PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Market and Meeting Streets, where the commercial heart of Charleston's historic peninsula has drawn visitors since the antebellum era, a postmodern palazzo in warm brick and cream-painted stucco has anchored the city's luxury hospitality scene since 1986. Charleston Place was developed by Orient-Express Hotels and designed to hold its own against the Georgian and Federal streetscapes surrounding it — a 440-room property spread across several city blocks that manages, against considerable odds, to defer to its context rather than overwhelm it. The entrance courtyard, visible in the images, sets the tone immediately: verdigris iron gates, a tiered cast-stone fountain planted with seasonal color, and a striped porte-cochère canopy that borrows its palette from traditional Charleston piazza ironwork. Inside, the double Imperial staircase in the main lobby is the building's defining interior gesture — twin runs of verde Guatemala marble with brass-railed wrought-iron balustrades sweeping upward beneath a multi-tiered crystal chandelier, the cream-pink floor laid in a grid of square-cut Rosa Perlino with dark inset medallion. Guest rooms follow a Federal-inflected register: four-poster beds in dark-stained mahogany, paneled walls painted in soft grey, patterned wool carpets, and swag drapery in stripe and damask layered against French balcony doors. The dining room carries the same vocabulary into darker registers — full-height mahogany paneling, arched mirror surrounds, and chartreuse upholstered armchairs that give the traditional envelope an unexpected current of color.

"My stay at The Charleston Place from April 1–5 was overshadowed by what I have every reason to believe was a bedbug issue—something no guest should ever encounter, especially at a property that presents itself as five-star. I documented everything thoroughly, including photos, and reported it immediately. What followed was not resolution, but dismissal. The hotel relied on claims of third-party inspections to deny the issue, yet despite requesting the extermination reports multiple times, I was never provided with any documentation. No transparency, no meaningful explanation, and no real concern for what I experienced. Let’s be clear: the most troubling part was not just the incident—it was how it was handled. There was no accountability. I incurred out-of-pocket expenses dealing with the aftermath, and the hotel has refused to take responsibility in any meaningful way. Instead, I was offered a future stay at the same property for one night, an offer that is both impractical (as I live out of state) and completely misses the point. After this experience, returning is simply not an option. For a hotel that markets itself as luxury, the response was anything but. A five-star property should meet serious concerns with urgency, transparency, and genuine guest care—not denial and deflection. If this is how The Charleston Place handles legitimate guest issues, the “five-star” label is highly questionable."

"Wow. We were blown away. With other nearby hotels $3000+ per night, we “settled” on The Charleston Place. This place was Ritz+ … gorgeous, just remodeled rooms, spectacular lobby preserving old while looking brand new, over-the-top food, and superb, superb service. The location couldn’t be more convenient. Highly recommend."

"WE have been coming here since it opened in 1986 and have never been disappointed. We have had once in a lifetime events there as in my son's wedding and also Rehearsal dinner at the Riviera Theater. We go 5 to 6 times a year and enjoy the stay immensely . The last year and a half has been a little complicated as they have done extensive and beautiful remodeling, but there is no hotel to compare with the Carleton Place!!"

"We had an outstanding experience here. Despite the ongoing renovations, the hotel had a flawless presentation. The people we met who worked here were friendly and nice. They made our entire family feel very welcome. The room was beautiful and the club lounge had the best food. Only down point was that the fitness area was surprisingly small. Overall, I’d recommend this place to friends and family."

"Came in for business with 25 people. Not a single complaint. Perfect hotel experience from the staff to the room to the food. Every box checked."
