PB hotel design editorial

Swept away by the 1938 New England Hurricane and rebuilt from the ground up the following year, the shingle-style compound at the edge of Quonochontaug Pond carries its history visibly in its red cedar cladding, steeply pitched rooflines, and dry-stacked stone walls that have weathered back into the Rhode Island landscape. The Weekapaug Inn reopened in October 2012 after a $20 million renovation — its third life, in a sense — and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From above, the massing reads as a small coastal village set between salt pond and open Atlantic, the pool terrace walled in fieldstone and the grounds rolling into native grasses and marsh. Nancy Taylor Designs handled the interiors, and the approach throughout is one of accumulated domesticity: wicker storage trunks at the foot of beds, floral-print headboards in autumn leaf patterns, striped ticking on occasional chairs, sisal underfoot. The 33 guest rooms with water-facing views make the most of the cottage-scale architecture, vaulted white-painted shiplap ceilings and ladder-back chairs drawn up to breakfast tables perched directly above the glittering pond. In the dining room, dark rattan armchairs are set against wide-plank hardwood floors and walls covered in woven grasscloth, the room opening through folding glass panels onto a terrace where the water fills the entire horizon. Nothing here is trying to be anything other than a very good New England inn.

"We're a little prejudiced because we've only been there 15 times. The Weekapaug Inn is our happy place. It's really wonderful off-season when you can take your dog on the perfect, deserted beach. Everything about the Inn is great, and you should take the chance to have dinner in the bar at their sister hotel in Watch Hill, the Ocean House."

"We were visiting for a winter get away with friends and The Black & White Ball at the sister property. This establishment is a true inspiration. I can’t think of a single element of our stay that was not absolutely perfect. We travel extensively and specifically try to seek out high end resort and boutique hotel experiences. The Weekapaug Inn is now a true North Star for us. The staff was some of the best we have encountered in our travels. Hands down. Jacob at the Front Desk went above and beyond at every single turn. What a wonderful person. Hery at dinner was a standout. The bartender, the maitre de, the housekeeper, the driver…all fantastic. Finding that balance of warm and professional is not easy. This team does so exceptionally. The food at the restaurant and the tie ins to local resources is wonderful. We loved the cocktails! THE ROOM! Where do I begin. The gorgeous space made it possible to just spend time relaxing with dear friends at a time we needed to be near them the most. Everywhere your eye lands in that suite is perfect. There is not a single inch that is missed. The amenities are intelligently thought out and generous. The bed was heavenly. The bathrooms were ideal and that view just ethereal!! If you have an opportunity to visit The Weekapaug, do. You will love its cozy and beautiful setting. We cant wait to visit agian!"

"Relaxing, refreshing and rejuvenating at the Weekapaug Inn is the spirit of this establishment. From the minute you meet the staff and servers you feel comfortable and respected. My wife and I enjoyed the Valentines Day dinner with wine and outstandingly prepared short ribs and lamb chops pared perfectly with a hearty Cabernet. We couldn’t be more pleased with our get away! Kudos to our host, Daniel Abrashoff and staff. We will return!"
