PB hotel design editorial

Facing Marion Square at the northern edge of Charleston's historic peninsula, where the city's antebellum grid gives way to the open green of what was once a militia parade ground, Hotel Bennett was purpose-built in 2019 to hold its own against one of America's most architecturally self-aware streetscapes. The design challenge was considerable: a new seven-story structure with 179 rooms on a site that demands fluency in Lowcountry architectural language. The building responds with sage-green louvered shutters, round porthole windows at the base, arched ground-floor entries, and stepped white cornice lines — a vocabulary drawn from Charleston's antebellum warehouse and merchant house traditions rather than pastiche. The interiors, designed by Glenn PKampf with an eye toward Charleston's planter-class drawing rooms, favor tufted linen headboards set high on the wall above nailhead-trimmed bed frames, glazed bookcases dressed with curated volumes, and soft Persian-influenced rugs in dusty blue and sage. Mahogany case pieces ground the rooms against the pale grey walls, while floral draperies open onto private balconies finished with wrought-iron café furniture. The bar demonstrates a different register — a Calacatta marble counter, white-painted quatrefoil panel detailing, and cascading glass-rod chandeliers with brass armatures that gesture toward Art Deco without committing to it fully. Above, the rooftop pool terrace looks out over the city's low skyline toward the harbor, its canvas umbrellas and limestone deck offering an uncomplicated contrast to the decorative density below.

"My adult daughter and I visited Charleston for the first time and started our trip at this property. We were greeted by friendly, helpful staff at every point of our arrival (valet, bell hop, front desk/check-in, concierge). The concierge on staff was Kevin, and he offered us dinner reservation assistance, tour bookings, and even reservations and suggestions for our time in Beaufort and Savannah. He had a stash of helpful maps he has created that he kindly shared with us to ease our explorations. The day after we checked in was Easter, and he secured us brunch reservations at Slightly North of Broad (S.N.O.B.) which ended up being our favorite meal of the trip. He is very knowledgeable and well-connected, and obviously takes pleasure in helping guests enjoy their experiences in Charleston and surrounding areas. Our room was very nice, and also clean, with a view of the church across the street. It was smaller than we would have preferred, but we booked at the last minute and know they have bigger rooms available (I think we were lucky to get the last one!). Hannah was extremely helpful with our bags at check out, and another concierge, Aubrey, went above and beyond helping us get cash we needed for a tour when we had no debit card with us. From check-in to check-out, every employee we encountered was very helpful and exuded the true Southern hospitality we have always heard about."

"Hotel Bennett is southern charm and hospitality done perfectly! The hotel is gorgeous and everyone is so friendly. Kevin at the concierge is an absolute gem of the hotel! We were traveling with our 8 month old so wanted to enjoy the city, but with some flexibility. Kevin had all the answers! He’s a wealth of knowledge. He provided us with special guides of the best photo ops in the city with such great detail- so fun! He gave us the best tips for us to do our own walking tour of the city. And he recommend restaurants and got us reservations. Kevin makes you feel right at home and is a delight!"

"Our experience at the Bennett was mixed. The room we were placed in was an awful tiny shoebox with a small window facing a wall. SOOO super cramped with barely any space to walk or move. I stubbed my toe numerous times just trying to walk away from the bed. The nightable is sandwiched between the bed and a door that closes to the bathroom but the door is jammed because of the nightable in front of it. Also its so wedged in that we had to physically move the nightable out of its space to be able to use the outlet. That room gave me such a bad feeling and a terrible first impression of the hotel It also had a tiny window facing an interior courtyard and wall. Super dark.I asked to change rooms and was told there was nothing else available until the 3rd night of our 3 night stay. Lily at the front desk was amazing as was Jabhar ( night time front desk) The two of them were able to secure a change to a more spacious, brighter room but not until the 3rd night. This room was not super luxurious but it was more spacious and felt acceptable and pleasant. It also outward window facing King Street so it was bright. I was pretty shocked at the difference and to be honest anyone paying the rates for a luxury hotel should never be put in a room like our first one. Staff was inconsistent at this hotel. Lily, Jabhar, and Luke the bellman were all amazng friendly and accommodating. They were stellar and should be recognized. Luis at the desk was also super friendly and helfpul. The other night time front desk person ( I think his name was Drew) seemed annoyed ,difficult and I got the impression that the room could have been changed the second night but he just didnt want to deal with it ( It seemed pretty clear that he was over- riding his colleague who was on the verge of letting us move rooms the 2nd night.) He just seemed annoyed and not at all customer service oriented or empathetic. To be I would have felt a lot better about the hotel had they either moved our room immediately or had we never been placed in the room. The concierges were not particularly warm or helpful. I was surprised that there was no complimentary coffee offered in the looby in the morning. That is unusual and I have never seen that in a luxury hotel There were many positives- the location is amazing right on Marion Square and King Street. An easy walk to numerous restaurants, King Street shops, the market, and a nice walk to the waterfront area. The outdoor seating in front of the hotel facing Marion Square is lovely. The piazza on the 3rd floor is a great- really nice outdoor area to read, have coffee, sit and lounge. The pool on the rooftop is nice but very small and was always crowded so pretty hard to get seating. We really only wanted to use it at the end of the day to relax after being out all day. The Patisserie is great! Great breakfast and pastry options, fresh fruit, coffee, etc. So nice to have right at the hotel The gym is small but well equipped. The breakfast at Gabrielle's was delicious. Overall while there positives at this hotel the experience with the first room was my first impression and really stayed with me. Given it is supposed to be a luxury hotel that room was unacceptable especially given the rates."

"Southern charm, elegance, perfect service and sheer beauty, the Bennett is regal, posh and perfect. The beds are plush, the rooms beautiful, the shower hot and huge and the smell of the soaps divine. Great King St location too!"
