PB hotel design editorial

Carved from 20,000 acres of South Carolina lowcountry along the May River, Palmetto Bluff was developed by Crescent Resources as a private residential community before Montage Hotels & Resorts established its presence here in 2016, absorbing what had been the Inn at Palmetto Bluff and expanding it into one of the most land-rich resort properties in the American Southeast. The white clapboard main inn, visible from the air as a cluster of gabled pavilions reflected in a lagoon threaded through live oak and longleaf pine, draws directly from the vernacular architecture of the Carolina lowcountry — deep porches, pitched metal roofs, and a pedestrian bridge connecting the main structure to an octagonal waterside bar that could have been lifted from a nineteenth-century fishing camp. Inside, Montage Palmetto Bluff moves between two registers. The older inn rooms deploy a restrained plantation vocabulary — dark iron four-poster beds with linen upholstered headboards, wide-plank hardwood floors, plantation shutters filtering the green light off the marsh, and X-frame benches in nailhead leather at the foot of each bed. Newer cottage accommodations shift toward a fresher coastal vernacular: whitewashed shiplap walls, washed-brick fireplaces, navy accents, and rattan bed frames that feel less period-conscious and more attuned to contemporary lowcountry living. The resort bar, with its octagonal coffered ceiling, cherry millwork, and cognac leather club chairs gathered around a sculpted alligator mount, gives the whole property its most distinctly local note.

"Love, love, loved it. I've stayed at the Montage in Laguna Beach once and Palmetto Bluff twice. Their resorts are unparalleled luxury. My most recent stay was at Palmetto Bluff. The staff is warm and accommodating and they do little things (at no charge) like creating a firepit to makes smores every night, warm cookies in the parlor and refreshing smoothies poolside that make the experience extra special."

"The Montage Palmetto Bluff and the staff were absolutely perfect. Everyone went out of their way to welcome us and make us feel pampered. We will return next year."

"This was a very nice property but some real challenges that kept it from being what we would expect from Montage. Our room was booked as poolside guest house, and the room was nice. But it was a 10 minute walk from the main building, or a 10 minute wait for a golf cart shuttle. Given that the guest house pool has no services at all - no food service, no pool bar staff, and not a single employee at the guest house, that was a challenge. In addition, we had golf booked at Anson Point, a beautiful new golf course. Unfortunately, when we called for a shuttle to that course that is 5 miles from the hotel but still part of Palmetto Bluffs, we were informed that the Montage does not provide shuttle rides to Anson. And the bill didn't include the deduction of the Amex credit. All in all, it was good but certainly wasn't anywhere near the caliber of the Montage experience we would expect."

"We had a wonderful stay and were truly impressed with the beauty and atmosphere of the property. The setting is incredibly picturesque, with a peaceful and calming energy that makes it feel like a true escape. The grounds, architecture, and overall design create a charming and memorable experience that stands out. Dining at River House was a highlight, with exceptional service and delicious food, and breakfast at Octagon was consistently excellent. The sense of community throughout the property, along with all the thoughtful details, makes it a very special place that we would gladly return to and recommend to others. We stayed at the Myrtle #7 which was lovely but next trip will want a cottage overlooking the river. Definitely a weekend getaway trip if you need to disconnect!"
