rather than continuation: original plasterwork coffering and deep octagonal ceiling medallions survive intact in the suites, set against contemporary upholstered furniture in muted grey velvet, herringbone oak floors, and a fireplace surround in honed slate. The lobby threads the same negotiation — coffered ceilings with their original egg-and-dart molding retained above a reception desk finished in patinated metal, a Persian rug anchoring a seating arrangement of velvet sofas and a Ligne Roset-adjacent low table, the whole lit by a bare-bulb chandelier that tips the room toward residential rather than institutional. Guest rooms take the restraint further: white walls, light oak floors, sage-green nightstands, and large-format landscape photography that gives the spaces a calm, apartment-like quality. The rooftop terrace, spare by comparison, opens onto an unobstructed view of Center City's midrise skyline — a quietly earned payoff for a building that earns its keep mostly through architectural pedigree.

"And nothing you don’t! We’ve been using Airbnb on our trips to Philly for the past 10 years but the inconsistency and lack of reliability left us reconsidering a hotel stay this time. Fortunately in the hours I spent online searching for a better alternative, we discovered Roost. The one bedroom apartment was like staying at a friend’s place while they were out of town—only the friend is the most compulsively neat and thoughtful person in your entire friend group! The staff on duty (Mina, Paul, Maria and Gladys—as well as the overall manager—Mr Gallagher?) apparently really care about how their guests are enjoying their property and their overall stay. Besides our apartment itself, the location is right in the heart of Philly—within easy walking distance to City Hall, Reading Terminal Market and the Barnes, it also has easy access to the subway system. We took the train to Citizens Park two times during our stay and it took us maybe 20 minutes from our place to the NRG station both times. Next time we come, we’re hoping to be able to book one of their two bedrooms which I was able to take a look at—perfect in every way. Thank you for a wonderful stay."

"Well-located extended stay accommodations near Rittenhouse Square. For less than half what the Rittenhouse charges, we got two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a full kitchen. Le Labo bath and shower products. Comfortable bedding. I had requested a bathtub, and since the one bedrooms don't have bathtubs, we were upgraded to a two bedroom at no extra charge. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Just be aware that there are no amenities--no mini bar, no room service or coffee shop. However, the in-room Lavazza coffee machine made pretty good coffee."

"A friend and I visited The Roost Midtown for a quick NYE trip. The staff was great and helped us with everything we needed. It's so nice to stay in a place with a living room and kitchen. I'll never stay in a traditional hotel again!"

"While I was only there for 1 night business stay, it would be a great place for a weekend leisure trip with full kitchen and laundry if you needed. More of a studio apartment feel than a hotel room. Central location makes it easy access."
