PB hotel design editorial

At 1439 Chestnut Street, a 49-storey mixed-use tower designed by Bower Lewis Thrower Architects rises above Center City's mid-block grid, its limestone-clad lower floors giving way to a curtain wall that glows with a backlit grid screen above the porte-cochère — an architectural gesture that borrows the language of Philadelphia's ornamental ironwork and scales it to urban landmark height. W Philadelphia opened here in 2021 as part of a broader development that combined hotel rooms, residences, and office space within a single structure, with interiors handled by Rockwell Group, whose approach treats the city's visual culture as primary source material rather than backdrop. Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture, planted in JFK Plaza just blocks away, becomes a recurring motif — appearing on throw pillows and woven into the suite's toile bedrunner — while the suite headboards deploy backlit bronze screens whose grid pattern rhymes with the building's own facade. The all-day restaurant at ground level, fitted with terrazzo floors in warm cream and charcoal, fluted walnut wall paneling, mustard banquettes, and rattan counter stools, carries the relaxed confidence of a mid-century Philadelphia brasserie updated for contemporary appetite. Higher up, the WET deck pool terrace is furnished in acid-green modular seating and globe pendant lamps against a tiled pool whose mosaic pattern recalls the city's tradition of decorative tilework, the downtown skyline framing the whole scene without ceremony.

"Our one-night staycation at W Philadelphia with the kids was the perfect winter escape. We really appreciated the early check-in and the surprise suite upgrade to a Studio King—it made settling in with the kids effortless. The highlight was the outdoor pool experience in the snow (so cool and memorable), followed by a delicious breakfast that capped off a cozy, fun city stay. A quick getaway that felt special from start to finish. Thank you to Timothy and Benjamin and all of the wonderful staff."

"After reading other reviews, it seems like the current staff might be in on some kind of hustle / scam. Mind you, i have stayed at this location more times than I can count, but this was truly the worst....and i didn't even stay there this time. I had a reservation for 2 nights, but I am being charged for what seems to be 3 nights even tho I spoke with 2 representatives that told me since I was a platinum elite member I would have the cancellation fee waived if I decided to cancel day of. Instead I am being charged for $120 more than the actual reservation was. I did not even stay at the hotel, but for a second day in a row, my AMEX is being hit with charges. The day after i called and cancelled, I walked over to speak with the manager Manuela and employees on duty, but they refused to honor and return my funds, labeled the call center representative as a liar, and stated the call center doesn't have the authority to tell the on site staff how to do their job. And now have an even higher charge for double what the original reservation was. This has been the absolute worst experience i've ever dealt with. I loved staying at the W every time i'm in town, but I will never chose this location again. Photo 1 - the original charge when I made the reservation for the 2nd night (the 1st night stay was comp'd via Bonvoy points). Photo 2 - not sure how the original charge got this high when I did not even stay at the hotel. Photo 3 - an additional charge for god knows what"

"Definitely not a family hotel. We arrived to a full on club feel with my 12 year old. Rooms felt like it was off 50 shades of grey just missing the handcuffs lol. Would have loved it just with my hubby but family not so much. Staff was great, the view was great as well."

"We arrived about an hour past the check in time and they did not have rooms available that matched what we booked. They told us we had to just wait in the lobby but did not tell us how long it would take. Mind you I had two young children with me and waiting in a dark hotel lobby was not going to work. The manager said she was going to check with housekeeping but she never even called, she just walk over to the side. It wasn’t until we spoke up that they offered a $100 credit to their expensive hotel restaurant. They blamed the eagles game that night but did not provide any resolution. We left and told them to process a refund of our money and had to go find a different hotel."

"For this brand and price I really would have expected more. We had to call the front desk for the TV to work. The sink at first didn’t drain and then we realized it also leaked. Any hotel that has a sliding door that doesn’t even fully close gets an automatic downgrade IMO. Then to top it off, even though we requested late checkout, our key card stopped working past 11am on our last day, and then the replacement card didn’t work, so we lost time being able to pack. This is FAR from a 5 star hotel and not worth the price. I wouldn’t stay here again."
