PB hotel design editorial

Few hotels in New England carry quite this density of provenance. The Chanler at Cliff Walk is set within a mansion built in 1873 for John Winthrop Chanler, a congressman whose family connections to the Astor dynasty ensured the property was furnished and decorated at a level befitting Newport's Gilded Age ambitions. Perched directly above the Atlantic on the famous Cliff Walk path, the shingle-style structure presents a gambrel roofline, columned porch, and tiered balconies that step down toward Narragansett Bay — a composition visible in the images at its most cinematic in early spring, cherry blossoms framing the white-painted facade against open water. Inside, each of the fifteen rooms takes a distinct historical decorating period as its reference point rather than pursuing consistency across the house. The images bear this out vividly: one room wraps its walls in slate-blue paneling with Delft-tiled fireplace surround, oil portraits in gilt frames, and a Persian medallion rug — closer to a Dutch Golden Age interior than conventional New England inn — while another layers damask bed hangings, serpentine-front chests, and sage-green Brussels carpet around a verde marble fireplace with water views through bay windows. The dining room counters all this accumulated fabric and ornament with a lighter hand: herringbone oak floors, coffered plasterwork ceiling, iron-and-crystal chandeliers, and tall French doors drawing the bay light directly into the room.

"Beautiful dining area with sweeping views of Easton’s Beach. Staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. Menu was very creative; each meal memorable. To walk it off - an easy cliff walk to the mansions."

"I chose the Chanler for a special weekend to celebrate my husband's 75th birthday and it was the perfect choice. The hotel is beautiful, with a historic exterior, a modern, somewhat funky public interior and period-specific rooms/suites, many with expansive views of the beach below, the Cliff Walk and the large hotel lawn. I loved being "on" the Cliff Walk and it was also an easy 20 or so minute walk into town. We chose the Georgian room on the third floor, which did not disappoint (although no elevator, so lots of extra exercise!) It was beautifully decorated in what I assume was period accuracy and had three large windows that let in lots of light, with views out to sea, a comfy king bed, and bathroom with soaking tub and large separate shower with multiple rain heads. Two services a day kept the room and bathroom pristine and filled with fresh towels. There's a fridge with complimentary water and soda and a Nespresso machine, but also fresh coffee downstairs every morning from 7am on. The staff is helpful and friendly and always available for questions or assistance. There's a lovely bar and seating area for drinks before dinner and two restaurants, also open to the public. Breakfast is served only to guests (it is not, however a B&B), but the selection is good and the food was excellent. A car and driver is available every day between 5 and 10pm to take guests to restaurants in town (about a mile or so away) and pick them up afterward. This was a really welcome and delightful service and the driver was a lovely guy who had many great local stories to share. Only two surprising and very minor points: One is that their internet service is quite slow. The other is that most hotels of this calibre typically provide some tangible recognition of a special occasion: bottle of wine or champagne, fruit and chocolate, etc. Here, only a card with birthday greetings from the staff was on display. But these are small "nits" and I will definitely plan another visit. And I'd recommend this highly to anyone wanting a really special experience in Newport."

"My wife and I were looking for a place to get away midweek that wasn’t too far from our home. We found the Chanler online and was intrigued. We booked three nights and the Chanler exceeded our expectations. From our first greeting by the valet team to the front desk services as well as dining, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

"So heartbroken that they renovated away the mansion’s most gorgeous spaces. Women’s bathroom was a destination of its own with birds and details everywhere. Entrance was gorgeous. They striped it all away in favor of modern details that any hotel could have. The outdoor spaces (outdoor restaurant and outdoor fountain area) remain subpar, and they chose to allocate scarce resources and time to renovate the parts of the mansion that were already extraordinary. Beyond confusing how a world-class team would choose to do that. The outdoor chairs for the restaurant are nothing special — same kind of chairs you’d find in 100 restaurants in a city anywhere. Instead of investing in attention to detail and upgrading the outdoor covered restaurant to a world-class, French Riviera style restaurant, they chose to get rid of one of the world’s prettiest bathrooms and prettiest lobbies? The outdoor area by the fountain is also completely unsused. Makes it feel like a cheap wedding venue rather than a destination, boutique resort. I thought “the next chapter” meant they would upgrade the place — instead, they downgraded it."
