PB hotel design editorial

At 67 State Street in Charleston's French Quarter, a four-storey building clad in pale blonde brick carries the massing of early twentieth-century commercial architecture while functioning as a purpose-built boutique hotel. The Spectator Hotel, which debuted in 2015 with 41 rooms across its four floors, was designed to feel like a grand private residence rather than a new construction — a challenge made more delicate by its position within one of America's most carefully preserved historic districts. The facade presents as confidently classical, its arched upper-floor windows trimmed with wrought-iron Juliet balconies and framed by pilastered limestone surrounds, sabal palms softening the street-level entry beneath a brass-lettered canopy. Interior designer Sara Sugarman shaped the common spaces around an early-to-mid twentieth-century sensibility that draws from Art Deco without strict period fidelity. The lobby places silver-velvet lounge chairs alongside bold black-and-white striped side tables and a brass-framed glass coffee table, the whole composition anchored by floor-to-ceiling navy curtains against near-black walls. The adjacent bar shifts registers entirely — dark-stained bookshelves packed with leather-bound volumes, tufted leather Chesterfield seating, a mounted white peacock, and an eclectic layering of striped, geometric, and patterned upholstery that gives the room the atmosphere of an eccentric collector's drawing room. Guest rooms, by contrast, settle into a calmer register: ebonized four-poster beds, tufted velvet headboards in sapphire blue, and damask-patterned carpeting in sage and grey.

"We had the pleasure of staying at the Spectator Hotel and from the moment we checked in, we were greeted with a warm welcome and a lovely drink. Our guest room was beautiful, the daily breakfast was fantastic, and the evening nightcaps were the perfect end to the day. We enjoyed the bar area and our bartenders Rose and Anna were lovely and provided wonderful conversation. Our Butler Will was also fantastic. Charleston is a beautiful place and we look forward to visiting again and staying at The Spectator."

"Wonderfully located boutique hotel. Old world charm with modern rooms. The staff from valet, front desk, butlers to the manager could not have been more helpful and accommodating. In room breakfast was a nice treat. We will certainly return to Charleston SC and this hotel to experience more of the City and great dining choices."

"The Spectator Hotel is ideally located in walking distance to all of downtown. It is beautifully styled, very clean and well maintained, including beautiful fresh flowers on the entry table. Southern hospitality reigns~as we were well greeted everyday as we came and went. The welcome greeting, meeting our butler and being offered and served a cocktail was a special touch that we appreciated. The service was exceptional from lobby staff, to butlers, housekeeping, and bar staff. We enjoyed the live jazz in the bar one night, which was an added plus. Also, the bar staff created well made cocktails. The candy jar in the lobby was special touch, as were the in-room drinks, snacks and the little nightcaps served in chocolate cups. Breakfasts were ample and delicious. We would highly recommend this hotel and happily return ourselves. Our butler for most of our stay was Darryl and shout out to him for his most hospitable, friendly service."

"We were at the Spectator Hotel for five nights at the end of March. It was incredible, I would definitely plan to go back! Hannah C and Wade in Concierge, Matt, James, and Tyler in Valet, and our Housekeepers and Butlers were so friendly, helpful, personable and welcoming. Highly recommend!!"

"I loved everything about our stay at this hotel. We arrived early and our room wasn’t ready but they held our bags and texted me later when the room was ready. We booked a king room, which was spacious and so clean. The bed was very comfortable, bathroom had double sinks, a heated towel rack and huge walk in shower. The snacks & drinks in the room were such a treat & restocked every day. Breakfast was brought to our room each morning & was delicious! The attention to detail & little things, turn down service each night, water on our nightstands, the night caps each night, made this hotel very memorable. I could go on & on… Everyone at this hotel was friendly and went above & beyond. I can not say enough good things about this hotel & would not hesitate to stay again!!"
