PB hotel design editorial

Facing the cobblestones of Market Street in Charleston's historic district, a granite-faced antebellum commercial building dating to circa 1844 has held its ground through nearly two centuries of Southern history — and the Planters Inn, set within its walls, makes no attempt to disguise that longevity. The deep-hunter-green awning, gas lanterns, and grid-paned storefront windows visible from the street belong to a building that predates the hotel's current incarnation by well over a century, and the interior follows that cue with conviction. Rooms are furnished with dark mahogany four-poster beds — some with carved spiral columns, others with ebonized square frames — topped with embroidered white matelassé coverlets and striped bed skirts in sage and cream. Chinoiserie panels hang above walnut dressers, white-painted plaster fireplaces anchor the sitting areas, and pendant lanterns in aged brass drop from crown-moulded ceilings that carry the proportions of antebellum domestic architecture rather than hotel construction. The courtyard behind the main building is the property's quietest argument for its own character: a long reflecting pool edged in clipped boxwood parterres, crape myrtles rising through the geometry, and cast-iron garden chairs arranged beneath arched colonnades painted in warm terracotta. The Peninsula Grill, housed in a garden room dense with tropical planting and furnished with black bentwood chairs at white-clothed tables, extends that mood into dining. Across its 64 rooms and suites, the hotel maintains a register closer to a well-inherited Charleston townhouse than to managed hospitality.

"It's a lovely welcoming hotel in a great location. It's walkable to restaurants, attractions, the water and much more. There are gardens nestled between the buildings and in the outdoor Peninsula restaurant area . Our room was warm and comfortable, albeit a bit tired, with many places to stash your items. My biggest complaint with the room is the lack of amenities. At this rate and cotton swabs, make up remover, black face towels and plusher towels??? The staff was very welcoming and helpful."

"Everything about the Planter's Inn is wonderful. From the valet to the front desk, every interaction was perfect. The Peninsula Grill is fantastic and Cory at the bar is fabulous. The hotel itself is wonderful in its traditional, elegant stylings, and is a perfect quiet respite after a long day. If you prefer to stay somewhere you can relax without constant noise and distraction, this is the place."

"I don't have a large enough vocabulary to adequately express how wonderful this place is. My wife and I stayed there along with some of my family for a weekend, and we found the staff, atmosphere and location all outstanding. I can't recommend this property enough. Want a genuine Old Charleston experience with wonderfully modern amenities? Here you go. Planters Inn."

"The Planters in is absolutely gorgeous. The lobby has a historic, yet clean warm vibe. There’s delicious coffee in the morning available to drink for free. There’s easy access to the restaurant in house and the little coffee shop next-door called Benne’s. I can honestly say that I poured through reviews and 90% of the things people talked about have been addressed. The rooms have double paned glass, wooden shutters, and thick curtains in an effort to keep out the noise. The smell of the hotel was lovely, not musty at all. The front desk was kind and helpful at all times. The rooms are also huge and beautiful. The bed was super comfortable. My only hesitation to give this Hotel and perfect review is the housekeeping does not represent the service of this level of a hotel. We would leave in the morning and come back at 4 o’clock, and our room would not be made up. We would call downstairs and request for the room to be made up and after coming back from dinner would find that the only thing done was the bed made. There could be a towel on the floor in the bathroom or garbage on the counter, needing to be disposed of, or clothes on the floor. At other hotels of this caliber things would be folded garbage would be disposed of. I called down to the desk one day to ask someone to come clean and he asked “what would you like them to do?” My parents were also at the hotel. They had a similarly disappointing experience with the housekeeping. My only other hesitation is some rooms do experience noise. My room had quite a bit of noise from a nearby nightclub and the street traffic overnight, but my parents room had none. The hotel seems to do everything they can to prevent noise but if you’re a light sleeper I would bring ear plugs. This still wouldn’t deter me from staying at the Planters Inn though."
