PB hotel design editorial

At 67 State Street in Charleston's French Quarter, a four-storey building clad in pale blonde brick carries the massing of early twentieth-century commercial architecture while functioning as a purpose-built boutique hotel. The Spectator Hotel, which debuted in 2015 with 41 rooms across its four floors, was designed to feel like a grand private residence rather than a new construction — a challenge made more delicate by its position within one of America's most carefully preserved historic districts. The facade presents as confidently classical, its arched upper-floor windows trimmed with wrought-iron Juliet balconies and framed by pilastered limestone surrounds, sabal palms softening the street-level entry beneath a brass-lettered canopy. Interior designer Sara Sugarman shaped the common spaces around an early-to-mid twentieth-century sensibility that draws from Art Deco without strict period fidelity. The lobby places silver-velvet lounge chairs alongside bold black-and-white striped side tables and a brass-framed glass coffee table, the whole composition anchored by floor-to-ceiling navy curtains against near-black walls. The adjacent bar shifts registers entirely — dark-stained bookshelves packed with leather-bound volumes, tufted leather Chesterfield seating, a mounted white peacock, and an eclectic layering of striped, geometric, and patterned upholstery that gives the room the atmosphere of an eccentric collector's drawing room. Guest rooms, by contrast, settle into a calmer register: ebonized four-poster beds, tufted velvet headboards in sapphire blue, and damask-patterned carpeting in sage and grey.

"I’d never been to Charleston before and The Spectator was a perfect first experience. The rooms were spacious and great. The service and hospitality were top notch - from the welcome cocktail to the various butlers who helped with any request. Breakfast was included and was also delicious. Lastly, the location seemed to be perfect given we were able to walk easily everywhere we needed to go."

"We stayed here as a family of four and loved the impeccable hospitality, decor, comfortable furnishings, and location. Our kids enjoyed the breakfast delivered to our room and nightly treats waiting for us after we returned for the evening. We made use of the complimentary bicycles and explored the city on two different occasions. Again, the attention to detail was unmatched!"

"Second time staying and always so impressed! Chuck checked us in and made note that we were celebrating an anniversary and a birthday. Treats left in our room to make us feel special! Breakfasts that are out of this world! We got to reconnect with Jim and he spoiled us! The Spectator is the only hotel we’ve stayed at with butlers - the coolest experience! Craft cocktails, snacks in your fridge waiting for you, plush linens & comfy beds, bath salts supplied at request, and so much more. A decadent experience leaving guests wanting to come back!"

"We had a fantastic stay at the Spectator hotel for a long weekend getaway. This has to be one of the nicest hotels from cleanliness, services, amenities, and overall stay that we have experienced. The bellman, David, was exceptional. Courteous, knowledgable, and overall helpfulness were unparalleled. Front desk staff was also warm, welcoming, and accommodating to us throughout. This hotel offers complimentary breakfast, complimentary beverages in your room (still/sparkling water and sodas) as well as snacks that are all refreshed daily. The bed was ultra comfy and we didn’t hear a peep from either inside or outside the hotel. Would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend."

"Perfect location for romantic getaway. Concierges are so helpful with restaurant suggestions and activities. Gorgeous bar area and those hot breakfast room service experiences are just what every couple needs when taking time to reconnect. Having a butler is something that is easy to get used to having available."
