PB hotel design editorial

Two late-nineteenth-century commercial brick buildings on Fourth Avenue North in downtown Nashville, their Romanesque Revival facades intact above a ground-floor intervention of floor-to-ceiling glass, form the architectural shell of the Bankers Alley Hotel. The conversion, completed in 2018, threads 74 rooms through structures that once housed financial offices, and the lobby makes no attempt to disguise the industrial bones underneath — polished concrete floors, white-painted cast-iron columns with Corinthian capitals, and large-scale video projections washing across the walls in a gesture that signals contemporary art intentions before a single artwork appears on the walls upstairs. The rooms carry walnut-framed platform beds and purple dotted-pattern rugs against light oak flooring, patterned stripe drapery adding graphic weight without heaviness — a palette assembled with enough specificity to distinguish the property from generic boutique-hotel convention. Playful contemporary sculpture turns up unexpectedly in the guest rooms, a bright blue penguin standing sentinel in one double-queen configuration, consistent with the 21c Museum Hotel model of treating every corridor and sleeping room as active gallery space. The restaurant interior is among the more resolved moments in the building: original coffered ceiling structure remains exposed overhead, woven timber inserts dropped into each bay to warm the acoustics, while an open kitchen anchored by a brick-faced wood-burning oven gives the room a gravitational centre that the broader hotel experience, ambitious as it is, otherwise distributes across multiple registers.

"I absolutely loved this hotel. The atmosphere was very trendy, and the staff was especially helpful. The location was perfect, we were walking distance from everything, and that definitely helped us save on parking and uber costs. Plus the rooms were wonderful, the walls are decorated with beautiful artwork and the bathroom was huge. Overall a great experience."

"This hotel is in a great location with just being a couple blocks from Broadway. The area had many bars and restaurants that were walking distance. The staff was friendly and very knowledgable about the history of the building and artist that they display. The room was clean and spacious. Their restaurant Gray & Dudley had a great atmosphere with many exceptional cocktails. I would highly recommend making a visit to the restaurant even if you are not staying at the establishment."

"First, this hotel has an excellent location, easily the best feature of the hotel. It's easy walking distance to Broadway and also to the Bicentennial Capitol Mall area. I also thought the hotel is well decorated, I like the art exhibit on site, and the room was nice. I did find the hotel to be clean overall, although they never cleaned our room during a four-night stay. We visited the on-site restaurant daily for at least a drink since we had to redeem our food and beverage credit. The first night it was a bit full and they seemed understaffed; we were never able to get table service and had to stand at the bar for service. The other days it wasn't a problem. The negatives are mostly around price and overcharging. First, they have a mandatory $30 a day destination fee. Maybe other people realize this before booking, I didn't and it seems weird for a hotel that's not a resort or anything. Second, the parking is very expensive at $60 a day, but maybe that's too be expected downtown. The main problem was on my final bill they charged me two to three times for every fee, so my final bill was over double what it should have been. They also put a hold on my credit card for way over the final amount of my bill, it didn't cause me problems but could cause problems for some people. My husband and I just found the extreme overbilling shady, I don't know what would have happened if I didn't pay attention to it. To the credit of the hotel, they took off the extra charges and removed one night of the parking fee because of it."

"The location is a 10+, staff are great and the restaurant had yummy food. However, our room was the size of a closet with only room for one chair. One of us had to sit on the bed when we were in the room. The internet wouldn’t even allow us to stream Netflix or watch TV on our computer. And we are Diamond members and had to pay Nashville Destination charges and parking. Over $200 for two nights. Look around for a better deal."

"The service from the time you check-in to check-out was excellent. Katie at the bar/restaurant was super fun and gave great recommendations. The GM Levi was very guest focused and super friendly. Our room overlooking Nissan Stadium was amazing. Overall, perfect stay and all walking distance to Broadway and some really fun places at Printers Ally. Thanks for making our anniversary and birthday trip memorable!"
