PB hotel design editorial

Planted at the corner of Lamar and Louisiana in Houston's downtown core, the warm buff-brick tower that has housed Four Seasons Houston since 1982 carries the measured postmodern confidence of its era — thirty floors of articulated concrete and brick rising in a corrugated profile, the facade's vertical fins catching Texas light in a way that gives the mass more movement than its footprint would suggest. Designed by 3D/International, the 404-room building was conceived as part of the mixed-use One Shell Plaza development, and its low-rise podium connects to the city's celebrated network of underground tunnels, embedding the hotel into Houston's peculiar pedestrian geography. A recent renovation brought the interiors into sharper contemporary focus, and the rooms visible in the images reflect that shift cleanly: blue-and-amber abstract rugs ground spaces furnished with cognac leather seating, curved navy sofas, and warm wood millwork, the curved bay windows — a legacy of the original architecture — preserved and celebrated rather than screened away. The restaurant carries a more decisive design statement, with a sculptural branching chandelier in blackened steel and brass suspending globe pendants over a dining room anchored by a bar faced in heavily veined grey-and-white marble. The pool terrace at podium level, shaded by mature live oaks and date palms beneath a timber pergola, delivers the kind of unexpected urban resort atmosphere that downtown Houston, with its subtropical climate and skyline backdrop, makes entirely plausible.

"Everybody in this hotel I’ve experienced is utterly charming. We had a challenge with the hotel organised pick up (who wasn’t there on arrival, then got lost and then picked us up 45 mins late) and felt a little hassled in check in. The reception team listened to my feedback and gave me a very generous solution. We booked with Amex Platinum so you have $30 breakfast credit per guest and $100 dining credit as well as early check in and late check out. If this wasn’t good enough you also get an upgrade, subject of course to availability. The hotel, albeit rather dated from the outside, is lovely inside and commands a very central place in Central Houston. Lots of nice bars and restaurants around and the Toyota Centre is only a 5 minute walk if you want to watch the Houston Rockets basketball, we did . The excursion company we used for our tour (Houston Tours) were literally a block away. Breakfast is served in the hotels signature restaurant, Toro Toro and I rank it one of top 3 breakfasts I’ve had in the 62 countries I’ve visited. Overall, a great place to stay, especially if you are going on a cruise from Galveston (as we are). Whoever is dealing with the staff in this hotel, well done. As a CEO myself it’s lovely to see happy and motivated colleagues."

"I showed up at the Four Seasons at 8 AM with a super sick kid. (Dental abscess that led to bad infection) We had just had a terrible flight and I was worried that we would have to sit in the lobby for hours until normal check-in time and I was also worried I would have to take him to an Emergency Room. They checked us right in and sent us to a suite. They also asked if I needed help finding a doctor for my Son. Turns out all he needed was a nap so the antibiotics he was taking could take effect. What great hospitality. I wish I could remember the names of everyone who was so nice to us. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I strongly recommend this hotel to anyone and I look forward to staying with you again on my next trip to Houston."

"Manager Marcia is the best person we’ve ever met in our hotel experience. We used to prefer the Ritz-Carlton, but now we’ve truly discovered the Four Seasons because of her. She handled every issue with care, treated us with respect, and showed genuine kindness toward our baby. Thanks to Marcia, we felt incredibly comfortable, valued, and happy throughout our stay. She is the most professional and amazing woman we’ve ever met. However, the management and restaurant staff at Toro Toro could really learn some courtesy and professionalism."

"An excellent hotel in all dimensions. Clean, spacious, attentive service, a lively bar and a great restaurant. I’ll happily stay here again."

"Stayed here on business. The hotel is a little dated from the exterior but inside the renovations are well done and the rooms are comfortable and modern. Tom Segesta and his team bring their A-game as far as client service goes. Everyone is super nice and helpful. Small annoyances such as no toiletries in the bathrooms and a tv that didn’t work were attended to. The hotel is very well located and it’s walkable to downtown office buildings and the convention center; even in the heat and humidity of Houston! Service matters and this hotel does a good job in Toro Toro and the main bar in the lobby. This is a good place to stay in Houston."
