PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of America's Cup Avenue and Long Wharf in Newport, Rhode Island, where the harbor opens onto a working marina thick with sailing rigging, a five-story building completed in 2019 makes a case for classical massing in a city that has always taken its architectural pedigree seriously. The Brenton Hotel draws its corner element — a curved bay rising through four floors to a shallow mansard drum — directly from the Beaux-Arts civic grammar that Newport's gilded-age builders refined, while the flanking wings settle into warm brick and limestone coursing that anchors the new construction to the historic waterfront streetscape without pastiche. Inside, the interiors translate Newport's sailing culture into something closer to a well-appointed commodore's quarters than a nautical theme exercise. Guest rooms layer navy-and-ivory abstract-patterned carpets with shiplap-paneled headboards, brass wall-mounted reading lights, and dark-framed storage benches in walnut-toned wood — the effect is coastal without resorting to rope and driftwood. Marina views through full-height glazed doors pull the harbor directly into the room. The bar maintains the same register: white tongue-and-groove ceiling planking, brass-stemmed pendant lights over a white quartz counter, leather stools in warm cognac. Framed sailing photography and black-and-white maritime prints distributed across the walls give the rooms a sense of place that feels accumulated rather than installed.

The Brenton Hotel Reviews

"Our long weekend stay at the Brenton was excellent. The hotel is very modern and well taken care of. Our room was clean and had very nice amenities, including a comfortable shower and decent closet spaces. The staff were all very friendly and very responsive. The on-site parking made our check-in a breeze. The hotel restaurant was pricy and we felt there were limited options. However, with a wide array of nearby dining choices, this was not a major problem. We would definitely go back again."

"We came to the Brenton during January with Amex FHR, reading other reviews we had low expectations but decided to go with the flow. What we experienced was nothing short of a comparable 5 star stay. The staff was friendly- attentive and willing to help with anything. The room was on the smaller size but the way it was laid out was very nice and felt like a mini suite. We had room 414 a king water view. Bvlgari amenities- large size so there is no taking home but I have found this to be a better option as you can use the product in excess while on property and enjoy the little luxury. Another thing that was a nice touch was the non alcoholic items in the mini bar are complimentary and they also have a “pantry” on every floor with ice and some ice cream novelties as well as flat and sparking water to fill the bottles in the room. I found this little addition so helpful as with at most true 5* properties it’s just water and the mini bar items are VERY over priced. The breakfast in the living room was intimate and very good. Nice serveware - it’s laid back luxury. There are not much opportunity for upgrades like other FHR properties but to be honest it’s really not needed. Again we came off season so it was inexpensive and uncrowded. It was really a nice getaway. We will be happy to come back in the spring or fall. With realistic expectations this is a gem of a stay!"

"We traveled up from our home in Bucks County PA to see the Gilded Age mansions at Christmastime. Lovely, but a bit, much. I think The Breakers outdoes the Vatican, which outdoes Buckingham Palace. Breakfast at The Brenton was very nice. Nice view of the harbor across the street. Selections were very nice and prepared well. Comfortable seating. Our room also had a harbor view. Now get this, in the stocked fridge, all non alcoholic drinks were free. The third floor has ice, ice cream and treats, all gratis. Everyone was friendly. Housekeeping did a great job. The only critique I have, would be that the young men who park the car need a little more training. Open the door for the lady, too. A couple of the nights we tipped him for just handing the key to us. The car was nearby. Even so, open the doors. Nice gesture, bigger tip. All in all, a very nice stay."

"Checking in was easy, and valet to park the car was very convenient. The rest of the stay was less than stellar. We’re two 30 year olds that probably look younger and our service at the restaurant was crap. We watched table after table get waters and orders put in before we even got a hello. And after that, we again watched everyone else get preferential treatment as if our money wasn’t good enough. This was the second time that this has happened. We were here meeting family about a year ago and had a similar experience. The food is always just okay, but the service is noticeably different when my parents dine with us. When it’s just me and my wife, we have to chase someone down for waters and a check. When my parents are with us, we get service no problem. Would love to know if it’s the young people that don’t look like they tip as well or the lesbian couple that gets worst service. Either way, we’ve watched people seated after us get better service. We know that turn down service occurs at this hotel, and we watched our family get fresh baked cookies before bed while we got none. We said something to the front desk while we went out for dinner. We returned to our room over an hour later, still no turn down service. Okay, that was probably me expecting too much. Jump in the shower, and it’s cold. Not cold just initially but staid cold. We ran it for ten minutes. We took a cold shower at almost a 5 star hotel in Rhode Island, the day before Christmas Eve. The grinch didn’t just steal Christmas, he apparently stole the Brenton’s hot water heater. The rooms are great. The bed is comfy and the room itself is spacious. Again, I want to reiterate that the front desk and valet were no issue. They were pleasant and informative. My main issue is with the restaurant staff, as well as the missing hot water heater for floor 3."

"My friend and I came down for a short girls weekend trip. We stayed at the Brenton Hotel and had a great time. The location was perfect - a short walk to everything we wanted to do. We didn’t take the car out once! Walked up the street to the trolley, down a little ways to the dock for a sunset cruise and lots of shopping and restaurants on Thames street. Don’t miss breakfast at the Corner Cafe (we rode the hotel bikes there), and the cute little shops on the wharf. The nightly turn down service was very nice / chocolate chip cookies on our pillows, juices, soda, silk & sparkling water and ice cream included. The restaurant was average but I would definitely stay here again!"
