Built in 1886 for cotton merchant Francis Silas Rodgers at a cost of approximately $200,000 — an extraordinary sum at the time — this five-story Second Empire mansion on Wentworth Street in Charleston's Harleston Village stands as one of the most architecturally complete examples of Gilded Age excess in the American South. The Wentworth Mansion's exterior announces its ambitions immediately: red brick trimmed in cream-painted limestone quoins and cornice work, a slate mansard roof punctuated by decorative ironwork cresting, and two tiers of columned verandas that filter the Carolina light before it reaches the interior. The building was converted into a 21-room inn in 1998, and the restoration preserved the original heart-pine floors, hand-carved mahogany woodwork, and Tiffany stained glass that Rodgers had commissioned for the principal rooms. Inside, the approach to the guest rooms keeps faith with the house's Victorian origins without tipping into pastiche. Mahogany sleigh beds and campaign-style chairs sit against walls painted in warm ochre or soft grey, original marble and cast-iron fireplaces anchored by gilded mirrors, Persian rugs laid over wide-plank pine — the ensemble has the settled confidence of a private house rather than a period recreation. The glassed-in veranda, furnished with wicker armchairs and botanical-print Roman shades, serves as the breakfast room, its checkerboard tile floor and hanging pothos giving it the ease of a Lowcountry garden room. The bar, with its coffered ceiling and a substantial stone fireplace surround, brings a more contemporary restraint to bear on the historic shell.

"My favorite experience in a 5-day visit to Charleston? Staying at the Wentworth Mansion. Visiting Charleston means tours that allow you to *observe* history--but staying at the Wentworth invites you to **step into** history. We stayed at 3 hotels across a 4-night adventure, and after the Wentworth on nt #2, I kept wishing we'd stayed there the whole time. Even though the price point was higher, it exceeded the experience at the other two hotels by such leaps and bounds, it would have been worth it dollar-for-dollar. The spaciousness of the rooms, the abundance of amazing food and drink and the unique, walkable location through some of Charleston's most amazing streets...just spectacular. You're about a mile from Meeting Street, a mile from the Charleston Visitor's center (via a walk through the beautiful College of Charleston campus), and in proximity to jaw-dropping homes and history. The staff was so warm and welcoming. They made us feel like we were relatives who arrived for a visit. And, the breakfast at Circa 1886 was BEYOND amazing. Pastries and coffee available in the drawing room for early risers, and the food and wine at happy hour was divine. You can sit inside or in the beautiful gardens. Every room is unique - we stayed in a Mansion Room, which was huge, had a working gas fireplace, giant windows, and more. This experience is one I (and my traveling companion) will remember for decades to come."

"Wonderful ambience, like being in someone’s historic home in the Low Country. Attentive and cordial staff. Inviting hors d’oeuvres and wine in the afternoon. Great restaurant."

"Wonderful location and a spectacular place. Truly the staff makes you feel like family and wants you to feel like you are at home. The rooms are beautiful, the woodwork amazing and the entire grounds wonderful. The appetizers and wine were delicious, where else even gives you a nightcap? Breakfast in the restaurant was delicious. Free beverages in the room and they even leave homemade chocolates when they turn down the bed in the evening. We don’t want to leave, it was the most amazing place we have ever stayed and we have traveled the world. We will definitely be back, and we look forward to it!"

"We had a one night stay at Wentworth Mansion and wished it could have been 10 nights. The inn is located within walking distance of King Street, University of Charleston and lots of historical locations. We were greeted into the reception hall by a wonderfully warm staff and were seated at the desk in front of the most delightful fresh flower arrangement. Small touches like fresh flowers througout the inn and curtains with a cotton plant print (a nod to the original owner) did not go unnoticed and made our stay very special. Our room was emormous, complete with a working fireplace and the most luxurious robes we're ever had the pleasure to wear. Classical music was playing upon our entry which helped transport us to a feeling that we were enjoying our stay just after the beautiful home was built. Our bathroom was also spacious and our windows overlooked the Cooper River Bridge. The ammenites in the bathroom were L'Occitaine and smelled heavenly. We were offered a lovely charcuterie spread complete with wine on the sun porch in the early evening, and before we went to bed, we enjoyed a nightcap of Port, Sherry and Brandy in the living room. Our breakfast at Circa 1886 was included with our stay. It was expertly prepared and our service was top notch. Our server sent us home with buttery croissants because breakfast was more than we could eat. Above everything else was the welcoming, hosptiable and knowledgeable staff. Tristan, Ryder and Fiona made our stay absolutley perfect."

"The Wentworth was an excellent choice for our stay in Charleston. It is a beautifully restored mansion with many of the original furnishings, artwork and silver on display. Centrally located yet in a quiet neighborhood , where so many attractions, museums , shopping and dining are within walking distance. The service was impeccable, our room amazingly large with every amenity available. Breakfast is served in the lovely Circa 1886 restaurant which also serves dinner. There is lemonade served in the afternoon on the patio and appetizers in the evening. Lots of rooms to read or relax in. Yes we will be back!"
