Built in 1886 for cotton merchant Francis Silas Rodgers at a cost of approximately $200,000 — an extraordinary sum at the time — this five-story Second Empire mansion on Wentworth Street in Charleston's Harleston Village stands as one of the most architecturally complete examples of Gilded Age excess in the American South. The Wentworth Mansion's exterior announces its ambitions immediately: red brick trimmed in cream-painted limestone quoins and cornice work, a slate mansard roof punctuated by decorative ironwork cresting, and two tiers of columned verandas that filter the Carolina light before it reaches the interior. The building was converted into a 21-room inn in 1998, and the restoration preserved the original heart-pine floors, hand-carved mahogany woodwork, and Tiffany stained glass that Rodgers had commissioned for the principal rooms. Inside, the approach to the guest rooms keeps faith with the house's Victorian origins without tipping into pastiche. Mahogany sleigh beds and campaign-style chairs sit against walls painted in warm ochre or soft grey, original marble and cast-iron fireplaces anchored by gilded mirrors, Persian rugs laid over wide-plank pine — the ensemble has the settled confidence of a private house rather than a period recreation. The glassed-in veranda, furnished with wicker armchairs and botanical-print Roman shades, serves as the breakfast room, its checkerboard tile floor and hanging pothos giving it the ease of a Lowcountry garden room. The bar, with its coffered ceiling and a substantial stone fireplace surround, brings a more contemporary restraint to bear on the historic shell.

"Hands-down, the best place to stay in Charleston!"

"Outstanding experience in every way. Perfect ambiance, friendly staff, and tasty breakfast. Such a memorable, historic, stately mansion with kind staff, in a warm, hospitable town! We can’t wait to return!"

"We decided on a last-minute weekend getaway to Charleston, and I had been wanting to stay at the Wentworth Mansion for quite some time. When I saw they had one room left—a Mansion Room—we booked it right away. Leading up to our arrival, communication with the mansion staff was always prompt, friendly, and pleasant. Upon arrival, we were able to check in early since we had spa appointments scheduled (more on that later). To my surprise, our room was ready. We were offered a welcome glass of champagne and escorted to our room by a bellman who kindly grabbed everything from our car. The room itself was incredibly spacious, beautiful, and immaculately clean. Next stop was the spa. I had a massage and my husband had a facial, and afterward we both enjoyed the steam shower. The spa experience was wonderful and very relaxing—especially for a spa connected to a hotel. My only two small negatives were the road noise that could occasionally be heard in the massage room, and the steam shower advertised “aromatherapy,” though it mostly just smelled like a regular steamy shower. Dinner at Circa was fantastic. This was our second time dining there, and we appreciated that the menu had changed since our last visit. It made the experience feel completely new. Breakfast at Circa (for Mansion guests) was just as amazing—made to order with a basket of pastries and fruit brought out before the meal. Another lovely touch was the chocolates left during turndown service each night, and they were different each evening. Two staff members truly stood out during our stay. Fiona was the first face we saw when entering the Mansion and was incredibly personable. Tristan also deserves a special mention—after we had a particularly wild Uber ride back one afternoon, he immediately sensed it and poured us each a glass of sherry with a smile, saying, “Here’s some medicine.” Those two were absolute gems. Truly, everyone we encountered was wonderful, but they made a memorable impression. Unfortunately, the one major downside to our stay was the bed. It was shockingly uncomfortable. My husband and I are in our late 30s and woke up barely able to walk because our backs and hips hurt so badly. We regularly stay in luxury accommodations and have never experienced a bed this uncomfortable before. For a property at this level, the bed should be one of the highlights of the stay—not the worst part. Overall, the service, food, and atmosphere at Wentworth Mansion were exceptional. If the bed situation were addressed, this would easily be one of our favorite stays in Charleston."

"I love staying at the Wentworth Mansion. It is such a beautiful home with all the original stunning architectural details, including tiffany windows. The bed, linens and pillows are so luxurious. The included breakfast is very generous and delicious. But most of all, the staff are so welcoming! They love what they do and they love their guests! See you next year!"

"From the moment we arrived in the private parking area until we left the next day it was a 5 star experience. Complementary glass of champagne at checkin, a brief tour of the mansion with history on the way to our room, our Garden Suite with stocked refrigerator with a selection of beverages, happy hour and the opportunity to visit with other guest, assistance during our stay, the breakfast in the Circa 1886 restaurant and sadly our checkout. Everyone was friendly, helpful and professional. The location of the property was great. We decided not to bring our dog but now wish we should have. Many "dog friendly" establishments are dog "tolerant "....not the case here. I witnessed a true dog friendly environment.....next time Pippa will get to go."
