PB hotel design editorial

At the intersection of West 17th Street and Guadalupe in Austin's Campus District, where the university grid gives way to the city's expanding midrise skyline, a twelve-story curtain-wall tower clad in dark brick and floor-to-ceiling glass announced itself as one of the more considered additions to the neighborhood when The Otis Hotel Austin, an Autograph Collection property, opened in 2021. The building's massing — a glazed primary volume stepping back from a darker masonry base — gives the exterior a deliberate two-part rhythm visible in the images, the upper floors catching sunset light across their full-height windows while the street-level Burger Bar anchors the corner with a more grounded urban presence. Inside, the interiors lean into Austin's music culture without becoming a caricature of it. Guest rooms carry custom-printed carpets in abstracted indigo and sand, headboards paneled in chevron-pattern oak veneer, and framed concert photography clustered gallery-style above the bed — references to the city's live-music identity held lightly rather than announced loudly. The restaurant space below deploys dark-stained wood paneling, brass-trimmed concentric ring pendants suspended over a herringbone oak floor, and curved cognac leather dining chairs in a configuration that borrows more from a 1970s supper club than a hotel dining room. The rooftop pool deck, lined with navy sunloungers and framed by a minimal steel-and-concrete pergola structure, frames the downtown Austin skyline across open water — a straightforward gesture executed with enough restraint to let the view carry the moment.

"I love being a Marriott member and had a last minute trip to Austin arise, so I opened up my app to book a one night room. I saw The Otis was less than a mile from where my dinner event was. Upon arrival the Valet was very helpful and friendly, I had quite a few things with me and asked if they had someone to help me get my items to my room, he said he could get them as far as the front desk and then I was on my own; he did let me know only one side of the luggage cart had rotating wheels. I went to the front desk to check in and was told she saw my upgrade request but would not be able to honor it, I told her I had already received a confirmation email at 2:00 that day confirming my upgrade to a King Studio Corner Suite and it had been assigned to my app as well. I was abruptly told they reserved the right to remove an upgrade; I've never encountered that before and was quite shocked. But I was traveling solo and didn't want to complain so I said OK, she offered me a breakfast voucher, I took it but I don't eat breakfast. I was assigned room 300 on the corner. I then asked for help to get my things to the room, which she said she could do and offered to place a cake and flowers I had into their walk in cooler to store until I was leaving. Room 300 seemed fine upon entering, However you do enter into the bathroom and the shower is very awkwardly right at the front door. You definitely would not want to answer the door if someone else is in the shower. When my items were finally brought to my room the young lady who did so was extremely pleasant and had brought me two water bottles. I went to place them in the mini fridge and found it just sitting on the carpeted floor (not in a cabinet) and it looked to have been dropped down several flights of stairs with many scratches and large dents. I wasn't in the room for long before my dinner event. I did forget my lotion, so went to open the hotel provided bottle that was on the sink, it was obviously used and left over from a previous guest with about 1/4 of the bottle filled. I also went to use the pen and notepad and found it only had two sheets of paper left on the pad, not a big deal for me, just another example of lacking attention to detail. When I returned for the night I settled in, the bed was comfortable, and I watched some TV. The traffic noise from the street was really loud, so I put my sound machine on and went to sleep. At about 3:30/4:00 am I was awaked by terribly loud clanging and banging, I'm not sure if it was construction or exactly what the noise was, I was too tired to get up and look. It sounded like large dumpsters maybe being emptied and dropped, but went on for a while. I woke up to bright light shining directly through the window and discovered the blackout curtain could not go all the way to the wall and the East sun rose straight at the bed. I will not choose to stay at The Otis hotel again and should you choose to: don't expect luxury, definitely lower your expectations for good service or Bonvoy membership gratitude & should you get room 300 grab some earplugs."

"Highly recommended by others, but unfortunately our stay did not live up to the hype. The location is excellent and the property was clean, and we appreciated the helpful package storage service. However, only one elevator worked, the parking gate repeatedly failed to read our room key, and the entrance to our room opened directly into the shower and toilet — awkward if more than one person stays in the room. There was no fridge, ice required calling housekeeping, and the sink had very low water pressure. Overall, the positives didn’t outweigh the inconveniences, and we did not feel the stay was worth the price."

"Lovely classy hotel with great amenities. Roof top swimming pool and bar was a bonus! We held a 2 day event and the staff were attentive and went beyond for us and our attendees! The bar staff were friendly and so knowledgeable. For me KD at reception stood out as although we were early for check in sorted us out and upgraded us. Not to mention he solved a refund issue with vouchers and that was really thoughtful of him and convenient for us. Here is a pick of him so see him for all your stay needs! He is the man!"

"I had a fantastic one-night stay at this hotel and I chose it because I was attending a concert at the Moody Center. Something very unique about this hotel is that all the rooms have a vinyl record player. Music is one of the "themes" of the hotel and there's even music that plays in the elevators. In addition, they have a rooftop pool and bar, a restaurant in the lobby, and some really cool art. Something to keep in mind is this hotel is right next door AC Hotel. Both are Marriott hotels, but it seems that some people went to the wrong entrance for Otis and vice versa. To the managers of Otis, I would like to compliment an employee by the name of "Key" at the front desk for her exceptional service during check-in and check-out! Her customer service skills were so good that I could not tell that she was a new employee at the hotel. Employees like this truly enhance the experience for customers at any hotel. Thank you, Key!"

"Completely inept management charged a prepaid business expense to my card and the charges have been pending for weeks. Not a single competent person works at the front desk to resolve this issue or return my calls. Book elsewhere Completely unreal that this scam is in operation in 2025."
