PB hotel design editorial

That grid of arched windows — white concrete surrounds framing dark glass in a rhythm that repeats across fourteen floors above Waller Creek — belongs to a 1970s motor hotel that Austin largely forgot until Avroko and the Line Hotel group saw something worth saving. When The LINE Austin opened in 2017, the renovation kept the original building's blunt Brutalist character intact: the exposed concrete porte-cochere at street level, the stacked fenestration that gives the facade the feeling of a mid-century civic institution rather than a hospitality product, the structural columns left bare through the interiors. The 428 rooms carry that rawness inside, pairing low-slung platform beds against headboards clad in richly figured olivine burl wood, with patterned wool carpets and cage-frame pendant lights hanging from chains — a palette running to slate grey, warm timber, and dusty blue that holds the building's industrial bones without letting them dominate. Where the property earns its local standing is on the edges. The infinity pool deck, shaded by live oaks that predate the hotel, extends toward Lady Bird Lake in a way that feels more Hill Country ranch than urban retreat. Higher up, the rooftop terrace — draped in cascading pink textile canopies above rattan chairs and rose marble tables — frames the Colorado River at dusk with an eclecticism that suits Austin precisely because it refuses to resolve into a single coherent style.

About

At the crossroads where Town Lake meets downtown, the LINE Austin draws influence from both the surrounding natural beauty and the creative energy that fuels the city. Once home to a jazz club that broadcast live on local radio in the late 1960s, the hotel is part of downtown Austin history and holds a cultural legacy within its walls as unique as the city itself. The LINE is centrally located downtown among Austin's most interesting cultural treasures. Every direction offers something to discover: walk north for a museum day at The Blanton and The Contemporary or ride a bike to the eastside for tacos and drinks on a patio. Stay downtown for a live show at the Paramount Theater, travel across the bridge to the South Congress district or rent a canoe and explore the lake - which also happens to be a river.

"Tough check in. Front desk kept saying “ suite will be ready very soon” and it took three hours. If it will take three hours… just say so. I would appreciate the honesty"

"Great hotel ,with lots of amenities in a great location. After one night in a city facing room we were able to upgrade to a river facing room for a small upcharge. everyone at the front desk were very helpful. Quick response with items run up to the room that we needed. Had a great meal and service at P6 our first night. All the staff in the outlets in the hotel were very friendly. Enjoyed our four nights ,thanks!"

"Warm wonderful inviting staff! Fun activities! I got to paddle on the Colorado within 10 minutes of asking about it! Tacos, cocktails, pool time and fun! I’ll definitely be back!"

"I was disappointed that this hotel did not deliver on what was advertised. While the location was convenient, the room itself was really disappointing - it was visibly dirty and poorly maintained. For example, there appeared to be a large coffee or wine stain next to the bed, along with noticeable dirt and grime on the tables (photos attached). Service was also underwhelming. The front desk staff, in particular, came across as unenthusiastic and not especially welcoming. To be fair, the pricing was reasonable, and my expectations were aligned with that. However, basic cleanliness and a baseline level of service should still be a given. The pool area was another letdown. It’s overcrowded and not particularly relaxing. Its proximity to an overpass made it noisy, with frequent traffic sounds and honking that took away from the experience. Overall, I would not choose to stay here again."

"Great weekend trip! First time in Austin. Hotel was great and my valet, Matt H. was exceptional! Always saw me walking up and had my truck waiting for me. One of my best traveling experiences. All the staff was friendly and very helpful. Will definitely be coming back."
