PB hotel design editorial

Richard Montfort's 1900 Richardsonian Romanesque terminal — its honey-colored limestone clock tower still the most recognizable silhouette on the Nashville skyline — was derelict for years before it found new purpose as Union Station Nashville Yards, an Autograph Collection property that refuses to let the building's railway past recede into decorative wallpaper. The great barrel-vaulted headhouse, with its gilt plasterwork, dark mahogany balconies, and cascading crystal chandeliers, has been preserved with enough fidelity that arriving in the lobby still carries something of the charged atmosphere a departing passenger might have felt in 1910. Vintage arrivals-and-departures boards mounted along the bar walls reinforce that orientation toward history, while a oval marble-topped bar anchored at the center of the former waiting hall holds the room in the present tense. The 125 guestrooms, carved from the upper floors of the original structure, navigate a more contemporary register: herringbone white oak floors, channeled-velvet headboards in warm taupe, brass swing-arm sconces, and sheer linen curtains that pool over the arched window openings. Corner suites gain extraordinary ceiling height and tripartite windows that frame downtown Nashville's competing skylines — new glass towers pushing against the limestone gables below. The palette throughout keeps faith with the building's material warmth, cream and bronze and slate blue replacing any impulse toward period cosplay, so the design sits comfortably inside one of the American South's great civic monuments without competing with it.

"Really cool space, large rooms, and nice lobby for hanging out. The location is very walkable location. The hotel catering was only ok."

"I like the Autograph brand. This hotel did not disappoint. Marriott took an old railroad depot and turned it into one of their signature autograph Hotels. My brother and I stayed here for the FCS championship game in which Montana State University played the Illinois State red birds. This hotel is with an easy walking distance of the Honky Tonks on Broadway. It was also a fairly short distance to Vanderbilt University, where the championship game was played. The building itself was very nice. I must say that the rooms have the tallest ceiling that I have ever been in, I would estimate 25 feet up. The bar was very nice as was the restaurant."

"So, we stayed at this property once before and loved the hotel. In fact, loved it so much that we planned a return visit for New Year’s Eve. Made my reservation and then it happened. First, I get a voicemail saying that the hotel was hosting a private event and the entire lobby along with restaurants and bars would be closed to hotel guests! This notification was exactly one week prior to our arrival! This is a dealbreaker. But, given it’s NYE we have zero chance of securing another property comparable to the Union Station. The representative from the hotel was indifferent and offered to cancel my stay. The manager also reached out but offered mostly excuses for their poor customer service. Unfortunately, this terrible experience has caused me to stay elsewhere when I visit Nashville,"

"Nice looking hotel at first glance. Then you will trip over the ragged carpet. You wont have soap in your room. You will order expensive room service to only taste cheap disgusting tasting foods. They will make you valet, and spend eighty two dollars a night to do so. You will call for your car in the morning. Only to find the guy sleeping in his. I paid for the room with my reward points only to be charged for the room again on the way out. This situation is still not handled. Not as nice as it appeared. Not happy at all with the experience."

"My wife and I were celebrating an especially significant anniversary and were looking for lodging that suited the occasion. We considered places like Conrad, Four Seasons, Grand Hyatt and we picked The Union Station for its character, and it did not disappoint. The Union Station was fit for my queen. The building capitalized on every bit of its historical heritage as a train station with architectural elements reminiscent of Grand Central Terminal—ornate arched ceilings, grand chandeliers, and the elegant use of beautiful wood throughout. Genesis was awesome. She took time to tell us about the hotel and to make us feel at home. She was our first touchpoint and was representative of the service we received the duration of our stay. We had a corner room with awesome 20+ foot ceilings, near floor to ceiling windows and it was immaculate. My wife was so comfortable that she slept directly on the sheets rather than her customary sheets that she brings from home! 🤣 (No offense, she'd do that if we were staying at the Taj mahal) It was located in walking distance from a number of museums and restaurants. We enjoyed one of the best meals we have ever had less than two blocks at Prince's Hot Chicken in Assembly Food Hall. We enjoyed a great experience at the African American Museum right down the street. We celebrated with a pleasant anniversary dinner right next door at The Finch. And then we went to a Jazz Club that was within walking distance. The Union Station made for a great centerpiece for a wonderful anniversary getaway, providing convenient access to many of the wonderful things that Nashville has to offer. It was my first time using valet and the process was streamlined and seamless. Frankly, it's the only practical way of parking at the hotel and was easy enough to not need workaround plans. That access comes with an important caveat—noise, but moderate noise. You're around the corner from clubs and bars, and the hotel is above an active train track. So, some noise would be a reasonable expectations. For me, the noise level was present but negligible and was not disruptive to our talking or sleeping. If we're ever back in Nashville, this will be on our shortlist of places to stay. It's pricier than the upper midscale hotels we typically frequent, but I expected it to be and it was worth every penny."
