Perched on a granite headland where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic, the shingled Victorian villa at the tip of Castle Hill has commanded this particular stretch of Newport water since 1874, when the Harvard naturalist Alexander Agassiz built it as a private summer residence for marine research. Castle Hill Inn arrived later, with the property converted for hospitality in stages across the twentieth century, the original Agassiz house preserved alongside a scattering of cottages and a beach house distributed across the rocky, wind-shaped promontory. From the water, the massing — a round turret, broad verandas, asymmetrical rooflines softened by mature oaks — carries the atmosphere of a Gilded Age retreat that never quite became institutional. Inside, the rooms divide sharply between the original manor and the newer cottages, and the contrast is part of the point. The Agassiz rooms keep their dark mahogany paneling, bay windows framing unbroken harbor views, carved wooden headboards, and orientalist rugs — a Victorian seriousness that the warm-toned wall sconces and mantel clocks do nothing to soften. The cottage accommodations shift register entirely: white-painted shiplap walls, four-poster beds in cherry, wide-plank hardwood floors, and stacked-stone fireplaces give them the feeling of a well-edited New England beach house. The terrace restaurant, furnished with navy bistro chairs and overscale canvas umbrellas trimmed in cobalt, draws the eye past the stone retaining wall to the bay beyond, where sailboats cross the horizon at sunset.

"We had a GOOFED BED on the first night! We headed to Castle Inn to celebrate my husband's birthday. We booked a private cottage for two nights. We checked in at 4 pm and grabbed a great bite at the on-site restaurant. After a walk around the beautiful property to catch the sunset, we settled in for the night. Getting ready for the night - I jumped into bed -to jump right back out --- because it was very apparent it was DIRTY. The sheets from previous guests were never changed. We called the front desk, and a lovely woman raced down and changed and swapped out everything while I sat in my PJ's, holding our puppy, in awe as I watched her be calm and polite to correct the concern over lite chit-chat. She did an amazing job, but the reality is - the experience somewhat put a damper on our first (to be romantic) night there. Then, the next day, the housekeeper removed our cozy hotel-supplied shirpa blanket, and we called to inquire where it had disappeared to, as it was overcast and I was looking to warm up on the couch. Moments later, the housekeeper returned it and rudely stated that the room is a dog room and that those blankets aren't for guests with dogs (so odd). That evening, we returned from the chef tasting dinner to celebrate the birthday to find a silver poop can literally at the front of our door. I suppose our placement of clean-up bags - below the deck near the shrubs was not sufficient, but that was a bit brazen to place it there, out of all places available, to say the least. Had the room been prepared correctly at the time of our arrival, these headaches would not have happened. Andrew at the front desk upon departure was amazing and knew the issues that took place. He extended us a credit for our lunch and wine, thoughtful and appreciated. We will visit again as the resort is picturesque and the staff is overall absolutely wonderful, we just had a bad first start...and they had a wedding that day so it seemed they were a bit overwhelmed. Till next time - A.Meadows"

"We had a fabulous experience staying at Castle Hill, starting with our welcome champagne and ending with our walk around the 40 acres of grounds. In between we enjoyed a beautiful room with ocean views, delicious and overflowing lobster rolls in the bar and a truly delicious complimentary gourmet breakfast. Also included was a tasty teatime with amazing pastries and tea sandwiches. What really sealed the great experience was the attentive and friendly staff. They go above and beyond and know their jobs very well. The grounds and location make for a beautiful morning walk. I hope to make this an annual stay, we don’t live far and it made for a lovely staycation."

"Have visited the Inn on several occasions and it never disappoints. The Master Room is spacious and elegant without being pretentious. The included breakfast provides a great variety of choices, all of which are well prepared and tasty. The views front the dining area are spectacular and there is the option to eat outside on a multi-level terrace with unobstructed views of the surrounding bay and ocean front. There are comfortable Adirondack chairs on the sloping grass area leading down to the water which provide splendid places to have a drink and watch sailboats, fishing boats and cruise ships pass by. We actually come to Newport more to visit the Inn than the downtown area which can be over crowded and touristy. But it is a relatively short drive to the mansions and the Cliff Walk which are very much worth visiting."

Highly recommend for a relaxing getaway."

"The view was not as spectacular as the balcony from our hotel. I’m glad we can cross it off the list as it wasn’t worth the money- worst clam chowder I ever had Only the cornbread made an impression"
