PB hotel design editorial

Planted on South Penn Square directly across from Philadelphia's City Hall, the seventeen-story Beaux-Arts tower that houses The Notary Hotel Philadelphia began its life in 1926 as the Land Title Building annex — a civic address in the truest sense, designed when this stretch of Center City carried the administrative weight of the entire region. The conversion brought 499 rooms into a building whose limestone facade and bracketed cornice still carry that institutional gravity, the illuminated upper floors visible from the exterior image giving the tower a ceremonial quality after dark that no amount of repositioning could manufacture from scratch. The interiors work a considered split personality. Guest rooms deploy a graphic navy-and-cream vocabulary — arched headboards with scalloped panel detailing, bold horizontal stripe drapery, open-frame walnut shelving styled like a scholar's study — that picks up the building's civic character and reinterprets it through a lighter, almost collegiate lens. The restaurant spaces move in a warmer direction entirely: herringbone oak floors, exposed dark timber ceiling beams, arched plaster niches, and green leather banquettes sit alongside elaborately carved decorative panels mounted like architectural salvage against textured plaster walls. Spherical metal pendant lights hang above a bar clad in geometric green tile beneath a grey marble counter. Together, the two registers — precise and graphic in the rooms, layered and tactile at grade — give the property a coherence that feels earned rather than imposed.

The Notary Hotel, Philadelphia, Autograph Collection Reviews

"The hotel overall was very nice. Really love the history. Room was well appointed. But the pillows were awful. Round cylinder type pillows that were very high and they were terrible for one's neck. Bed was very hard. Towels very rough. It would be nice if there was a towel rack at the sink for one's face or hand towel. And please fix the curtain so that the gap at the end does not expose sunlight, maybe a snap on the wall to snap the end to to fix the issue. This property is close to the Convention Center and Reading Market, which unfortunately closes at 6PM so if you want to check it out make sure you go before 6pm."

"We decided on the Notary Hotel due to its location and good reviews. When checking in, Diana was very kind and also upgraded us to the suite as I'm a Titanium member. The room was very spacious with a separate living room with sofa bed. Such great service! Around 7 PM when coming back from dinner, we can hear the people in the room next to us and they were super loud with music playing. I went downstairs and Jamil was great and offered to move us to a different floor (but same room type). Again, fantastic service! As part of the destination fee, you get a couple of drinks included (which can be redeemed at the bar). In addition, there is a $15/day F&B credit, which we used at breakfast for the kids. As part of the Titanium benefits, we had breakfast at the bar and they comp the item which you select off the menu. Our waitress was very attentive and kind (can't remember her name) and service was fantastic! The location of the hotel was great and near many of tourist attractions (typically a 10-15 minute walk). The area around the hotel seemed very safe with a good police presence at all times (especially during the day since there is a courthouse next door). Overall great stay and would definitely recommend this hotel."

"Location was amazing and security staff was great. Excellent service and room was clean. Unfortunately they didn’t have my disability room but they brought a shower chair right away. We were there for volleyball tournament. 3 nights. Amazing staff. Parking only valet and was very expensive."

"Rooms are dark with cheap dated furniture. Hotel generally looks worn, mark on walls chipped paint on numerous door frames. Bed and pillows low quality, sheets and bedding also look worn. Front of house staff could use some training and they also have the infamous “destination” fee that they hit you with, really ridiculous."

"The hotel is fine and a great location if you are a tourist. It is less than satisfactory as a business hotel. There is no business center or public workspace. The real challenge is that the desk in the room is configured so poorly that there is essentially no place to work. There is a tiny space for a laptop but the pop-up electrical is in the middle of that space with nowhere else to plug in. The staff also made it clear they they don't upgrade for Marriott status. Internet was difficult to connect to and Bluetooth on the television had a consistently poor connection. Room was clean enough and nice view but if you plan to work while you are here consider another hotel."
