PB hotel design editorial

Carved from 20,000 acres of South Carolina lowcountry along the May River, Palmetto Bluff was developed by Crescent Resources as a private residential community before Montage Hotels & Resorts established its presence here in 2016, absorbing what had been the Inn at Palmetto Bluff and expanding it into one of the most land-rich resort properties in the American Southeast. The white clapboard main inn, visible from the air as a cluster of gabled pavilions reflected in a lagoon threaded through live oak and longleaf pine, draws directly from the vernacular architecture of the Carolina lowcountry — deep porches, pitched metal roofs, and a pedestrian bridge connecting the main structure to an octagonal waterside bar that could have been lifted from a nineteenth-century fishing camp. Inside, Montage Palmetto Bluff moves between two registers. The older inn rooms deploy a restrained plantation vocabulary — dark iron four-poster beds with linen upholstered headboards, wide-plank hardwood floors, plantation shutters filtering the green light off the marsh, and X-frame benches in nailhead leather at the foot of each bed. Newer cottage accommodations shift toward a fresher coastal vernacular: whitewashed shiplap walls, washed-brick fireplaces, navy accents, and rattan bed frames that feel less period-conscious and more attuned to contemporary lowcountry living. The resort bar, with its octagonal coffered ceiling, cherry millwork, and cognac leather club chairs gathered around a sculpted alligator mount, gives the whole property its most distinctly local note.

"We stayed in a 1-bedroom cottage suite on the river. The cottage and view were lovely and we had deer outside our cottage a couple of evenings. The cottage included two bike which was nice to go get coffee and pastries at buzz in the mornings and then bike the trail around the property. Due to the heat and humidity especially in the afternoon and evening we called for golf cart service for dinner reservations. Food at all the places we tried (Octagon and Buffalo’s) was excellent as well as the ice cream shop and coffee place."

"Lovely low country resort with so many great activities and amazing accommodations. Rooms at the large Inn or homes on the property provide lots of options for couples or larger groups. Every activity from bike riding, boating, archery, clay shooting, golf, tennis, horseback rides, and spa services - there is something for everyone!"

"The overall property and staff deserve 5 stars. We ate on the property both nights, and the food was delicious. The hotel provides free bikes and we used them during our entire stay, such a cool way to get around the property. I would highly recommend The Montage at Palmetto Bluff."

"Overall great experience. Beautiful property. Lots to do. Nice accommodations. Recommendation for anyone going if they tell you that you were upgraded to a cottage turn it down. The room might be a little nicer, but the inconvenience of getting to the Inn wasn’t worth it. They have a terrible golf cart. Shuttle service, which they will tell you that they will come pick you up, but they never show up. We were very frustrated with this and annoyed when we had a dinner reservation and no one was there to pick us up even when we called 45 minutes in advance. Happened multiple times. Other than that golf course is beautiful. It’s a really neat place to visit and we would still recommend it."
