PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Fifth Avenue and Market Street, where Pittsburgh's downtown grid meets the shadow of older mid-century towers, a 33-floor curtain wall of aquamarine glass designed by Own Architects announced itself in 2010 as one of the more architecturally confident hospitality commissions the city had seen in decades. The Fairmont Pittsburgh fills the lower floors of what is essentially a mixed-use tower — offices above, 185 hotel rooms below — a format that demanded the interiors work harder to establish a sense of place than a purpose-built property might require. The guest rooms answer that challenge with warm walnut millwork, chocolate and terracotta upholstery, and a geometric bedrunner pattern that recurs across the property in a way that gives the rooms visual coherence without tipping into repetition. The floor-to-ceiling glazing visible from the higher-floor rooms turns Pittsburgh's hilly topography into an asset, the North Shore and the Allegheny riverbank framing views that remind you how dramatically this city sits on its terrain. The restaurant spaces show the property's evolution most clearly: the earlier dining room, with its open kitchen, colorful striped carpet, and suspended bronze pendants, has a clean mid-2000s corporate confidence, while the more recent bar and dining space — a circular marble-topped bar crowned by a tiered brass wine-and-spirits display — carries the warmer, more knowing sensibility of current hospitality design, floral upholstered armchairs and herringbone oak floors pulling the room toward something more convivial.

"This was the second time we have stayed in this particular hotel. Just like our prior stay, it was super clean which made for a comfortable, relaxing stay. It was a special birthday celebration and this hotel definitely made it special. When booking the hotel I requested a slice of cake to be put in our room upon arrival and Bloody Mary's to be served upon arrival for breakfast. I did not have to contact the hotel once to remind. They pay attention to the details. It was a seamless stay. Our spa experience was 100% amazingly well done with every detail of the experience. I without a doubt highly recommend this particular hotel. Kudos to all who make each detail move like a well oiled machine."

"Great hotel, so conveniently located in the cultural district. Walking distance to many things of interest like the river and the Warhol museum. I stayed in nov and dec and was lucky to have a ringside seat for the Veterans Day parade. Room was well equipped, especially the bathroom, and had a great view over the city. A little oasis of calm. Bar and restaurant serving great cocktails and food. Gym well equipped. Friendly staff."

"I would highly recommend the Fairmont in downtown Pittsburgh. It is centrally located, boasts well appointed rooms and very friendly and attentive staff. The restaurant called “FL. 2“ was very good with great service. The hotel is located in such a convenient location, close to market Square, the cultural district, many theaters and excellent restaurants. Staying here is a no-brainer!"

"This is not a luxury or 5 star hotel, I'd hesitate to say it is upscale beyond the first three floors of the building. I booked multiple rooms via the Amex Hotel Collection as I've had good experiences in the past with all hotels that participate in the program and this is the first that has failed to meet expectations. The hotel provided the Hotel Collection benefits for the most part. We were able to check-in at noon on check-in day. We did not receive a room upgrade for either room, however they were located next to each other. We did receive the $100 credit per room. We were able to secure a late checkout, but only until 2 PM and not 4 PM. Location is great if you're in the city for sports, everything is walkable and there are many businesses and restaurants nearby. The view from the room was great. Staff was friendly and I did get a pre-arrival and mid-stay check-in text. More on that in a bit. The lobby, restaurant and gym floors are very nice and give the illusion of a luxury property, but we're all ultimately here to stay in a nice room, right? The rooms are dated and not well maintained for a $400/night asking price, there's no way around it. To add insult to injury, valet is $65/night. A "luxury" hotel room should not have the following issues: Stains on the carpet Stains on the ceiling Stains on window curtains Rusting shower fixtures A bathroom with a half water closet with no door Peeling wallpaper Scuffed and scratched bed headboard Visible layer of dust on all surfaces Insufficient lighting, switches that are broken or don't do anything, burnt out light bulbs Dirty and basic Keurig machine Lack of complementary water ($6 if you want a single 12oz bottle from the mini-bar) Near unusable TV due to slow user interface When I received the mid-stay text asking how everything was, I mentioned the issues above and *the next day* I received an apology, an offer for some water and a dining credit, really not enough for something that should have been included as far as the water goes and the bare minimum as far as compensation. We had already had brunch at the fl. 2 restaurant earlier in the stay and we were not impressed. Ultimately we received some waters (same $6 bottles in the room), some chocolate and assorted nuts. This property does not meet the bar for the Hotel Collection and I would not recommend staying here at this elevated pricing."
